Another trivia thread -

Who has the biggest travel schedule in football (outside the AFL and state leagues)?

My vote goes to Cobar who have roadtrips of up to 400 kms one way in the Northern Riverina FL.

Any others?

Katoomba-Lithgow travel distances:

Dubbo - 306k
Parkes - 261k
Cowra - 210k
Mudgee - 163k
Orange - 158k
Bathurst (CSU & Eagles) - 102k

The longest trip in the SANFL has to be for either Central District and South Adelaide, traveling between Elizabeth & Noarlunga takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Easily accessed by public transport though. Pretty simple trip for such a long distance.

Exmouth in WA had pretty big trips ... every one of its opponents was close to or in Carnarvon, 220k away.

They've gone into recess because of this.

Lake Nash to Mount Isa seems to be about 180kms.

Richo would have it, though, with Cobar.

just looking on a map, Cobar, should be in the northern/northern riverina league, christ there must be a closer comp.

Cobar have tried to join the Central West League a couple of times, as has Coonanbarrabran. They were both in the CWAFL at one stage. The CWAFL seems to look the other way whenever this suggestion is raised. If Cobar joined the CWAFL they'd pretty much have the same travelling distances they have at the moment as, with Mudgee and the Mountain Lions, this League is moving east with time. The only other League they may consider would be Broken Hill, which is actually part of South Australia for football purposes.

The reality is Cobar is a bloody long way from anywhere to begin with. I did a bit of work there for the Shearers and Rural Workers Union in the late nineties. Even the Rugby League side plays in the Country Rugby League's Group 11 with their major opponents being in the Dubbo area.

The CWAFL Plays Northern Riverina on May 17, at Condoblin, they always flog us. The CWAFL would probably be one of the weakest leagues, along with Summerland, in Australia.

It's worth considering that these places we're talking about are Rugby League Heartlands. Rugby League is very sensitive to the encroachment of AFL and can be quite hostile. Simply putting a footy side on the deck in these towns is no small achievement. But that's bush footy, especially in NSW, you just live with it. The alternative is too scary to consider (see Exmouth above).

this week the Mountain Lions travel to Dubbo for the lightning premiership of the CWAFL. As at wednesday night I have 16 players available for the trip, including 3 under 17's. We will struggle, but that's bush footy. We had 26 available at "home" last weekend.

The NSWAFL (not the sharpest knives in the drawer) suggested Katoomba-Lithgow join the Illawarra-South Coast League.

Goondiwindi and Coonabarabran were both in the North West AFL at one time as well weren't they?

Does anyone know how far that stretched?

Goondi have some big road trips in the Darling Downs AFL these days too I spose.

Could C'bran join the Tamworth AFL? How far is it from C'bran to Tamworth?

Just a random question, wouldn't it be a huge reduction in travel for the Mountain Lions to play in the SFA?

The Mid America AFL stretches from Dallas to Chicago N-S and Kansas City to Cincinatti E-W. And they do play a home and away season (albeit fairly short).

Quite possibly the furthest travelling amateur sporting association of any sport in the world!

And yet rugby league fans blame the Storm's poor crowds on Melbourne sports fans being too narrow minded with regards to new sports.

Apparently people in NSW are "much" more open minded!

It also included Moree and Inverell

Coonabarrabran and Gunnedah depended on transitory workers on the Newell highway and coal mining jobs, I doubt if there's any AFL presence in Coona these days. Even Rugby League is struggling along the Castlereagh River. It's 180k of medium to good road between Coona and the Country Music Capital of Australia.

Gee Richo, what a great idea! A pity the poior prescious things in the SFA see it as a bit of an inconvinience to drag themselves away from the Coffee Shops and steam baths to come as far as Katoomba for a bit of footy.

Your suggestion is far too logical for the NSWAFL to consider.

Geesus, they'd rather make you guys travel 2 hours plus every second week rather than them come half an hour out of town once a year?

I live in the Adelaide CBD and I can tell you it takes at least another 10 minutes to travel to Noarlunga than it does to nip up Main north Rd to Elizabeth. South Adelaide wins the "longest road trip" competition in the SANFL.

Not true, Kev. They went into recess because the Gascoyne FA refused to play any finals in Exmouth - even if the Eagles finished the season on the top of the ladder.

Pity North Pilbara is too far away for them, so they had nowhere else to go.

Yes, true, Phil :p

You're right, but the reason WHY its a problem not having a final at Exmouth, was the distance ... and they were fed up with still having to travel even if they finished top of the ladder!

(So we're both right) ;)

Mick Redden the North Adelaide champion and games record holder travelled from his home Pekina in the Mid north of SA to Adelaide to play for North Adelaide for many seasons. It was estimated he travelled around 200,000KM in his plaing time. it would have been a 600KM round trip every week.
