Fox Footy Extra up here - which one do we get?

I've seen old VFL games and current VFL games, West Australian matches and a bit of the 1987 SANFL Grand Final - what's the story?

Top of the morning to everybody else.

Not sure about this year, but last year we eventually got the Victorian feed.
The reason for this was that originally we had the Victorian free to air (channel 9) and the SA Fox Footy. That meant that we got no live SA games, and clashes galore between the two channels.

I am assuming we still have the Victorian Fox Footy.

Yeah see Fox Footy Channel I can kind of work out cos that's been on for longer.

Because Fox Footy Extra is still new I'm unsure which it is or if we're actually getting some kind of amalgamated version. Is there a chance we'd have the Victorian FFC (which is now Channel 54) but maybe have a different state's FFX (which is now 53, which was formerly FFC here)?

It's sposed to be the Vic feed. But I haven't had any time to pay attention to the content lately....

FFC is a national feed, so you're getting the same as everyone.

Fox Footy Channel (54) is the same in all states whereas the Fox Footy Extra (52) we get is from Victoria.

If you go to Austar's site (http://www.austar.com.au/default_frm.htm)
- Click on TV Guide
- Then click on Personal Guide
- Choose Fox Footy Channel and Fox Footy Extra Vic & Tas for the date you want to look at you will have the channels we are currently getting.

There may be the odd program change but it's pretty spot on. On the Vic channel and the National Channel they have shown a good mix of all leagues although we don't get all the SA shows it could be a lot worse.

We're actually in the process of sending a lot of complaints to Channel 9 up here over their decision to show Saturday night games after a movie meaning they don't come on til 10:30pm at the earliest..........

For example this week Port's game starts at 7:00pm but Channel 9 start their coverage at 10:30pm whilst the replay on Fox starts at 10:00pm.

If the Showdown is on Free to Air it will be the same.

We've let the Adelaide Supporters Group know about this as well and have been getting our members to

- Send an email (abruyn@nine.com.au) and/or ring Channel 9 (8981 8888) to complain about the poor coverage.
- Contact the NT NEWS Letters To The Editor section (ntnmail@ntn.newsltd.com.au) - include your name address and phone number for verification.
- Contact the sports section of the NT NEWS (ntnsport@ntn.newsltd.com.au)
- Contact the AFL Media Section (media@afl.com.au) and even the Port Adelaide Football Club (email@PortAdelaideFC.com.au) asking for their help in getting this ridiculous situation fixed.

I posted this in the regional league board last week showing the mix we are getting up here and the different shows that are shown in SA that we don't get to see........

Fox Footy Extra, Porthos. Get some new bifocals.

Just on that Saturday night thing dk - I didn't get Monday's paper so I don't have a TV Guide, are you saying because Channel 8 is no longer it changes things for Channel 10's Saturday night games? Last Saturday night I didn't take much notice of the telly either.

I just realised something, Smallville's new time at 7.30pm on Saturdays. THOSE BASTARDS.

I like that show but that is a joke.

By the way, Austar.com says:

FFX:

8.00am 2003: Kangaroos v St Kilda (Australian Rules - G)
10.30 2003: Brisbane Lions v Essendon (Australian Rules - G)
1.00pm 2003: Sydney v Carlton (Australian Rules - G)
3.30 2003: Adelaide v Fremantle (Australian Rules - G)
6.00 2003: Melbourne v Hawthorn (Australian Rules - G)

8.00 2003: Kangaroos v St Kilda (Australian Rules - G)

10.00 SANFL: Match Of The Round (Australian Rules - G)

3.00 2003: Kangaroos v St Kilda (Australian Rules - G)
5.30 2003: Melbourne v Hawthorn (Australian Rules - G)

Interesting.

And what is this 'your team, at the same time every week' stuff? Does this mean mid arvo's on Wednesdays I can watch Crows games?

And I wonder what the Crows Show is.......

Thanks for your help anyway fellas.

Channel 9 will not be showing any games live on Saturday night as they do not rate according to them and they will be showing Smallville and a movie repeat before the footy comes on.

One of our supporters got the following reply from Andy Bruen who is the GM.....

Thanks for the note Mark ... the simple fact is that last year's experience proved to me that the audience does not watch the Saturday night games in the same numbers as the Friday night or the afternoon fixtures. Every survey we did last year showed that the audience turned off in droves from the Saturday night games - without question and regardless of the draw - and watched a movie in preference. We are still running the games, though delayed, for those who - unlike you - don't have subscription services. We have a strong commitment to the football and I still think the services people are getting now will compare as better than they had, but the decision is one based on what our constant surveying shows that the majority wants to watch.

Imparja may still be running them and that's entirely their decision. They do not - like us - have to rely entirely on their performance in the market to survive as they have substantial backing from the Australian taxpayer through subsidies from ATSIC - we, on the other hand, do not.

Other than that, thanks for the note and should you want more detail, I am happy to provide it.

I'd say not one of his surveys looked at the number of licenced venues that would have shown the game to many people interested in watching the footy............

Not sure about the 'Your Team' thing you mention but Fox will show each game 3 times during the week as well as the match of the round from the SANFL, VFL and WAFL........

As to whether the replays are on at the same time each week I have no idea......I only got cable TV a few weeks ago and am still working through things - Fox also have had a habit of making changes at the last minute. At least it is a better coverage for us than last year although we still do not get all the shows shown on the SA feed.

The Crows Show (like the Power Show) is their team show that each club puts on each week and goes for 30 mins - these are not being shown up here in the NT but you will see highlights of this in Club Corner which is shown each.

Hope that helps

That letter is such bullshit it's funny!

That Imparja whinge is weird too.

Andy Bruyn's always copped it, doesn't he learn?

I am trying to remember some of the Saturday night matches from last year, all I can remember at the moment are Brisbane v Adelaide QF which I watched, the Adelaide v Melbourne SF which I watched bits and pieces of, and the Brisbane v Port Adelaide PF which I took no notice of. More will come to me but for heaven sakes what will it be like around finals time?

They are shooting themselves in the foot with a more powerful gun if they think a one hour drama (again, Smallville rules but this a crap time for it) and some repeated movie (what is it this week anyway?) will rate better than 10's football.

Maybe because it's something that 9 and 10 are still agreeing to be shown up here, they gave most of 10's stuff the arse remember.

Of course if you're on the Victorian FFX feed, there is no regular replay time for the Crows (or Port), just the 10 Victorian teams. You're best off getting the more detailed replays taped on FFC (the primetime replays `your team every week' are currently just siren to siren)

And I wonder what the Crows Show is.......Just an extended Club Show.

By Victorian I meant 'normal' or 'main' - say for instance on Bigfooty the 'main' board is the AFL board.

Anyway, how can I tell the difference between the more detailed replays and the the 'your team @ this time each week replays'? You mean to say that the more detailed ones are just on FFC? I understand the others wouldn't be on FFC because one of FFX's main offers is watching your club at the same time every week.

I have the VCR set to tape the 3am Crows v Dockers replay as it is.

It's a typical response from Andy........we went through the same crap last year with him.............his statement that we are getting a better coverage this year is just garbage as if it wasn't for Fox Footy we wouldn't.

The emails are only the beginning as we'll be getting the NT News to run a story or two on it as well as getting quite a few people to write letters to the editor........it may take some time to get a change but we're confident we will if we keep complaining about the coverage through all available channels.

Last year Port played 7 games and Adelaide played 4 games on Saturday nights during the regular season of which half were on Channel 9(8)..........but as this new arrangement for Saturday night broadcasts will affect all club supporters it means we are getting ripped off by missing out on 22 live games in the Top End.

This week the movie repeat is The Glimmer Man (120 mins , Rated: M)

Some of it's great reviews........

"Yet another action-thriller that just isn't very thrilling." -- Jeff Vice, DESERET NEWS, SALT LAKE CITY

"A lean and mean exploitation thriller, The Glimmer Man might not be original or memorable, but the goods are delivered with reasonable flair and efficiency." -- Dale Winogura, BOXOFFICE MAGAZINE

"It's ugly and unpleasant but you may find it intensely compelling, much like a visit to the oral surgeon." -- Mary Brennan, FILM.COM

"The plot of The Glimmer Man involves not only the Family Man but Our Evil Secret Government, the Russian Mafia and Rich Powerful Politicians -- the three stooges of action cinema in the '90s." -- Richard Harrington, WASHINGTON POST

"It's repetitive mayhem as usual." -- Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY

I'll be questioning whether their surveys take into account the number of people at pubs and clubs around town that will be watching footy and would have no interest in second rate repeat movies like the above..........

It's got nothing to do with the 9 & 10 agreement for other shows as Channel 9 have the rights to show all the free to air games live in the NT............it's just Andy being the idiot he is.

Luckily Fox have the rights for the first showdown on Sat 26 April and the game will be shown live from 7:00pm. Should be a good night as our supporters group will be joining yours out at Tracy Village for the game.

I have a feeling that the real reason they are not showing them is because they are channel 10 games.
Andy Bruyn can dress it up however he wants it, but at the end of the day the so called accord for country areas with only one of 10 or 9 means jack **** as he must obey his masters at channel 9.

Except if that was the case we wouldn't get Sunday games either as they are all Channel 10 games..........

I'm pretty confident it's more to do with Andy being a wanker as usual..........

I'm sending my email on Friday morning and will be expecting an abusive phone call at work within 15mins going by the response I got from him last year. I also know after the letter to the editor I sent in last year I got more than 50 phone calls from people who supported our stance and wanted to know what they could do to help. After the emails we'll be starting on the NT News next week to start running stories about the coverage.........I'm confident we can bring about change just like we did at the beginning of last season with Austar/Fox.

I won't quote all of this post as it's big.

I was quite ****ed off a lot during last year because Channel 9 never showed Crows games until near the end of the season, whether that was because they were in-form then I don't know but the Geelong, Bulldogs, Dons, Swans, Richmond matches were shown then of course the last showdown of last year which I think was straight after that spate of televised games WASN'T shown.

Working beautifully with your synopsis and reviews of another Seagal pearler by the way.

Paf is right too - Sunday games were and always 9 - Brereton every bloody week is something you don't forget. I think he called the bloke who scored the 3 Pointer in the Wizard Cup GF Ben Smart by the way, I digress. Like him I kind of get the feeling we're seeing his true Nine colours of Andy.

The first showdown is an Adelaide home game, get your arses to the Casuarina Club!

I just checked and I did have that wrong.

Mind you Channel 9 up here do not show the 2nd live game each Sunday as is shown on Channel 9 in Adelaide, Brisbane Melbourne, Perth & Sydney. They are quite happy to show the Saturday afternoon game that is from Channel 10 but not the Saturday night game due to ratings which seems ridiculous when you look at the reviews for the movie they show instead.

I might enjoy sending them to Andy just to see the abuse I get back in his response..........;)

They are quite happy to show the Saturday afternoon game that is from Channel 10 but not the Saturday night game due to ratings which seems ridiculous when you look at the reviews for the movie they show instead.

I might enjoy sending them to Andy just to see the abuse I get back in his response..........;)
I am sure that if we had 10 instead of 9 they would be showing Saturday night's games live, and not Friday night's.
BUT they would give the same excuse as a back-up argument.

The reality is that they will do what they are told by the "mother" channel, and only show the bare minimum that they must as per contract. Let's not forget they MUST also show rugby league as per contract, and cater for the non-sporting community as well. Talk about overload. Bloody AFL and it's contracts.

Imparja being independent has a bit more leeway in choosing what they show and when.

To an extent I agree although 10 does have a huge focus on Sport - just wish we had got them instead of 7 as was first mooted when the extra station started as then Channel 9 would have been screwed.......and deservedly so.............

We were told in Channel 9 advertising earlier this year that we would have an even better AFL coverage this year which we are yet to see and probably never will.

Last year we had the....
- Friday night games which are on delay anyway
- Saturday games live
- Saturday night game live
- Sunday game live

This year we have
- Friday night games which are on delay anyway
- Saturday games live
- Saturday night game delayed til after Fox replay starts
- Sunday game live

The comments he made that really get me are these......

the simple fact is that last year's experience proved to me that the audience does not watch the Saturday night games in the same numbers as the Friday night or the afternoon fixtures. Every survey we did last year showed that the audience turned off in droves from the Saturday night games - without question and regardless of the draw - and watched a movie in preference.

I'd like to see the evidence of these "droves" that watched movies given the crap that is normally played on a Saturday night up here and as already mentioned this fails to look at the number of people that would be watching the footy at one of the many pubs and clubs throughout Darwin.

We have a strong commitment to the football and I still think the services people are getting now will compare as better than they had

Well in my 8 & 1/2 years in the NT I don't think I've seen a worse Free To Air coverage than the one we have this year so I'd love to know what year he's comparing this years coverage to - maybe 1975 after cyclone Tracy........

The main thing is that we get people to continue to write emails and letters to Channel 9, NT News, The AFL and our clubs as pressure will eventually force a change if enough people get on the case (as was proven last year with Austar & Fox) instead of the usual apathetic Aussie attitude.

And what gives with the Sunday Footy Show, for the first time ever I thought we were getting the AFL one at Sunday at 11.00am - it was the rugby one as usual though.

Dk, do you remember a few months ago the few letters that got sent in protesting no Neighbours? They stopped because people then wrote in and told them they were sad and should stop complaining heheh

If both pages of the letters pages were filled with disgruntled people wanting Nine Darwin to do more with its Ten stuff, that'd do it, and no stopping it when some wag bothers to write in and whinge that reading someone else's two bob's worth has scarred them for life or something.

Porthos - on the web guide for Austar it's difficult trying to see when the replays finish, so I'm unsure if it's a proper one or just siren to siren.

Not sure about the Sunday Footy Show but I did notice they advertised it as being the AFL one even though we have never received it before.........I was still catching up on sleep after a big night.

I remember seeing the Neighbours stuff in the paper but this is a little bit different as Channel 9 up here do actually have the rights to show the game. It may take a little bit of time but once a few letters hit the letters to the editor and hopefully the NT News follow up with a story or 2 I'm sure Channel 9 can be convinced to change in time. I might even make my letters a bit more interesting by adding that Channel 9 are not showing the 2nd Sunday game as is shown in other states on 9.

As for the finishing times shown on Austar it should be the time the next program starts as the stations run 24 hours a day - the Foxtel guide shows the same as the Austar guide.

Just what time was the match eventually shown at?

Nightline came on saying some breaking news, weird it was able to wait until The Glimmer Man finished.

Not sure when it started on Channel 9 but we watched the game on Fox from 10:00pm and then after plenty of drinks after the match got home at 1:45 only to see the last quarter again.........

Yeah but I doubt it's set in stone, all day today there was a lot of stuff scheduled that didn't come on.

Why they didn't include Fox Footy Extra in this month's book is beyond me.

It is set in stone as Fox, Nine and Ten have the actual game coverage worked out 4 weeks in advance...........ther's only 2 games on next Saturday night and it will be Kangaroos and Brisbane on after the movie on Nine.........

Probably becase it was printed a few weeks ago and the details of what the extra channel was showing wouldn't have been available............at least we know it will be better than's Channel 9's pathetic effort..........

The Fox Footy part of the guide.

'Please see EPG' or 'See EPG for late night or early morning programming' etc.

Do you mean the actual Magazine Guide that gets delivered as I can't see EPG on the online guides........

If so I presume it's what they use to say check the online Program Guide - just not sure what the 'E' stands for.........

OK....that would mean the online guide as I mentioned in the last post as the mag is printed a few weeks before the new month and not all the games/programs being shown are decided upon.

You'll be pleased to know the Showdown will be shown live at 7:00pm on Sat 26th April so hopefully it will be a big night like the last showdown was last year......

Spongebob isn't too bad for a newcomer.......:D

I know, the classic Ren and Stimpy will never be beaten.

7.00pm, wahoooooooooooooooo.

Is that EST or not?

By the way, today's paper had a letter talking about Friday night football not being live, did you see it?

7:00pm our time it's listed as 7:30pm on the online guide which is EST - the match actually starts at 7:10pm in Adelaide.

Didn't notice the letter today but just read it then - Friday night games have never been live as Channel 9 show the game at 8:30pm in each capital city even though games start at 7:40pm EST.

Prior to daylight savings down south we were getting the game 1 hour later than down south so it's a little better now but still nearly an hour later than the game is played.

I've got no idea how Channel 9 can claim in their advsertising up here that we are getting an even better coverage in 2003. We no longer have Saturday night games live like last year and we also miss out on 1 game that is shown down south on Sundays where they show 2 matches every Sunday.

I doubt we'll ever get the other Sunday game due to rugby commitments but if enough people complain in the media, to the clubs and the AFL we should eventually be able to get a change to the Saturday night telecast. Last week we watched the Port game on Fox out at Tracy Village then spent another hour drinking and by the time I into the city Channel 9 were just starting the second half of the match.

It sucks.....
