View Full Version : The Office

Anyone watch it? Perhaps the best British comedy since Fawlty Towers - brilliant, especially if you work in an office.
The boss is an absolute crack-up. I don't bother recommending shows very often, but as Molly would say "do yourself a favour" and watch it - 10PM Tuesdays on 2.

Funniest show on TV, without a shadow of a doubt.

We actually watched a bit of this show during a Human Resource Management lecture at Uni yesterday.

I'm guessing the lecturer just said "How not to...." and then showed various clips of the boss making an absolute twit of himself!

Spot on! We did recruitment and selection: so he showed us a clip of the manager interviewing a man, and then a women. EEO stuff etc.

Then he would have loved last night with the racist joke - geez it was funny watching him trying to find out who dobbed him in!

Yeh I really like the show, but its abit like the show "some mothers do have em" with Frank Spencer. Whilst it is funny, you feel uneasy watching it.

I agree
I can generally only watch half an episdoe before it becomes just too cringeworthy
some very funny moments though.
The Quiz Night episode was a blinder.

I spoke to somebody who used to work for the BBC a couple of weeks ago and he told me that's how the concept was originally created - as a 'how not to' video for people working in the office environment.
Obviously, some people saw it as being something more and turned it into a series.

It is an absolute classic. Fantastic show.
The best guy is that 'Assistant Regional Manager', sorry, that's 'Assistant to the Regional Manager'. hahaha love it.
LOVE IT!
Watched it on UK-TV and I must say, it took me 2-3 episodes to make sure I didn't miss one!
David Brent and Gareth make my skin crawl, while making me giggle at the same time.
It's scary when it sometimes actually reminds you of your own work place in parts. :D
The guy who writes it (Ricky) who plays David Brent isn't going to make a 3rd series, but there is talk of making a movie length episode.
I'm happy to watch an episode 2 or 3 times - you miss so much the first time around.

Thats' exactly what everyone says in Britain, it became a must watch show but everyone was finding it difficult to watch it at times due to the feelings of embarrassment that Brent causes.l

The first 12 episodes had a good run on Sunday and Monday nights on UKTV over summer - had to tape them all ... does anyone know if there's a third series on the drawing board ?

Absolutely brilliant although I know people on whom it is completely lost. Me thinks 'canned laughter' is amore powerful prompt than alot of people suspect...

Very true. Especially for Americans.
Apparently an American network bought the rights and is going to remake it with American actors.
What odds that there is a laugh track as well?

There is an american film called 'office space' which is the same except in a US software company. I have workes in UK and Oz and I think the US one rings truer here in Oz.
PS from what I have seen "office space" is funnier

Remember their pathetic versions of Men Behaving Badly and Absolutely Fabulous? They are so arrogant, they always think they can do things better.
Don't forget U571, a movie in which a group of American soldiers CRACKED the Germans enigma code.
Problem was that in reality, it was cracked by a whole bunch of British soldiers, a year before the Americans even entered the war!
Remember way back when you had to ask the Americans to go to war!

Seen it. It is funny and so Silicon valley early-mid 90s. Went with other suits from our bank to check on investment. 28 yo CEO greeted us with baseball cap (on backwards) , said "man" a lot, and was proud of his burn rate.
For Lease sign there now.

No it's not, the guy who plays Brent & writes it has said that this was the last one whether that's true or not I don't know but a 3rd series is definitely not about to go to air.

Best show on t.v at the moment.
I don't know whether to laugh or cringe half the time, so i sorta do both.
If it wasn't for Tim i'd go insane watching it.

funny show, possibly the best comedy on tv at the moment.
the training session episode (you know, the one with the singing) is a personal favourite.
How awful are Gareth's offers to that new blonde girl?! Said he'd only go down "there" if she wore a condom with the other guy. Also offered to come from behind. Terrible!

I like how she reacted. "That's real sweet gareth. Why don't you put it in an email for me."

Some definate highlights had me almost on the floor laughing.
"What about a quickie from behind? A bit of in-and-out. No strings attatched."
Also when David Brent was going on about what he'd do to The Corrs and the place went quiet cracked me up no end.
Someone told me yesterday that they are currently making the third series, so I am definately confused as to what is going on with the show.

I've heard great things about this show, just wish it wasn't on so late!
Late?! That's early for me! :)
I think the girls are very tolerant of Gareth. Some wouldn't take his offers so well!
Hehe that bit with the Corrs was **** funny.

David Brent will be back
May 28 2003
Ricky Gervais as David Brent in The Office.

Website: The Office
Writer Ricky Gervais has confirmed The Office will return for two final episodes this Christmas.
Viewers will see David Brent dressed up as Santa Claus as the hit show bows out for good.
"We're halfway through writing and we can't tell you the plot because that would spoil it, but you'll see all the old favourites - and a couple more," Gervais told this week's Heat magazine.
His writing partner, Stephen Merchant, added: "It'll be the same jokes, but with tinsel and David Brent in a Santa outfit."
Fans of the sitcom had hoped Gervais would bring back The Office for a third series.
But he insisted he would never revive the show after these last two episodes.
Gervais said: "If every project from this Christmas to when I'm fat and 50, as opposed to fat and 40, is the most abysmal thing ever, I still won't do that. This is the end of the story."
The 40-minute episodes, which begin filming in August, will be screened on their "spiritual home" of BBC2 rather than transferring to BBC1, he added.
The comedy pair plan to continue working together and are considering ideas for another sitcom and a feature film

Its a relief they're not coming back. I have to look at this show through the cracks between my fingers (or is that the fingers between my crack, Gareth?).
What I really meant was that one of the strengths of Fawlty Towers, or even our own Mother and Son is the small number of episodes made. The inevitable slide in quality would have meant we wouldn't treasure them as much.
Great series. Can't wait for the Christmas episodes.

Gervais and Merchant also do a radio show on Saturday arvos in England. They are an absolute crack up.
I really think a third series would top it all off. Watch all of the episodes one after another and you realise how fast the pace is. Yet the exquisitely painful, drawn out stupidity of Brent makes it seem like the story unfolds over a much longer period of time. That and a week between each episode.

Office Space is funnier... pffft!
just saw the show for the first time on the weekend, it's bloody great!
if the US is making a version of their own, there's no way they will find a guy as good as Ricky Gervais, this guy is hilarious!

This generalisation pleads for rebuttal.
My wife adores the show, and she's a yank. So I think 'Especially for Americans' should be duly qualified, don't you?
Re The Office : We're both huge fans, we also agree with most of you lot re how its a bit cringeful, its difficult to watch a bloke make that much of a pillock of himself.
It reminded me of Frontline, a little.
Loved that bloke when he dressed up as Ali G, and his talk about the 'fanny pack' was a crack-up.
David Brent's motivational speech was fantastic. And how about when he introduced his lodger (his niece I think)?
Love the show.
Also, re Office Space, I think its very funny. Not in the league of The Office, but still very funny.
Oh, and, before I go, I will repeat what I've said on the previous 3 or so threads about the Office ... at Chadstone Shopping Centre a bloke who works in the Pancake Parlour is the spitting image of David Brent.

Actually office space starts well but degenerates when they try to spoil it with a plot.
Maybe the office makes me cringe too much as I am from britain and the bullying was very obvious there. The advantage was they were much easier to spot but in Oz they have to be much more sneaky.
