Let the Moral outrage (http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,28383,26225858-10229,00.html) begin!!
Australian Family Association spokesman John Morrissey described the show as "filth".
"It's the lowest point in Australian television history," he said.
Doesn't it have to be shown on TV before it can become "the lowest point in Australian television history"?

I'm a fan of Safran. At least he tries something original and interesting, unlike 99% of australian television these days.
Will be acquiring the dvd when it's released.
He is getting a lot of publicity with his panty sniffing stunt.
John Safran isn't for everybody, but calling him nothing more than a publicity whore who wants to outrage is barely scratching the surface. He does stir the pot, but he also challenges while doing so.
I'm very excited for the show, in fact a relative of mine has a small spot in it.

Just cant win with the Australian viewing public. One minute everybody is disowning the standard of Australian FTA TV claiming theres nothing but recycled sitcoms and sh*thouse storylines, then the second something a bit different and new comes out, Safran is an "attention whore".

personally i think safran is a revolutionary
how he can turn the idea of cross cultural relationships into something entertaining is a triumph for the LEFT
the way he does it is to not take sides with anything, and thats the way things should be done.
if only there were more people like him
wow that was possibly the most disturbingly hilarious thing i've ever seen

I caught the second half and thought he made some good observations about intercultural relationships in particular but I'm kind of with HarryTiger on this one, didn't think it was all that insightful or edgy and simply covered existing issues in his own, irreverent, style. - The Wieners Circle  Is there really a place like that? Far out, I'm surprised we haven't heard of any deaths arising from there.
- His speech at the end was gold.
Not as funny as last week... Took a while to get used to him being black... A few laughs in there, hopefully next week is funnier...
highlights: letting loose at the hot dog restaurant, rapping his raspberry cordial song, crapping his pants when the other guy said he looked like he could be white, speech at the end...

i didnt think it was as humourous as the first episode. i think he wanted to convey the message more in the 2nd episode compared to the first one where it was bordering on toilet humour in parts...
safran did say that it is more like a docu-comedy rather than a comedy-documentary for this series. the speeddating part at the end is the prime example that it was a documentary.
he looked convincing enough as a black man, they used the makeup department from the movie "the curious case of benjamin button" to make him look like that
King Elvis
29 Oct 2009, 13:01
Good call Xf - it does seem like he's trying to tackle meaningful issues, but do it in a funny way, instead of just trying to cause shit under the guise of learning.
Reminds me a lot at this stage of Louis Theraux (sp?); but with more funny shit.
Hahn; stunts are stunts, that doesn't mean they can't be an effective method of highlighting or exploring an issue.

But Mr King. Stunts are stunts. Invariably cheap. And a shoddy device to hide an actual ineptitude in highlighting certain issues.

i'm a fan of safran, but this show really, really sucks.
seems to me that it has an identity crisis. is it comedy? or is it deconstruction of global race issues?
at the moment it seems as though it's attempting to do both, but is succeeding in doing neither.

You seem to be a good and earnest man Mr King.
Long has it been when I have admired your forthright contributions on TLS.
But you miss the point. Like wide wide tittays.
Stunts, by their very definition are..stunts.A sideshow, A cavalcade. A mardi gras(like TLS- no homo no show)
Why use devices? Yes- they might add humour. Might even add pathos. But rarely help in making a point. Or a serious comment. Or a serious commentary. Its weak. And you know it.
Cheap devices are weak. Their purpose.
Clownpaint rarely divulges any issue.

i think the key is everyone knows safran is always pulling a stunt
maybe people watching it are just getting used to him
I think he shouldn't be focusing on one thing each episode, both the episodes this year could have been cut in half and then joined together to make one episode making it more magazine style a la Music Jamboree.
With the half an hour long episodes basically centred around the one gag his point feels a bit laboured.

Yeah I don't reckon that picture is doing her much justice, she looked a ****ing lot better than that to me last night.
What's her name?
Thing about this week's episode was that it's been done before on Seinfeld! (the one where Jewish men start throwing themselves at Elaine because of her mysterious 'shiksa' appeal)
I actually thought the 'blackface' episode was surprisingly insightful. A bit Louis Theroux-ish. Got the sense his desire to replicate the 'experiment' was from a genuine curiosity to experience what it was like and that came through in his interviews.
good episode tonight, probably the best of the season... good laughs at the start, making out with his ex's mothers... the voodoo ritual was interesting... and then the interview with his ex and Barry Hogan from All Tomorrow's Parties, hit him like a sledge hammer...

Last night's episode (which I watched early this morning on the abc site - very handy) was the most excrutiatingly cringe-worthy half hour of television I've ever seen. That's not a criticism.
I loved at the end where he pointed out that he needs to watch more Michael Moore, to see how to do the confrontational thing and humiliate the subject, rather than himself. The bit with the ex and the All Tomorrow's Parties guy had me constantly pausing and looking away from the screen, wishing John would just get the hell out of there.

what was the point of the crucifixion? i mean it looked painful and graphic but what was the bloody point?
even john himself questioned said afterwards that he didnt feel like he de-ethnise himself. which was the point of doing it in the first place
it was nothing more than a cheap stunt, but what else did anyone expect from one john safran?
that being said: his friends and family would probably crucify him for the first stunt of pretending to get married with one of 600 bin ladens

I love the lengths he went to piss off his Jewish friend. Being crucified was just a stunt yet I still watched it, can't believe he actually did it.
I thought it was great when he realised that he'd done something which was probably going to really offend his family and friends.

compared to music jamboree and vs god this was absolute dogshit. i don't really recall laughing once. it was just personal vendettas dressed up as mainstream TV. if anything it was a self-satire.
only good moment of the whole series was him getting owned by david irving.

10 Dec 2009, 19:56
it lost focus in the middle
it had vast potential when it started, and the second episode was a testament to that when he became a black man
but yep youre right, it was an avenue for him to channel personal vendettas
Durham Hawks
10 Dec 2009, 21:56
in all honesty the black man episode was where i jumped off, i only really watched the other eight because of safran's track record and also the ABC website providing episodes online is gold and needs to be patronated.
he has peddled the rapper/rasberry cordial/being dumed angle in every series and it always sucks because a) his rapping is shit and b) the chick was clearly onto something.

Love John and think we need more people like him in the media but...
thought this series was disappointing. Agree with other posters in that the series lacked focus and was essentially just a series of stunts. At times it was pretty self indugent.
Still he had a dip and I look forward to what he comes up with next. It was still better than 90% of the rubbish served up on TV these days.

XFactor1979
11 Dec 2009, 14:22
the problem with this series was it got to the point where it was "flogging a dead horse".
those resonating themes were:
1. what did his dead mother really think of him marrying a non jewish girl. my answer: "we wont know, but i think john's mum would be happy if john could find happiness, irregardless if john ends up marrying a jewish girl or a non jewish girl!"
2. getting over deborah kee higgins, to the point he dressed up like her. i was over it on the fourth episode, yet that meandered on to episode 7!
3. the idea that he is a self-hating jew, this theme was repeated to the end where he crucified himself on the cross
if it was a longer series (12 or even 10 episodes) i wouldve forgiven john for repeating the same themes over and over again, but it wasnt a long series, and i thought time was a wasting, this was an interesting subject matter and john only covered the tip of the iceberg. what happened in the show betrayed the intro and title segment.

two of Saffran's "flames" just happened to turn up on some C9 program the other night as I channel flicked.
Katherine Hicks, the woman who made out with JS in the attic of Anne Frank's. And I think the woman purportedly, who was the subject of a legal writ on Race Around the World where JS put a voodoo spell on her on some Pacific island country.
Enter conspiracy: some of these ex-luvs were from central casting, and not genuine flames, or "met at St Kilda FF after party and got her number".
I appreciate much of the program was re-enactments with jobbing actors/actresses. It was just a little coincidental. And those guys from Chaser do set-up their "stunts" which are not. Good for those nuts, it is not implausible JS was not entirely genuine.
