View Full Version : Damien Martyn out of West Indies tour

Damien Martyn hasn't recovered from his broken finger and has been told not to bat for at least 4 weeks.

Therefore, with Martyn out of the test series against the West Indies, what do we do with our batting order and who replaces him in the team?? It could be a perfect opportunity to send Michael Clarke over to the Carribean for some experience.

Thoughts??

Well, at least that solves the Boof vs Love problem. And yes, no question about it, bring in Clarke.

Who bats at four though?
I'd say Love will probably get the gig and boof at six.

They have to give Boof his chance at four IMO

That's where he bats

He is the senior player and has never been able to bat in his position in test matches.

Clarke or Blewett to be added to the squad.

You have to go with Clarke, the kid is gunna be a huge gun and what a better way to give him some international experience than send him on a Windies tour which he deserves to go, not just because he's a youngster.

South Australian's still pinning their hopes on Blewett playing international cricket again.

I'm not neccesarily saying its right or wrong because he's a fantastic cricketer and still is, BUT he's career in terms of international's is over. Finished. Finito. Gone. There were heaps of people at my club who said he should have gone to the WC, and I agree he would've done allright, but he's finished.

He's never really fallen out of form at State level, but he never even seems to be in with a chance of getting an international spot, so the selectors are not going to change their views now.

Clarke will go to the West Indies.

After averaging 42.20 after 25 tests (the end of the New Zealand series 97/98) his average fell away to 34.02 after his 46 tests. Meaning he averaged just 24.68 from his last 21 tests - obviousbly falling out of favour and getting dropped. More to that, he didn't score a ton and only 5 half centuries in those tests.

Since his last test in 1999/2000, his domestic averages have been:

2000-01: 17outs 1162 at 68.35 3 100s 6 50's
2001-02: 16outs 858 at 53.62 4 100's 2 50's
2002-03: 17outs 843 at 49.58 2 100's 5 50's

Total: 50outs 2863 at 57.62, 9 100's 13 50's, HS: 260*

Now if he wasn't even considered after his 2000-01 or 01-02, then why would they suddenly change their mind. Its not going to happen. I'm not saying he shouldn't be in consideration. I'd pick Clarke before Blewett at the moment, but i definetaly think Blewett should have some sort of case, but Blewett has done his dash.

anyway, i think either katich or clarke will go. i hope its clarke, either way i think whoever gets chosen will be a spectator gaining tour experience unless big merv ruffles a few

If the number 4 position is considered a bit of a problem as to who fills why not Steve Waugh? He bats at 4 for NSW (3 in one day matches).

Lehmann at 5 where I think he'd be best suited and Love or Clarke at 6 to ease them into the side.

I like the idea of two aggressive left-handers coming in at number 6 and 7 in the batting order, therefore I'd play Love at 4 and Lehmann at 6.

Love at 4, Waugh at 5, Lehmann at 6.

I personally would like to see Lehmann at 5 as this will be his last chance to cement a test spot. Batting at 6 doesnt seem to sit too comfortably with him after batting at 4 for virtually all of his career. Waugh would be better off batting at 6 as he is very good with the tail. I think Love would be better off at 4. Good technique, has batted 3 or opened for virtually all of his career. Lehmann to me seems too careless to bat at 4 in a test team. His dismissals in the recent ashes series were very, very soft.

Martyn had the problem of not being able to get treatment on the injury during a test and he would receive some rough treatment with a lot of short stuff. If he played and made the injury worse I'd have no sympathy for the guy.

Good chance for Clarke. I hope he gets a go to show his skills..

Sobering thought for Marto fans. But, he'll be back.

Well according to the two Melbourne papers Boof is batting at six, with Love at four. I presume that this is because the selectors are planning a straight swap of Marto for Love when the finger heals.

But I agree that Boof should be at four, Love at five, and Waugh at six

Surprised no has suggested Ian Harvey not only replace martyn, but bypass Love and Lehmann and slot into #4.
