There was once a time before Bigfooty in eth-dogs life, which won't be touched on in this particular post.

At the start of the year there was a lot of speculation at the Essendon football club, being underrated by a lot of people all over Australia, when they were quietly gaining confidence behind the scenes, which will soon be justified in September.

Round 1 came, and Essendon were heading over to South Australia to Port Adelaide, a game that neither team were sure to be confident or nervous, finishing 4th and 5th last respectively last season. It ended in a poor game for the Bombers, but a positive was their first round draft choice Michael Hurley who held Warren Tredrea to 0 goals. Hurley showed why Essendon picked him at 5 that game.

Next Game was back home against Fremantle Dockers, there was a buzz about the game, and Essendon played brilliant football. Jason Winderlich played a brilliant game in a BOG performance, topped off with a great goal on the run on a tight angle.

Round 3 came up with huge expectations when they came up against Arch-Rivals Carlton, with the Blues being 2-0 and Essendon 1-1, Carlton expecting to win. It was a tight affair, both captains dominating, Carlton skipper Chris Judd with over 30 disposals, Lloyd with 5 goals. The game was won by the bombers by a tight 4 points, a great win for Essendon's players morals.

High after the round 3 win, Essendon were playing North Melbourne in a low-scoring affair. Essendon were underwhelming and got defeated for the second time this year. Brett "Boomer" Harvey dominated for the roos, gaining 3 brownlow medal votes.

Round 5 was ANZAC Day match against Collingwood, the second biggest game of the year. It looked bad for the bombers early with key ruckman David Hille going down with injury, but Essendon rallied and Paddy Ryder hit back, dominating Josh Fraser for the rest of the game. It was won with literally the last kick of the Game by boyhood Essendon supporter David Zaharakis, you can watch the goal on this youtube clip:

Round six and Essendon went north to Queensland to play the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. Essendon got thrashed and veterans Dustin Fletchers 300th game by breaking his leg. youngster Tayte Pears played a great game, keeping Lion Full-Forward quiet for 3 and 1/2 quarters, but dropping off late letting Bradshaw getting 4 goals.

Round 7 was supposed to be a thrashing at the hands of the reigning premiers Hawthorn, and that wasn't what happened. Essendon without #1 defender Dustin Fletcher played brilliantly, the Bombers dominating all over the ground. Everyone played a good game, and that resulted in a 44 point win.

Round 8 was when Essendon came up against the undefeated St. Kilda, with the saints grinding down each team that came its way. Many people were expecting St. Kilda to finally be challenged, others expecting a cricket score, but the Gallant dons went down fighting, losing only by 19 points, St. Kilda proving to be a little bit better than the dons. Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears did well again against St. Kilda Key Forwards Nick Riewoldt and Justin Kozschitzke, playing excellent football for young Key defenders.

Round Nine came with the dreamtime at the 'G game in Indigenous round vs Richmond. Essendon got off to a slow start, but found their feet in the second half to win by a comfortable 40 points.

Round 10 put Essendon up against arguably the best side in the league at the time, Geelong Cats. Essendon came in to the game hoping that they would get close to the cats, who were in-form coming into the game. But that hope was demolished, the Cats dominating for the first three quarters, being 64-point winners, with Steve Johnson dominating for the cats, kicking 6 goals.

Round 11 was an interesting build-up, with Essendon having a good record against Adelaide at home, and it was the return of former Geelong player Brent Prismall. Essendon had also never lost 2 games in a row this year, and there was some optimism about them. It was a close game, a high-scoring one where Adelaide eventually won by 16 points, with Midfielders Bernie Vince and Tyson Edwards starring, and youngster Kurt Tippett dominating up forward with 7 goals.

Round 12 was the split round, Essendon having the first week off. They played cellar-dwellars Melbourne, in a game they were expected to win. Brent Prismall's second game back was great, as was the return of Club favourite Dustin Fletcher and tagger Andrew Welsh, both playing great games. Essendon ended up winning by 48 points, playing extremely well in the third quarter.

Round 13 was the re-match against arch-rivals Carlton, who were high after only losing to the undefeated St. Kilda by 9 points last round. In a tight first half, no-one could split the two teams, young defender Tayte Pears playing well against Brendan Fevola, arguably the best Key forward in the game. The second half was a blow-out, to the bombers, losing key play-maker Jobe Watson turned out to be a blessing in disguise, with Youngsters Heath Hocking and Sam Lonergan getting clearances left right and centre, and Tayte Pears dominating Brendan again, conceding 0 goals in the second half, as well as setting up 2 for his team-mates. Andrew Welsh dominated Carlton Captain Chris Judd as well.

Round 14 was against Collingwood, in a Friday Night classic, Essendon lost without key playmaker Jobe Watson, and Essendon lost by 35 points in a dissapointing display. Josh Fraser dominating for the Magpies, avenging his terrible ANZAC Day display against Paddy Ryder.

Round 15 pitted Essendon away against Sydney. In a boring game, Essendon beat Sydney by 35 points, in a game Swans key forward Barry Hall said farewell to his home crowd. Jason Winderlich dominated for Essendon, easily best-on-ground for them.

Round 16 was an interesting affair, Essendon playing Western Bulldogs at Home, both teams hoping for a win. In a controversial game, The umpires influenced the result a lot, all three of them Western Bulldogs supporters, with two of them arguably the most controversial umpires in the game in Scott "Flaming Idiot" McLaren and Ray "Razor" Chaimberlain. Western Bulldogs went on to win by 35 points, but a Bulldogs supporter near said "You guys aren't 5 goals behind us, really you're only a couple of goals behind in my opinion", which summed it up pretty well in my opinion.
