Can't say I Disagree to much. Vaughan had a super series here in Australia and Hayden's been a bit off the boil lately.

Geez, when was the last time a English batsmen was at the top of the rankings? When Gooch made that 300 knock in the early 90's?

I don't know the answer to your question. But re the rankings and that innings, I read on their site a few years ago that they don't consider that his best ever innings. Gooch earned more points for scoring a 140-odd against the mighty West Indies bowling in the West Indies than he did for his 333 on home soil against the considerably weaker Indian bowling. It's interesting how they scale performances according to such factors.

He's not out of place up there, but I still think Hayden is a better batsmen.

Thats probably part of the reason why Vaughan has gone number 1 after his good series against Australia would be weighted in his favour.

Ricky Ponting will be number 1 within a year IMO

I think Gooch made what he considered his best innings(about 140/150) against the Windies at Headingly on a typical bowlers' wicket that they often have there against a top notch attack & he held the innings together(I think we won the game) it was in 1988.There would have been Ambrose, Walsh & Marshall I suppose.
He also smashed a smallish ton off them at I think Kingston in 1980 which would have been against most if not all of Holding/Croft/Roberts/Garner.

I remember the 333 in 1990, that year the TCCB sent out orders to all the counties that the pitches had to be much more batsmen friendly & they also chancged the ball from the ones that we used to use with a big seam to ones with a mcuh smaller seam, the reason was that they were worried by how many wickets crap medium paced seam bowlers were taking who when they were picked for England were shown to be useless.
That year 1990 broke all run scoring records in England, I think Hick hit a 400 there were a few 300s & loads of batsmen made career best scores.
In typical English short sightedness they went back to how it was after that season.

During that summer Goochie was in great form, he actually averaged 100 for the season & that wasn't from just the Test & a couple of county games, he played a lot of games & scored a lot of runs without too many not outs, in that innings he was smashing the Indain bowlers all over the shop but as captain he had to think about setting the Indians a target & wining the match, I firmly beleive that he could (& should) have beaten Sobers's world record score, the Indians never looked like getting him out but as he passed 300 you could see his dilema-on the one hand he felt it was his duty to win the game but I'm sure a lot of people were in his ear telling him to go for the record so he started playing a 1 day style innings, playing reckelss shots & he was evetually bowled by Prabakher playing an audacious cover drive.I was gutted I couldn't have given a stuff about the match I just wanted hism to get the record, the irony is that India beat the follow on & we had to bat again Goochie went out & just smashed them all over the park for another ton which incidently gave him the record for most runs scored in a Test match whcih was previously held by Greg Chappel, so really he had enough time to break Sobers' record.
As it was we set them & a target & won with Gooch running out their last batsman with a direct hit-it really was fairy tale stuff.

Thinking back it's fair to say that it wasn't a better innings than the one at Headingley, I'm not sure about the one in 1980 as I never saw it but from what I read he really took it too them & in those days on the sort of pitches you used to get in the Windies against that attack it must have been pretty special.

I suppose it's true what they say that size isn't everything.

As for Vaughn being #1, he has scored 6 or 7 centuries in his last 11/12 Tests & many of them have been big ones so he's the form man although he has some way to go to be considered the best in the world.
Looking at the domination that Australi have at the moment it seems a shame that the likes of Langer/Hayden/Ponting/Martyn/Waugh-s/Gilchrist don't get a chance to show what they can do against an attack as strong as McGrath/Gillespie/Lee/Warne.

For me that woudl really be worth watching.

PS Yeah Gooch was the last English batsman to top the rankings .

Hayden doesn't rate compared to Gilly.

Ricky Ponting is far and away the premier batsman in world cricket. I can't wait until he finally becomes captain in both forms of the game. The added responsibility has done him the world of good.

This will be the same ratings system that once had Jimmy Adams as Number One, and the South Africans as the Number One Test playing nation, I take it ?

Meanwhile Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara repeatedly smash the best bowling attacks in the world to all areas of the world and hardly rate a mention ...

I suggest you all take a watermelon-sized grain of salt when perusing any of these crackpot lists.
