My "home" game so my review!


A carnival atmosphere in downtown Kalgoorlie for the opening of the FFC Fantasy Footy season was quickly dampened by an unexpected deluge, which quickly turned the pristine field into a bog. The deluge caught everyone by surprise, except of course Allcomers super-coach Paul Roos. Roos, almost as well known for his meteological skill as his mullet, picked the perfect side for the conditions and were away to a flier. Gerald Brosnan however had not been out west for over 100 years and clearly weather patterns had changed. Brosan elected to stay with his height advantage at the opening bounce with Rendell, Farnham & Beecroft all in the starting 18.

The opening stanza was where the game was won & lost. 3 goals to 1 to the Allcomers, with some brilliant individual efforts by Rattray & Dilena, proved to be the difference. Flumpy actually outscored Allcomers over the last 3 quarters, and came home with a wet sail as they grew accustomed to the conditions, but that was of little consolation.

Much maligned full back, R Delaney was simply outstanding for the Allcomers, keeping boom Flumpy recruit Bob Beecroft to just 1 kick. Rattray with 3 opportunist goals in the wet prooved his worth, as did Kev Caton with 2 important majors. M Grace was solid in the middle, although just shaded by Flumpy's McMahon.

Norm Dare was also solid for Flumpy on a wing, however this centreline dominance was not evident on the scoreboard. The 2 towers - Alexander and Farnham had 8 shots between them for only 2 majors. As they say, bad kicking is bad football. An uncharacteristic game from Pastor/Sir Doug Nichols with 4 free kicks against him, and according to some eye-witnesses, was lucky not to have his number taken in an incident with Len Thompson.

Both sides will be better for the run, but Allcomers would have to be delighted with the 4 points after their disjointed pre-season.
