Allan Border Field, Brisbane
Wednesday Nov 18 - Saturday Nov 21
West Indies begin their 3 test tour with their only warm up game on the village green at Albion. With the annual contract disputes over (for the next month anyway) a close to full strength West Indies lineup will aim to get in a good tuneup in an almost rare 4 day practice game against the Bulls.
The West Indies squad features a
- Captain who doesn't like playing test cricket, but will somehow try to lead them over 5 days for 3 tests
- 2 players yet to play test cricket, 19 year old batsmen Adrian Barath (http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/274926.html) who averages 46 and scored a ton in a practice match against an England attack containing Harmison, Anderson and Sidebottom when England toured their last. Also 26 year old paceman Gavin Tonge (http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/53153.html)
- 2 players who played in the strike depleted series against Bangladesh, quickie Kemar Roach and batsman Travis Dowlin.
- 2 spinners
- Former Qld batsman Brendan Nash
This should be a good opportunity for the West Indian batsman to score runs, as the normally placid Allan Border Field surface and a Qld attack which has rested its 2 main wicket takers this year, as well as injuries to the 3 players who were expected to lead the attack before the year started. This sees debuts for Craig's son Alister who has impressed in the pyjama cricket this year and Luke Feldman, who will combine with the Nathan Rimmington and 2 spinners who don't take wickets

I sure do hope he returns, will make the series a little more interesting and exciting to watch.

Is this going to be one of those matches where they can substitute the 12th man in for a batsman when they are bowling? Otherwise I would have thought Tonge would have gotten a game ahead of Deonarine, especially considering Roach and Rampaul are the only quicks named...
I'd expect Dowlin to open the batting in place of Gayle, and it's a good opportunity for him to cement the last spot in the team for the first test. Also hoping for a decent performance from Barath, it's been a long time since the Windies have a decent opening pair and Barath is supposedly the next big thing in Windies cricket.

Dowlin won't make the Windies team next week. He was in there for cover and Deonarine will get first look as he's been in better form domestically. Based on what Deonarine does with the bat, this is a potential first test windies team if Gayle isn't playing.
1. Barath
2. Bravo
3. Deonarine
4. Sarwan
5. Chanderpaul
6. Nash
7. Ramdin
8. Sammy/Benn (depending on the pitch)
9. Taylor
10. Rampaul
11. Tonge/Roach
Ramdin has also opened the batting once before and did a terrific job. Chanderpaul can even open. They have players who have limited opening experience who can open.
Deonarine is going to score runs today and tomorrow and that will push for the Windies to change their lineup somewhat in the absense of Gayle.

How much can you really take from domestic cricket though, considering they have only played 4 limited overs games each?
Since the last first class match Deonarine played in, Dowlin played two Tests where he averaged over 46. Yes, it was against Bangladesh, but he still scored the runs. And it wouldn't surprise me if the selectors showed faith in him especially after playing during the strike.
I doubt it will really matter, given Gayle will more than likely return in time. And then, Nash would probably still be the front runner for that last batting spot, if only for the romantic factor.

Why isn't Edwards and Taylor playing?
I just hope that Gayle can somehow get back in time and play , or this series will become even more farcical.

Taylor was rested. Edwards isn't a part of the tour, he has a knee injury.

Just wondering is there any live streams for the match?
Queensland are slaughtering them here. Sad to see, for Windies fans.

For most of the guys playing for the Windies, they have only played a handful of one dayers and T20's since about April. Match practice and a lot of it is the best thing for them, and the bowlers are getting just that. That's why I'm a little surprised that Tonge isn't playing...

Be nice if Kruger could do this for Qld in the Sheffield Shield

Have a shave Krugs.
The difference is Jeddy, the calibre of bowling in the Shield is about 10x better than the pitiful Windies attack.

From the Bulls website!
"Nathan Reardon's maiden first class century today capped off another rare milestone for the XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls.
Reardon's innings of 147 today meant that it is only the second time in Australian first class cricket history that three maiden first class tons have been scored in the one innings.
The first time was in 1929-30 when O.W.Bill (115 on first class debut), L.R.Leabeater (128 on
1st class debut) & F.Henderson (101 in his second & last first class match) registered triple figures for New South Wales against Tasmania in Sydney.
Reardon (147) was in his second first class match while Nick Kruger's 172 was in his 13th match and Wade Townsend's 100 was in his fourth match."
Love a good stat!

Great all round performance by the Bulls - shame we can't do it at state level (cough......cough.....Nick Kruger) and post a huge score.

The West Indies finished the day at 1/133. Barath is 65* and Dowlin scored 53. So it's good to see both openers finding some form with the bat. Deonarine is on 9*, and will be looking to outperform Dowlin tomorrow.
The West Indies bowled 155 overs, which would have to be good match practice. And by the sounds of it, Roach was easily the best of the bowlers. Interesting that Nash only bowled 4 overs. If he was a guaranteed starter against Australia, I would have thought he would have gotten a bit more of a bowl....
Huge score from Queensland. Wonder if it's a road.

Wouldn't call it a road - not like Adelaide Oval or anything. But the ground does have pretty short boundaries square and the outfield is usually cut pretty short.
From my recollections from games I've seen there, there is good bounce in the deck but it does tend to flatten out after the first few sessions.
The wicket tends to play very true. It can break up a bit when the weather has been dry so might be interesting tomorrow. Hoping to duck out for the afternoon if all goes well. Nice to get a beer there that doesn't cost the earth too!

Anyone know why cricinfo is referring to the West Indies as the West Indians? I can't say I've seen the two used interchangeably in the past, although I guess they mean the same thing and refer to the same team.

Cricinfo only use 'West Indies' for internationals, tour matches are 'West Indians', 'Australians', 'New Zealanders', 'Pakistanis' etc, except England where they use 'England XI'

I had a feeling that may have been the reason. Thanks for that.
