THIS IS ESSENDON! (not Sparta)

Our preseason started about a week ago with the smallest mod-group in a long while. Although there are some disruptions such as Neagle's groin, there are also the great stories of the chronically injured in Winderlich and Gumbleton.

Full pre-seasons await new recruits and the unproven, as they are set on proving themselves worthy of a spot on EFC's list.
______

This would be a good thread for Pre-season talk about players, the club and new recruits.

Bring on 2010.

Can i ask when online memberships open? I've been checking every day for about 3 weeks now, originally it said November 4th, now it's been saying early November for about 2 weeks. Anyone know when it is going to open?

Really? Are we sure the club isn't Sparta? Because I have some pretty damning evidence to the contrary:

Was thinking of a gif of that the other day, with Campbell Browns head on the main guy, then Juddy and Maxwell on the the other archers. If only I had better skills.

a full pre-season into Gumbleton is a thought that truly makes me hard

Lets hope your "hardness" doesn't deflate any time in the future Lance.

I'm touching wood (no not of THAT type children) that Gumby has a ripper season and strings together 10 games.

Myers, Jetta and Laycock were said to be the stand outs at the start of pre-season.

Laycock being able to run impresses me.

Jetta, I have heard nothing but positivity about so far. I'm led to believe it appears he may have turned the corner in terms of coming to grips with the expectations of an AFL footballer, which is fantastic.

Ant even mentioned a possible return of his 'zip' he was known for in the juniors. If all of this translates to a renewed confidence in himself, he could be the small forward we've been crying out for!

I hope Myers can have a good preseason, put on a bit of muscle and get some midfield time. I'm not saying he has to suddenly become a star however I have said previously that I don't think he will make the sort of HBF that some people imagine he would. To me he has always looked like more of an inside player. Even going back to 2008 before he had that bad start to 2009 that saw him gain some negative heat.

A couple of games in '08 he was put in the center and while he didn't show that he was an AFL ready clearance machine, he showed really good reading of the ball off the ruckman's hands, good anticipation and just a hint of class. A couple of times against Carlton he out read Judd easily to the fall of the ball after the tap (unfortunately he got rapped up and didn't get a clearance but the initial skill was there to build on).

I was happy to hear that he was put into the centre at Bendigo in the second half of the year and did reasonably well. Obviously I wouldn't put the house on him as he is still unproven at AFL level, but I think with a good run with injuries he will show good improvement in 2010.

I still have trouble buying Jetta as a small forward long term. To me he has always looked like a midfielder who was played up forward because he didn't have the endurance to play midfield and because he is small and quick-ish so he must be a goal sneak.

I honestly don't rate his work in the forward 50 all that highly even if he has done a couple of nice things on occasion (then again, if you are small and agile and spend enough time in the forward line something is going to go right for you). I remember someone even likened him to Kerr around draft time (maybe not as good, but in style), in that he was small but could win the ball and then had enough burst pace and agility to weave his way out of trouble. Now I'm not sure he can make it as an AFL midfielder either, but when I see him forward he looks like a midfielder playing forward rather than a career small forward.

I remember being pumped when we got Jetta in the 2nd round of the draft. I was still excited when he played some early games, but like many on this board, I have been disappointed since. Let's hope he can put the early trouble and groin soreness behind him and become apart of the excitement machine that is Essendon (Oh yeah, I'm pumped!!).

Gumby could make a huge difference to our side if he can get fit and prove his standing as a Number 2 draft pick. Any luck and he'll drag Neagle along with him.

Talking to an Essendon talent scout at the races and he reckons he picked Gumbletons injury back in 2006 when playing in the wafl. Sure enough the docs found out it was a back injury. Also didn't rate Jetta at afl level lets hope he turns a corner
