View Full Version : ANZ Stadium
Capacity crowd at the Gabba sold out two weeks in advance.
Any support for moving these big games to ANZ Stadium ?

ANZ Stadium is a craphole i don't think anybody would attend if the big games got switched there. It's not in the heart of the city, no trains (usually an easy option to get to games), and it's really not suitable for AFL.

Agree with Lionsforever, ANZ is a dump.
it would kill the game if they even entertained the idea.

ANZ is like a mecano set.Cold,desolate.Yuk.
Does it really have a bigger capacity? Don't the Broncos struggle to get 20,000 there?

no way.
but they didn't build the gabba big enough, sheedy said it a few years ago and he was right.
NO!!!
ANZ is like a giant cemetary and the stands are too far away from the playing area.
I think it has a capacity of about 55,000 but who cares?
It's go absolutely NO atmosphere.
The Broncos have been justifiably killing themselves to get away from for years.
There's no way the Lions should consider playing there- ever.

Re Building the social club area will give the gabba another 8000 which would be better than going to the ANZ
Unfortunately the opportunity was not grabbed properly when the redevelopment was done. I thought the ground was going to be expanded to 50,000 and if that was the casse it'd be fine. But we've got stay at the Gabba it's a better ground.
Thanks for the feedback .I haven't seen the ground but know the capacity of ANZ is 50K+ and it's unsuitable for RL .RL fans say it's the sole reason the Bronco's crowds are down and the Lang Park redevelopement is going to fix everything.I suppose it's too early for further Gabba developement .

They all become Lions fans instead (over the last couple of years) and turn up for the footy at the Gabba. Bit like Peter Beatie and a few other ministers in this city. Pathetic really.
And I agree with the rest of the guys, ANZ Stadium is a $hithole to watch the footy from, like watching from the moon.
cheers ... Kaz
Is it worse than Waverley Park was ?

You keep telling yourself that afl is taking over Brisbane and QLD. Then walk over to the local park and see what game they are playing. Junior numbers, TV ratings, soon to be crowds once the Broncos leave ****ty ANZ Stadium and general interest is all in rugby league's favour. If your claim to fame is a politician than afl is in big trouble! Read this article and weep.
Courier- Mail 29 April 2003, p:
"...the weekend saw rugby league celebrate, after falling behind for the first time at Easter. The Brisbane Broncos easily won the ratings battle, their Anzac day clash with Parramatta attracting an average of 271, 000 viewers, which peaked at 315, 000.
Sunday's Brisbane Lions-Western Bulldogs AFL clash clash at the Gabba averaged 138, 000 (peak 177, 000), well behind the Manly-South Sydney NRL telecast which started immediately after and averaged 246, 000 (peak 269, 000).
All matches were televised on Channel Nine but only the Lions match was shown live. Telecasts of both rugby league matches were delayed an hour."

Exactly!!! Now you know why the Broncos get ****ty crowds! Not because AFL is more popular then League but because of the crappy Stadium!!!!!!! I mean a Souths V Manly game outrated the Lions game on the weekend:o

If your claim to fame is a politician than afl is in big trouble! I don't tell myself anything. I don't really care too much about tv ratings and crowd figures. I just answered the question on this post along with a truthful observation.
Being a born and bred QLDer, I have lived and breathed rugby league all my life. Walk over to the local park and see what game they are playing ... BEEN THERE, DONE THAT... more times than I've had hot dinners. I went to the footy at Lang Park and all the other local footy grounds way before the Boncos were even heard of. I believe the Boncos killed our local comp here. Sad really. Don't like Boncos, never will, they get rammed down your throat till you choke up here. I've been a Raiders fan since there conception in 82. So seeing Canberra's a long way from here to watch footy, I got into the AFL, went to game of footy at the Gabba and loved it. Been following the AFL seriously for 8 years.
My observation is Boncos fans in the early days were going to the games cause they played at Lang Park ( one of the greatest grounds ever) and they gave out heaps of free tickets and they were winning, hence the big crowds. Now they play at ANZ Stadium, don't give too many freebees away any more, and if there not winning, people just don't go.
So the glory supporters have moved over to the Lions in the last few years and started going to the Gabba because the Lions were winning, including the politicians and other sporting stars in this city. The politicians I speak of were the # 1 and 2 ticket holders at the Boncos. Funny how they jump ship when there not winning. And all of sudden they've all been Lions fans for years apparently.
Just have to wait and see how the crowds will go when Lang Park re-opens it doors. That will all depend if the prices are reasonable and the Boncos are winning. See who jumps ship and goes back to the Boncos then.
cheers ... Kaz :)

Yes it will be good to see streams of Bronco jerseys going through the city once again. Rugby league back where it belongs, in the heart of Brisbane city. Fantastic!

In response to your first point - if I turn left and go to my local park I am at the Sea Hawks AFL ground, if I go to the right I am at the Northern Eagles AFL Ground, the kids at the end of my street have a regular AFL thing happening in the park next to the swings.
In response to the second part re ratings, the ANZAC day clash is a crowd puller and not necessarily a ratings puller, especially this year with ANZAC and Easter being the same time and many many people holidaying. Total viewing audience was down year on year as well.
I do think it will be interesting once Suncorp is up and running what the corwd figures are like but I also think at the end of the day who really cares. This is a 3 team town and not many people go to all of them. Comparing League, Union and AFL is like comparing apples, with potatoes with bananas. All very different and all unique. Most people I have met that are new to AFL and new to the Lions have come from a non football background, not switching from league or union.

Does union even hold a decent position in QLD? The Reds aren't very well supported and I was of the opinion it is only played in the upper-class private schools.
