View Full Version : How did Gambhir get so good?

I remember watching him after he debuted and thinking he'd never make it. Loose technique and poor shot selection.
Talk about working on your flaws when dropped. Must be about the bankable batsman in world cricket at the moment, rarely fails and would walk into the opening slot in any side in the world.
Impressive...if only he didn't play for India I'd like him more.
Yeah, I was surprised looking at his healthy average. A great player.
Dogged determination. I've heard that unlike most Indian players, he spends a hell of a lot of time training.
Guess it just goes to prove practice makes perfect ...

i thought he was going to be another sadagoppan ramesh (brett lee's first test wicket) when he first started

Explains his 'away' average of 72.
I thought the bottom line would have given away my sarcasm but alas :(

Nah i'm just ribbing ya. I was quite honestly surprised his away average was so high, but then I realised he has played Bangladesh and Sri Lanka a bit.
Still, he's got an impressive average against Australia.
As I say that, he gets past 160. With 20 overs to go, he's a fair chance for 200 today ...

You got me :(
He did score about 400 runs in the series last year

Sehwag averages just under 50 in Tests and is probably the most destructive player in the game.
Hit 130 off 120 balls today, clearly inferior to Gambhir

Actually, Sehwag's 131 today lifted his average back over 50 to 50.46. But yeah, I agree with you, probably the most destructive player in the game when in form.

He's destructive but i've seen him get out way too many times after a quick start.

He probably trained harder, physically and mentally. The would be the logical answer

Exactly probobly the most destructive batsmen going around but even when in top form the bowler must always feel there is a big chance he will play a loose shot and get out.

Marcus North averaging 50 after two away series against South Africa and England is much more impressive IMO. I could hit 200 on those pitches in India atm.

North has nothing on Gambhir.
And no, no you couldn't.

North is a much, much better batsman than Gambhir.
And yes... he could hit 200 on those pitches.
Don't you know who he is?

Khan > Johnson as a cricketer.

Gambhir has obviously improved a lot as a cricketer since I first saw him in 2004. He looked tentative and at sea (albeit on a nightmarish deck).
Now he's playing with panache and confidence - albeit mostly at home or against fairly weak teams overseas (i.e - NZ).

Done extremely well so far in his Test career but the real tests for him will be England, South Africa and us all away from India.
Still, you can only play who you are scheduled to.
