Watson is worth persisting with until Phil Hughes gets his shit together.

I can't see the selectors looking at the other options mentioned.

Rogers is the one in form, but it seems he has been whether fairly or not he has been judged a sh*t bloke and put on the outer, so the selectors won't go with him

Jaques is the forgotten one, would do and has done the job well, but can't see selectors going past Hughes if they decide to drop Watson

My preference would be either Hughes - Rogers - Jaques - Watson in that order, Watson is a test class batsman, but not a test opener (also I don't really rate his bowling)

well they should never have dropped hughes. that was the biggest knee jerk reaction i have ever seen. they should pick the form batsman in the shield at the moment and imo thats chris rogers

Rogers was out early today so that wont help him.

Rogers doesn't seem to be a good fit in terms of team chemistry which looks to have scuttled his international career.

Watson shouldn't be opener with his footwork problems, Hughes or Jaques for mind. Jaques will need a few more games before the selectors consider him seriously.

Anyone but Rogers.

Whenever Watson is dropped, I'd head back to Phil Hughes. Has Phil Jaques even started scoring consistently yet for NSW?

Rodgers is the best by a mile and everyone that thinks the others are ahead of him are Blind.I dont care about players kissin Rickys butt to get a game put the best in there and Rodgers deserves it before anyone else.Hughes and Jaques have to do more and they are not up 2 it yet so lets all be honest.Chris Rodgers is getting screwed by the selectors and there is no 2 ways about it.

I'd take the bloke who's blasted 6 half-centuries and 3 tons in his 11 tests.

Let Hughes find his feet for another two years in the FC system.
Rogers can go f*** himself, I have no time for FIGJAMs.

Um, they've both proven to be quite handy in that opening position. Did Jaques not score a century in his last test innings? That boy Hughes has a couple of test centuries already, so he goes alright.

Rodgers is almost no chance, and he'd be behind Rogers at this point.

I agree, it was such a poor decision to drop Hughes in the first place. Had shown far too much in the lead up to be treated like he was after a couple of poor innings.

Hughes would be my next pick, though Jaques got a raw deal as well. I don't think Rogers will be considered for selection unless something remarkable happens, based on what I have heard.

So Hughes then Jaques then Rogers.

We all know it was a poor decision. But after Lord's we had to drop someone (We didn't of course), and the selectors were never gonna drop Hussey or MJ.

Jaques for mine. Has done pretty well when he has been given the opportunity. Give Hughes a bit more time with NSW, remembering that Katich is 34 and won't be around forever. I'd move Watson down the order in place of Hussey when he retires.

I think you're entirely correct. At the moment, the best idea is to bring in either Jaques or Rogers, leaving Hughes to keep improving for NSW until Katich retires (which will probably not be too far off). That way, when Katich retires we aren't left with Hughes and another wet-behind-the-ears opener (and I think that by the time Katich has retired, both Rogers and Jaques won't be options anymore).

And out of Rogers and Jaques, I would take Jaques as well. Plus he's a couple of years younger and Rogers is apparently a jerk (does anyone know the story behind that?).

Watson isn't an opener and I think the only reason he is playing there is because he isn't going to break into the middle order (and they want him as a bowling option).

Is it too early to return a WA Marsh to the opening spot?

geoff lawson reckons hughes dropping was a stuff up. before i thought he was only batting for nsw, he also reckons rogers should be opening however he isnt liked in the change rooms and that isnt good for aus cricket .

I'll have to disagree, Rodgers is younger and liked more by Ponting and co. He has more respect from these guys compared to Rogers. Whilst Rogers is a more proven batsmen than Rodgers one has to feel Rodgers has more of a chance to break through to the test team than Rogers, based purely on personality. Lets hope Rodgers starts scoring more runs.

Hughes should be next in line. No doubt. Rogers and Jaques are doing well at the moment, but the selectors have indicated Hughes will be back.

I dont see a problem with asking Hussey to open against the WIs and Pakistan. He used to be an opener for WA. Bat the order as follows:

Katich
Hussey
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
North
Haddin
