Saw on the news that Shane Watson has approached Victoria looking to play for the Vics, the move is pending on whether or not Tasmania are willing to let him out of the last year of his contract.

Vics are also after West Australian pair Mike Hussey and Ryan Campbell.

To be honest I could see Hussey joining his brother playing for the Bushrangers.

I love Ryan Campbell. With Berry and Roach getting on, and that Crosswhaite (Sp?) fella the only youngun we seem to have; Campbell could be a great option for the future.

the victorians could do with someone who is half a chance of making the national squad, albeit in ODI's only.

still, it doesnt say much for the standard coming out of the melbourne grade comp.

You can have Campbell. From my inside sources at the Warriors they need to bash down the walls at the WACA rooms just so they can fit Campbell's head through every time he comes back from Australia A.

As much as I love watching him bat, we don't need Campbell. Berry is still the best gloveman, Roach is a handy replacement and Crosswhaite will be the goods. Hussy is maybe, as we dont really need another middle order batsmen, although his brother is here which makes it likely. If the Harvey rumours are true then Watson may be the perfect replacement.

Do the Vics ever make their own home grown players

Not quite...

Campbell (31) is three years older than Roach (28).

not to mention one AC Gilchrist and another JN Gillespie.

ev fenton, we all remember the "glory days" of victorian cricket when flemo and chippen were fringe players of the national squad, but alas, retirement since beckoned

Thats what I thought i don't think NSW can claim him.

he played junior cricket in NSW before his family moved to SA. lucky for him the skills he developed as a youngster were courtesy of the NSWJCA.

either way, i dont think it changes the original topic of this post that victoria struggles to produce competitive cricketers.

well getting back to the original post, it seems Hussey and Campbell have both signed on and will be staying with WA, although it will depend on the signing of the new coach.

In hindsight that would have to be one of the worst moves NSW cricket ever made. Don't forget though, Gilchrist left NSW voluntarily.

NSW has MacGill and Katich - both from WA. Not that I'd call MacGill a West Australian, any more than I'd let NSW claim Gilchrist. Neither were wanted by their original state, and left to get better chances elsewhere. Made their names in their new states. Doubt there's a single state where all its squad is local. Here in WA it certainly isn't.

sure, you can say gilchrist left NSW volountarily, but who wouldnt if they could never get a game. everyone who moves states does so volountarily. there is no draft.

worst move NSW has made? i'd agree, certainly in my lifetime.

PS: without macgill, NSW cricket is absolutely devoid of spinners. we were lucky to pick him up, even though every grade club wants nothing to do with him!

For those outside NSW can you explain what the story behind this is?

i assume you are referring to not many sydney clubs wanting him.

it has been well reported that he was the social misfit amongst the St George club, and critisised fellow players openly whilst on the field and smashing apart the dressing room. At one stage the Manly cricket club were chasing him but the players flatly refused. they didnt want this "w@nker" as they put it bringing down the club

He has been booted by a number of grade clubs. Apparently he's okay most of the time, but when things don't go right he loses it and starts abusing his team mates.

Craig Mclaughlan then Stuart MacGill? That Rachael Friend sure does have some faulty tastebuds.

Wish we would stop poaching and concentrate on developing our own young players.Something goes wrong between under 19s and state cricket for our young guys.

I played hockey with Stuart MacGill in juniors. He was the same then - talented, but inclined to fly off the handle if things weren't going well.

I later played senior hockey with the guy he got banned from England County Cricket with!

Its called AFL football. State teams have squads of 20-25 players depending on the number of players on ACB contracts. AFL clubs have squads up to 38 and there are 10 AFL clubs in Victoria.

An 18 year old has the choice of entering the AFL draft at 18-19 or play premier cricket (for nothing) and hope they get a state contract by 23 or 24. There are exceptions to the rule like White and Crosthwaite.

Luke Ball, Luke Hodge, Brendan Goddard, Clint Bizell and Damien Cupido were all Under Age state players in cricket. Ball was supposed to be the best under age batter in years.

Maybe young cricketers need to get financial rewards at a younger age.
