Did anyone catch 60s psych legend Arthur Lee and his version of his band Love at the Corner on the weekend? Simply one of the best gigs I have ever seen. If you are a fan of Love and you didn't go, you should be kicking yourself right now. For those of you who don't know of Love, here's a quick rundown. Love were the darkest band to come out of LA (many suggested they should have in fact been called Hate). Influenced by folk rock legends the Byrds, Arthur Lee decided to form a band equals parts pure pop, pure grunt and pure psychosis. Lee churned all the frustations of being a black man in a white man's world into his music. His songs dealt with such issues as heroin abuse, paranoia, depression at a time when pop music was about having flowers in your hair. Love never had commerical success although they had huge critical success particularly with their third album Forever Changes. Forever Changes is a constant top 10 in critics lists to this day. Love interestingly found a new audience with the punk movement in the 70s who could relate to his nihilistic view-the Ramones, Jeff Dahl, the New Christs, Dead Moon, the Leftovers were some of the high energy bands who covered Lee's songs. Arthur ended up in gaol in the 90s due to the three strikes law in the states. After being released from prison, he set about re-establishing his musical career. If his set at the Corner on Easter Sunday is anything to go by, he has done that and then some.

Well I'm a bit of fan of Love but I would argue that they weren't a darker band than their contempories on Elektra-The Doors.
Taking a very selective:D couple of quotes to back up my point what's darker?:
'....the snot has caked against my pants.....'
or
'........father I want to kill you'
Hehe I'm sure you could come back with some that blow me away Rusty.

Signed DC by Love-"Well, I've got one foot in the grave, yeah, and no-one cares for me" vs "I am the Lizard King " by the Doors.
Your turn ;)
Hehe well I always thought 'I am the Lizardking' was pretty dark, I mean the king of all the lizards-that seems a pretty dark thought to me.
Anyway unable to resist a reply here goes:
'People are strange when you're a stranger
faces look ugly when you're alone
women seem wicked when you're unwanted'
-People Are Strange (The Doors)
'My love she comes in pretty colours
you can tell from the clothes she wears'-
She Comes in Colours (Love)
Back to you:D

All right.
Love-My Flash on You
"I don't want to be in your company
I don't need you to take care of me
Let me alone, let me alone, let me alone, can't you let me be
All I want in this world is to say I'm a man that's free"
vs
The Doors-Hello I love you
"Hello I love you, won't you tell me your name"
Your shot :D
