I thought I'd ask all u Hawkers out there firstly who u think the greatest Hawthorn player ever is(by this I mean he had to be at his best at the club, not like Gary Abblett who obviosly had his best years elsewhere)& it doesn't have to be someone you've seen play,it could be a player from the past that you've only read about or member of your family have told u about.
Secondly who's your favourite player & why.
Despite taking the name of the one of his team mates ,my favourite player would have to be Dermot Brererton as he oozed class & just seemed to have that star quality that not many players have & I liked his little charge through the Geelong huddle in the 89(?) GF.
On the greatest player ever I don't think that I'm really able to give an informed view on that but I suppose from what I read that Leigh Matthews must be up there.
Anyway I look forward to hearing your choices & the reasons for them.
Cheers

Best ever was Matthews, forget Carey,Ablett,Lockett etc. 8 B&F in a side that contained legends like Knights,Scott,Hudson,Tuck he was that damn good. Simply the most efficent and ruthless player ive ever seen. Not the most talented or quickest/tallest/skilled, but far and away the BEST.
We were lucky that he was ours.
Favourites? Hmm Leighs up there but i guess its down Knights, BUCKENARA or Collins. Knights when i was a kid clear favourite. Met him when i was about 10/11 years old and chewed his ear of for an hour. That he would put up with this fat little kid talking to him for that long speaks volumes for the great bloke he was. Bucky for the magic and Pills Collins because i picked him out of the ressies as MY player. Also cause he was such a deadset little goer. Only ever saw Weightman cut him up ever.

I'd have to go along with Matthews but don't forget Tucky is the most decorated player ever and Brereton is a living legend, the mainstay of the 86-91 all round awesome team.
My favourite would be the 'Rat' Platten, who along with Dipper would be the most well known AFL players outside Australia.

Best ever would have to be Matthews although I wish I had seen Peter Hudson play. Only saw him once after 39 knee recons in his comeback year 1977 in a state game in W.A & he kicked 10.
Favourites- Dunstall, Langford & Darrin Pritchard.
Grendel I am very proud you managed to mention Andy Collins without any arousal mentions. The counselling is doing wonders mate!

Coming from an outsider's perspective, the best player to ever put on a smelly pair of Hawthorn boots would have to be Jason Dunstall.
Goatmaster - great name anyway you reckon Matthews was the best... well I could sort of agree if I go by what my great great great grandfather says.
The Dutchman!

Same ol same ol this topic...
BEST: Lethal by a country mile
FAVOURITE: Bunga - great full forward and very, very unselfish - the player Lloyd has obviously modelled his game around (except with a full head of hair... hehehe)
LEAST FAVOURITE: Take your pick out of Judge and C.Robertson - close call but it has to be the latter for his 83GF king hit effort .

Leigh Matthews...another Ned Kelly in my opinion Matthews is a coward, to king hit Neville Bruns from behind was a gutless act and thus instigating the need for "behind the play" video reporting. Then if a convicted criminal is what you want so be it.
