All the cricket World Cups have been every four years except for the period between the '96 World Cup and the '99 Cup...

Can anyone tell my why there was only a three year gap between those two?

Im not sure. There was also a 5 year gap between the 87 world cup and the 92 world cup. I think they were just messing around trying to find the perfect length of time.

my question is why was the ICC knockout trophy held 6 months prior to the world cup. surely it needs to work on a commonwealth games / olympic games format, 2 year break in between each.

I would suspect they were trying to ensure that the Cricket World Cup was a long way away from other major sporting events (Olympics, Comm Games, Soccer WC etc), and using what I tend to think of as the last year of the sporting cycle (ie Olympics in the first year), they have a year with minimal other major events to compete with it.

The WC is held every 4 years - true.
It started in 1975, then, 1979, 1983, 1987 and .....Feb/Mar 1992...
This is because it was held in Aust/NZ and had to be held after the normal summer fixtures were finished. The fact that we picked the wrong summer never occured to anyone. (should've been held in 1990/91 not 1991/92!)
Therefore the next one was scheduled for 1996...
A dash of common sense was then used in 1999 to bring the cycle back to its right 4 year cycle..

No doubt, if the last WC had been held in Australia again, we would have again scheduled it for 2003/04 instead of 2002/03 (as long as it had "2003" in it!) and then played it in March instead of the previous November and again put the schedule out so its at least one thing that the South Africans got right.

In 1990/91 there was no Southern Stand at the MCG. They waited till 1991/92 so the final could be attended by 90,000 people. In the end 87,000 people went.

If it was staged in 1990/91 the MCG games would only have held 45,000 people.

Actually evfenton78 I think you'll find that they encountered another problem in it being in the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Stand was rebuilt for the WC final not vise versa.

The ICC Champions Trophy is a yearly event right? I guess they had no other time to schedule it.

I think the Wills International Cup (nicknamed 'mini World Cup') later ICC KnockOut later ICC Champions Trophy scheduling has so far been somewhat ad hoc... Much like the tournament's name itself.

Whatever they call it, is there anybody who thinks it is an important event?

If it was ever held in Australia I think there would be a fair bit of interest. But since its always in the sub-continent it's just seen as another one day series.

It was in Kenya a couple of years ago, when Brett Lee hit a 6 through the windscreen of somebody's car in the carpark.
