Matt Spangher

Height: 193cm

Weight: 93kg

DOB: 23/04/1987

Recruited from Eastern Ranges in the 2005 draft with pick 34. Plays for East Freo in the WAFL

Debut: 2008

Games: 18

Goals: 3

Finally got a regular run in 2009 he will be looking to really consolidate his spot in the side. Many of us would like to see him get some time up on the wing where he has shown he can set up the play well. Best game of 2009 came against the tigers in round 22, where he played very well as a rebounding defender, having 24 possessions, 9 marks and even caused some BF members to start comparing him to Scarlett.

Gives 110% in every contest and has good pace. Gets beaten on the lead every now and then but should improve now that he has had some experience at AFL level. Provided he stays fit over the preseason and plays reasonably well during the NAB cup he should be a very good chance for Round 1, similar to last season.

Most likely will be captaining the dream team "Spanghers Minions" again next season :D

I heard it took them a whole year of episodes to tell each one of his lovers that he was cheating on them with the other ones. The season finale included a 1000 way gang bang, Spang being the only man there still managed to satisfy them all.

Pretty quiet on the media front when it comes to Spangher so just a small piece from the WAFL report.

Matt Spangher
Produced another terrific effort at half-back on a variety of opponents. He was strong in the one on one contests and read the flight of the ball well to assist and cut off forward opposition entries. He also used the ball very well.

Gets a birth in the team v Port, hopefully brings his round 22 game and shuts down one of the Ports tall forwards.... They do have tall forwards rite? as in more then one.

Spangher will most likely play on Westhoff, who plays that high HF/wing role now. Perfect match up, hopefully he runs off him at every opportunity.

Love the attacking aspect of Spangher's game, one of the few Eagles who really does aim to take the game on. Just needs to on the defensive side of his game and disposal.

Yeah. His attacking game is pretty good when on song he's a great rebounder, hopefully we can generate some space up the wings and flanks and give him something to kick too.

I like Spangher as a loose defender personally. He attacks the contest hard, is a good height to affect the contest and those stab passes look really good when they come off.

Sorry to drag this thread up but I couldn't find another more appropriate thread. Spangher kicked 6 goals in the Swans Reserves 188 points victory over Queanbeyan on Saturday. I was just wondering:

1. Has he ever played forward either for you guys or at WAFL level.
2. What were his major deficiencies that led to the Eagles letting him go? I read here that he's not the greatest defender, is he another of those players who are too tall for their own good. I.e. They are a shorter man trapped in a taller man's body and hence are pitted against bigger and stronger players they really shouldn't be opposed against?

He looks very athletic, moves well and quickly and has a penetrating kick - I can see why the Swans picked him up.

He certainly never played forward for the Eagles and I'm 90% sure he never played forward in the WAFL either.

I think his biggest weakness was that he couldn't really read the ball in flight to spoil. He wasn't the strongest KPP out there either but he had some mongrel and provided plenty of dash from the defence.

Didn't he struggle one on one as a defender?

I always thought that was his biggest problem.

He did get played as a wing for a couple of games. I know he played as a wing in 2009 against Brisbane in round 1.

Just an update for those interested.

Spangher played forward and backup ruck for the reserves yesterday, only because Pyke withdrew through injury. He kicked 5 more goals in another big win and impressed our watchers with his athleticism, competitiveness and skills. However he wasn't named in the best list.

He asked to be traded, I think because of a lack of future opportunities. He only played 26 games in his 5 years on the WCE list, and he could see that he was behind Glass, Mackenzie, Schofield and Brown in the tall defender stakes, and that Hurn, Waters and Butler were all automatic selections when fit.

From memory, for mine, his best attributes were his strength and speed for his height (194cm), which gave him a bit of an x-factor and also his occasional run from defense. His weakness was that he would often give his opponent too much space. He seemed to want to be a loose man in defense. He could certainly play, but didn't seem to want to be accountable for an opponent. Maybe that attribute makes him a better forward than defender. His height and speed would make it tough for the opposition to match up on up forward.

It would have to be as a forward as the backline is crowded as it is. Given how dysfunctional we are at the moment he would be in some contention.

There is no doubt the bloke had potential - we saw that at the end of 2009.

However he played poorly when he had his opportunities early in 2010, and that was when he needed to take his footy to the next level and cement a spot in the team.

LOL.

Almost sure he'll play as a forward. Hope he's half as good as the last ex-Eagle to wear 27 for us.

Article: Spangher gets chance for Swans (http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/afl/9803797/spangher-gets-chance-for-swans/) by The West Australian

"Former West Coast defender Matt Spangher has finally forced his way into the Sydney Swans line-up. He has been named on a half-back flank for Sydney's game against Gold Coast at Carrara on Saturday night."

Swans match committee have a laugh about the named team. Grundy is also listed at FF and we all know that is not going to happen. They name players all over the place and never where they start.

Good luck to Spangher alongside Reid and Goodes up front.

Average player, tries hardbut is too prone to making errors in defence. Don't think he will last all that long at Sydney.

After kicking 6 goals for the swans ressies last week, Spangher got a shot in the seniors.
Kicked his first goal for the swans as Adam Goodes couldn't resist the love and popped a handball over the top to Matt in the goal square.
Missed a super-Spangher running goal so finished with 1.1 and a dozen touches.

Not to late to start his run at winning the Swans B&F.

Spang is starting to achieve cult status with Swans fans. The following was created by Nich on RWO (who also posts here on BF I think) after the forum noted his strut whilst resting on the sidelines during one reserves match.
