View Full Version : TV Forgotten TV Shows
Which TV Shows do you remember that were reasonably popular at the time they were made, were of good standard; but have since vanished into obscurity and are not available on DVD and never shown in syndication.
A couple I remember are:
Good Guys, Bad Guys - A great Australian Crime/Comedy series from 1997/98 set in Melbourne and starring Marcus Graham, Allison Whyte and Travis McMahon, it was only on for 2 series and seems to have been forgotten.
The Thin Blue Line - An English sit-com from 1996/97 set in a London Police Station and starring Rowan Atkinson, this was quite popular at the time, but I have never seen the show for sale or seen it for more than a decade.
Between The Lines - early 90's UK cop show set in the C.I.B department.Starred Neil Pearson and Tom Georgeson.Don't think it's been on TV for years.
Drop The Dead Donkey - 90's UK Tv show that was set in a TV newsroom.Starred Neil Pearson,Stephen Tompkinson [from Ballykissangel],David Swift [brother of Richard Bucket from Keeping up Appearances]
Home To Roost - mid-80's comedy starring John Thaw and Reece Dinsdale as a son, whose about 17,comes to live with his father after years of not seeing him.
Don't know if I'd describe Drop the Dead Donkey as a 'forgotten' show. It's repeated on Comedy Central and the DVDs are pretty easy to get ahold of.
BackBerner is the one that springs to mind for me. It shat all over The Glass House for quality N&CA satire during its run, but the inferior program is a heck of a lot better remembered.
Race Around the World is another program that was massively popular during it's short run, and you can't find much to do with that these days. John Safran streaking through Jerusalem is an enduring memory.
I'm sure Newstopia will fall into this category in the next half decade. Chronically underrated show, not helped by its timeslot.

The Col'n Carpenter Show - One of the best and most underrated Aussie sitcoms from around the early 90's (not that there was much competition back in those days).
U4IFvr-JVEo
In a similar vein, although probably a bit less forgotten, was the Lano & Woodley show. It should've been huge but instead it was usually buried somewhere late at night on the ABC, like most of the best programs.

Was coming into this thread to say The Mole.
Loved this show, never missed an episode of the first 2-3 seasons, it went downhill quickly though especially when they tried bringing in Tom Williams for the 5th season. I still remember how amazed I was when Allan was revealed to be the mole in season 1, I was convinced it was the young gal.

Duckman - private dick, family man
jason alexander providing the voice for duckman. the voices also included nancy travis. the guy who played cornfed had a very low voice, probably coming from his toes

' Rat Patrol'...featured on Ch 0 (maybe Ch 10) in the afternoons after school.
Incredibly violent and totally inappropriate to be shown in kids hours, but the boys loved it! Probably led to a total overhaul of kids hours after school, but every dragster in the hood had an imaginary machine gun strapped to the back to blast those desert Nazis around the corner...

Seconded. The son was also voiced by Dweezil Zappa, Frank Zappa's son.
I am not sure if Nowhere Man is available on DVD. Bruce Greenwood played a photographer who comes back home and no-one remembers him and its all linked to a photo he took of a hanging. Excellent series.

Also another worksing dog/d-gen show the late show, one of the funniest aust skit show of all time IMO. shitscared. shirty the slightly agresive bear, graham and the colonel, bargearse.

oh oh oh!
how about murder one
unlike the other law david e kelley law series, the first series was pretty intense, one whole court case going for 12 episodes
the second season didnt have the focus as it did on the first season, there were a couple of cases in the second season, but i lost interest. the defendant in the second season was a fictional basketball player named "ricky latrell" (ha!)

Isn't Comedy Central an American channel ?
Yes it's on DVD but it was never released in Aus on DVD.

I'm 21 now, and all those I remember watching at some point growing up, either as a little kid, as a teenager, or withing the last couple of years, either during their original runs or on random re-runs since. The quality varies (a few would probably be considered garbage by most people), and some were only watched just for pure comedy/stupidity value :p Still, these shows all deserve more of a re-run IMO, either late at night on FTA or Foxtel.
The one show I'd love to get on DVD is Prospects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospects_%28tv_series%29) (saw re-runs on UKTV a few years back, and loved every minute of it), but I don't think it's available :(

E Street is on DVD.
One of my all time favorites is The Restless Years- a huge hit at the time (late 70's/early 80's)..but sadly neglected in the DVD age while contemporaries such as Prisoner(full series) Sons & Daughters,#96 & The Young Doctors (best ofs) all got released on DVD.
Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place. Stars Ryan Reynolds - 4 seasons and never been on DVD... I'd LOVE this to be released.
Now and Again - Axed after one season and ended with a cliff hanger from what I remember, I used to love this show.
Just Shoot Me! - I have the first and second seasons... Waiting for the rest to be released!
Captain Planet and Mr Squiggle - These were my favourite shows as a kid. :o

Between The Lines - early 90's UK cop show set in the C.I.B department.Starred Neil Pearson and Tom Georgeson.Don't think it's been on TV for years.
Great show. In the main written by J.C. Wilsher who knows how to write great British cop shows. Had everything. Drama, gritty violence, intrigue, suspense, political games both inside the office and outside, a bit of comedy and self deprecating humour as well as some good looking young ladies who seemed to drop their clothes at regular intervals. Well worth getting series 1 and 2 on DVD from the UK.
The Manageress , UK show from late 80's starring Cherie Lunghi and Tom Georgeson. About a female taking over as manager of a 2nd division soccer team.

anyway: dark skies was ANOTHER x-files rip off, but the x-files was a show that went on so long to the point it ripped off that show instead :p, or... any show

Fair enough just thought more along TV shows not been shown, not talked about for a while, regardless of who is in it. Anyway, that now and again show was freaking amazing i used to love that show I have been trying to find it but had no luck.

Was very popular in the US but less so here, mainly due to Ch.9 burying it late at night after Letterman like they did with Curb Your Enthusiasm.

ed was an unexpectedly good show
tom cavanagh (the guy who played the bowling alley lawyer) became a regular guest on Scrubs (as Jd's brother) and thus that show wasnt that far out of my mind
its sort of like seinfeld, the actress who played jerry's mother, she was from Alf, and its hard to forget alf, even though that show was around when i was only 5 years old
Norm - a comedy from the 90's/early noughties that starred Norm MacDonald [Little Chubby in My Name Is Earl],Laurie Metcalf [Roseanne],Max Wright [Alf],Ian Gomez [Drew Carey Show],Faith Ford [Murphy Brown]
NormMacDonald plays an ex-hockey player who is banned for life for gambling and tax evasion and is sent to do community service work as a social worker.

Love how the guy ditches his girlfriend and bolts in that. :D
There also used to be a show late at night on Channel 10 called Scream Test, where 4 or 5 contestants were put in a haunted building for the night and had to do these challenges. The producers used to create some extra "scary" stuff, like pipe in sound effects, or rig rocking chairs to rock by themselves in order to scare the contestants more, but some of the haunting stuff actually happened. For instance, in one episode, a ghost supposedly "attached" himself to a female contestant and followed her around everywhere, until one of the show's psychics came in and told him to get lost.
:thumbsu: on the Kenan and Kel mention. That show was funny as ****. Not like this lame ass Drake and Josh they replaced it with a few years later. Ill add
Freaks and Geeks
Kyle XY
How the **** were these two shows cancelled
Shows that dont get enough re-runs
Gilligans Island
Married with Children
Just Shoot Me (eclipses Seinfeld for me in consistency)
Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Cheers
100 Deeds For Eddie McDowd
Kenan and Kel
Nine have been showing a lot of 1st season Gilligan's Island lately. On the weekend there were two eps in a row.
Cheers is on Foxtel where it gets played often but it's rarely if ever on FTA. Watching season 7 atm and IMO it's a serious contender for best ever sitcom.

supernatural is the x-files's present day incumbent, but that show is absolutely derivative and awful! it had paris hilton on it for crying out loud

its almost like a show exclusively for the ladies because its got two male leads this time around.
funny but in this day and age there are certain shows only a man, and only a woman would watch:
women only watch:
disparate housewives
sex and the city
borderline- supernatural
men avoid those shows like the plague

Twin Peaks was a great show, not really forgotten though - kind of a cult classic now.
alongside the simpsons and seinfeld, the least forgotten tv show of all time is the x-files
supernatural is the x-files's present day incumbent, but that show is absolutely derivative and awful! it had paris hilton on it for crying out loud
yes but they chopped her head off :thumbsu:
it is x-files/buffy lite though.:thumbsd:

that, along with 17 other x-files ripoffs!
come to think of it, was the 90s really that much better as a decade in terms of quality of television? at least these days we can download things we dont get to see

Goodnight Sweetheart.
From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodnight_Sweetheart); Goodnight Sweetheart is a popular BBC sitcom that ran for six series from 1993 to 1999. It stars Nicholas Lyndhurst as accidental time traveller, Gary Sparrow, who leads a double life after discovering a time portal allowing him to travel between 1990s London and London of World War II.
Great show, lots of humour and drama.
UK comedy series "The Comic Strip", not sure if it was shown here but if you ever see it on dvd its definatly worth a purchase, has comedians from The young ones, Ab Fab, Alexi sayle, Vicar of dibley. If you've ever seen the episode 'STRIKE!" you know the genius of this show.
Also... mainly uk shows but most were shown here
- Inspector Morse
- Cadfael
- Only fools and horses
- Sherlock Holmes (1984-1994 series)
- Lovejoy

I think the Chopper skits he did got a lot of exposure. Thus people began to watch the show. They then realised how ordinary it was.
