For me the team name needs to be West Sydney as it rolls of the tongue better.
Also Western Sydney is more used in a description or following other words.
e.g.
West Sydney Wolves
or
West Sydney Pioneers
compared to
The team is from Western Sydney
or
The University of Western Sydney

Yeah, I agree
On a slightly irrelevant note , does Western Tigers seem the obvious choice over Wests Tigers ? just irks me .
What about the other choice - dropping the "west" part altogether and have just Sydney Wolves etc . Down the track it could be important . The West Coast Eagles are now ruing the fact that they could have been the Perth Eagles .

Western Tigers does not work, yes Wests Tigers is probably not the best choice (though I have gotten used to it being a Tigers fan) but for the Tigers to have Western before it and to sound good the name would have to be Western Suburbs Tigers.
As for being just Sydney Wolves, it would clash with the Swans. Yes West Coast may be ruing the decision to not go with Perth but they did not have another team in the city to contend with unlike GWS and the Swans.
It is a similar issue with the A-League when the new Sydney team joins in 2011-2012, there will be initial issues with their being the two teams with Sydney in their name (Sydney FC and Sydney Rovers) but I am sure that within a small amount of time it will become the norm to call the teams Sydney and Rovers, this however wont really work in the AFL as the location of the team is more important in the names of teams as there is a tradition (look at North Melbourne, they went to being just the Kangaroos but have now gone back to being known by their full name, and the Western Bulldogs lost some of their tradition when they changed from Footscray), it has even happened in the NRL, with Canterbury-Bankstown changing to just the Bulldogs but now going back to the traditional name.
So really it is best for GWS to use West Sydney to differentiate themselves from the Swans and to try and gain support in the part of Sydney that they are from rather than trying to compete with the Swans for the whole of the city.
I disagree .
Western Tigers sounds much like Western Bulldogs and the dogs have been recently more successful under the wider banner .
I agree the Western Suburbs Tigers is akin to the Brisbane and Fitzroy merger.
The WCE miss out on some sponsorship because they are missing the big city name . This has been evidenced in some sporting teams trying to put "Melbourne" in their title to attract greater sponsorship dollars .
Sydney Swans and Sydney Wolves is not confusing at all .Just like we have geographic notations for teams like Melbourne , North Melbourne and South Melbourne .

But doesn't that go against what you were saying with just having both teams being called Sydney?
There are no two teams with just melbourne in their name, as you say there is/was Melbourne, North Melbourne and South Melbourne.
So by that logic it should be Sydney and West Sydney

Yes West Coast may be ruing the decision to not go with Perth but they did not have another team in the city to contend with unlike GWS and the Swans.
It was never really an option to be the 'Perth Eagles', they chose 'West Coast' as there was already the 'Perth Demons' and they wanted a name to cover all of WA and broaden the appeal of the new team. Remember Perth was a WAFL town in 1987, and the majority of the existing teams were already from the Perth city area (only the Fremantle sides and Swan Districts aren't). It did take time for the Eagles to take off in WA, admittedly they were breaking a different kind of market than GWS.
I think for GWS they'll go for another broad geographic name. It's a tough one though because in reality, the AFL would like 2 equalling strong teams with an equal market share in Sydney, the name is important but doesn't tie the side to one area in particular. Fremantle, for example, is WA's 2nd team but it's not exclusively followed by people from Fremantle or south of the river, they are just an alternative to WCE.

.Wests Tigers got their name as a result of a merger - the old Western Suburbs Magpies were known as Wests and that name was included as part of the merger deal.
I prefer West Sydney to Western Sydney, because the name is shorter. But it's a tricky one - we already have West Coast and Western Bulldogs in the league, so our club will be the third team with West in their name when 2012 comes around.

Didn't the AFL have to take Western Sydney because West Sydney Football Club was already trademarked?

I don't know.
I haven't heard that one before but it sounds like a pretty reasonable explanation.

West Sydney would be my preferred choice
Quote? Source? How do you know that they are regretting that they were not named the Perth Eagles?
Because it was a big issue at one stage here in the West .
WCE was an attempt to identify with WA , but then Fremantle can along with a definite identity and West Coast then became identified with the North of the river and Fremantle South of the river .However the name Fremantle contains some marketing clout where as WC has nowhere near as much as Perth .
Management recognised this and took it to the members where it was defeated as they had become used to the name by then .
.

Yes and their name was Western Suburbs where the "suburbs" is redundant .
So Western is closer than the new "Wests" which is a bit of a tongue twister.

A good reason to drop the geographical appendage .

Not too sure - maybe 60/40 .
IMO it's a lot easier to say West Coast than Ppperth .
That's yelling it out at the game .
I imagine no-one yells out the "Western" part of the WB at the game
and I can't imagine Sydney people doing it either .
So "greater" has no chance .

I would go for something like Sydney Rams or Eastern Rams. The area has a sheep breeding history with Governor Macarthur.
If they go with a West Sydney image it has the potential to be branded with a negative socio-economic tag (whether it is warranted or not).
If they want broader appeal across NSW and other parts of Sydney then it has to have a broader name. If the market segment they chasing is only West Sydney then the name is fine.
I read the other day that the fast growing Hills District of Sydney has just left WSROC (a West Sydney local govt lobby group) for reasons that it does not see itself as part of Western Sydney. It is a part of Sydney the AFL is chasing for followers as it has money to spend on memberships and has no national sporting team for its residents to get behind.
A marketing dilemma that needs some thought.

I also like the name Rams for the reasons above .
Also there is a link to the ACT/NSW Ramsand I think that GWS wants to tap into that area as well .

Yes , read somewhere that they are looking at playing some games at Canberra especially in the beginning and with small crowds .
They realize that the Swans do have a following down and they could tap into that . Also I feel they are looking ahead and the possibility of it being a c
Canberra team if needed .

Your right but dont quote me but the S is probably Sydney.
Anyway Pioneers for me not to mention it is the name of the under 18s rep side for Western Syndey so it appears the logical choice.
Regardless of what they are called they will get my support wholeheartedly except when the play my Blue Boys. Be great to have a team to take the kids to support that represents their region.
RAMS:
Riverina (Albury - Wagga)
ACT
Monaro (Snowy Mtns)
Sydney
NSW/ACT RAMS - Under 16 & 18 teams.

I can't see the AFL ever going with something other than West or Western at the start of the name. To make them "Eastern" after all this promotion as a side from Western Sydney would turn too many people away.
I do like Rams as the name or maybe Pioneers because it does give that link with the already established football programs in NSW/ACT.

The issue may become a little moot. Either way the club's name will be shortened to "Wests", but to avoid clashing with the NRL Tigers they will probably try to focus the club's image on its nickname.

The club's name officially is registered as West Sydney FC.
Nothing to stop them trading as the Westie (insert moniker).
In Sydney they are known as 'the westies'.
They will be referred as that by media in Sydney (along with their moniker) to differentiate them from Wests Tigers NRL or Wests - Cambelltown.
'Westie' also avoids any AFL confusion between West Coast Eagles, Western Bulldogs, and Westie Whatevers.
The anagram of GWS can become WSW, like WCE.
Go GWS!

Aren't the Tigers Officially "West's Tigers" but it always gets printed as "Wests Tigers" so that magpie fans still have something to latch on to? I'm surprised it's lasted, especially given the downfall of the Northern Eagles when my Bear merged with Manly-Warringah.
Anyway.
Hills district is definitely not in the Westie demographic. There's a huge part of Sydney in the North West that doesn't fit into any of the accepted stereotypes (North Shore, Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Westies, South Sydney, Shire) Anything West of Chatswood, East of Parramatta, North of the Harbour and south of Kuringgai Chase National Park is a kind of limbo Area. The closer you get to Chatswood the more you think of yourself as North and the closer you get to Blacktown the more you think you're Westie. This includes the Hills district. If GWS try for the Hills they'll lose too much out Campbelltown way (the real West). If things go well for GWS in 60 years when league's the boutique sport your grandad watches then they can put two more teams up in sydney to grab South Sydney/Wollongong and North Sydney/Central Coast.
Anyway, West Sydney sounds better but it's 3 sylables which ain't that great for cheers. Western Sydney would be better for that, or Westies.
No it's Wests Tigers, there is no apostrophe.
We are a 50/50 merger unlike the Northern Eagles or St George-Illawarra, that is why we have lasted.

So SyneyGoose, if the Hills districters can suck it up to call the GWS team 'Westies', then we are on a winner. The Westies bit will only be the chant anyway (two sillibuls), the marketing and the moniker of 'Wolves' will be far more evident within the communities that make up the GWS area.
I'm sure that folks in Blue Mtns and Lithgow don't consider themselves 'Westies' , and neither do those up around Richmond. Remember that WSW will be anagram, West Sydney the official title, 'Westies' the chant, and Wolves the media moniker.
I think that gives folks of GWS a pretty wide range and chioce as to what they refer to the team as. The commentators won't be referring to the team as the 'West Sydney Wolves' (maybe only as they enter the field). After that, it will be Wolves this and Wolves that. :D

I am increasingly having no problem referring of visualising the team as GWS as in its anagram and FC name (would have to change).
The anagram really does fit the greater area, incorporating Richmond town, Blue Mtns down to Bowral.
See Mowse's logo design for it in the blACK,orange white. It incorporates a harlequin chess board design which could be part of the jersey as well. That'd be novel in AFL.
So there's three posties in agreeance. ;)

Isnt Rams the rep regional team for ACT/Canberra?
Noticed that the Sydney AFL comp has both a Western Suburbs Magpies team plus a side from Cambelltown. So West Sydney FC (as it is) won't get confused with the Magpies team.
The name of the club - even if it is GWS FC- will be overshadowed inthe media by its moniker, which is why WOLVES is brilliant, as it finishes any West or Western dilemma, which becomes redundant.
Isnt Rams the rep regional team for ACT/Canberra?
Correct .That's one of the strengths of identifying with Sydney down to Canberra .

As much as we want to live in an AFL bubble, the Sydney media already has the rather confusing 'Western Suburbs Magpies' teams in the Syd Aussie Rules comp as well as the RL team at Cambelltown by same name and logo.
Add in the NRL 'Wests Tigers' who are referred to by either name, and you can see why a moniker as distinctive and unique as WOLVES would solve any media or location problems.
The ACT has been a mainstay of Aussie Rules in NSW, and they are rightfully proud of their regional rep team. Rather than usurp that moniker (and introduce more location confusion) why not let it be and go for a new and independent moniker for the GWS club.
From a marketing sense its better, and a chant of 'wool-vies' would suit the Macarthur sheep influence of the area, just as much as Rams, which can only be extended to 'ram-sies' - a tad more effem IMO.
I'll either get skinned or fleeced for that comment.

Grey and black just doesnt work, esp when wet and muddy. (GC Giants RL)
Brown and red is Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL which works but the brown has to be carefully matched. TB lists their brown as 'pewter', ie a metallic grey/brown.
I think the AFL can do better than that. NFL has 32 teams after all, which would kinda restrict their colour choices and combinations.
