Thought this deserved its own thread. Maybe to discuss the performance of our up and coming youngsters as well as other teams.
First game started today with Australia taking on the WI and it seems we lost through bad weather more than anything else. Good to see Mitch Marsh getting a 70-odd but it seems he didn't bowl himself, he being captain which is a little disappointing considering the raps for his bowling after that twenty20 game last week. We probably should have been able to take the last wicket to win but, what do you do!
Here is just a bit of a summary of the first match:
Australia U19 XI: 7/319 def by (D/L system)
Maddinson 74
M. Marsh 71
Beaton 44
Armstrong 37
no major wicket takers for WI
WI U19 XI: 9/263 43.4 overs
Cariah 65
Zampa 3/41
McDemott very expensive 2/60

Im pretty sure it's not correct.
Yeah I looked over that scorecard several times and i could not see any point where the Windies would have won with that score.

Sad but true.
Wow wow wow wow. Hold up a minute.
His captain actually bowled him? Amazing.

He he he - he's the Gold Coast Captain so he had the inside running!;)
Got Grade Player of the Week on the strength of that effort - not sure if that means he gets a start when the Bulls play at the SCG - there's a chance they might look at Cam Boyce I hear.
Another warm up today;
Bangladesh 7/230 (39 overs) def. Australia 210 (38.4)

Mmm doesn't make for good reading.
First thoughts are "no McDermott, no Hazlewood".
So weird seeing a keeper batting at 9 in a OD.
Mmm doesn't make for good reading.
Bangladesh have had great u/19 teams for years. Won't be long until they can build a good team to compete highly at test/odi level.

Who needs them when you have Kane Richardson though? Taken wickets in both games, and scored some runs in the second warm up game too. Just another talented young Redback.
Will be interesting to see how Australia go. Obviously Marsh, McDermott, Hazlewood and Richardson have all played domestic cricket. But there is only so much they can do...
For anyone who is interested a couple of the West Indians (Brathwaite and Creary) were called up to the Test squad during the player strike. So they could be two players to watch for.

Don't suppose you know much about Kane Richardson and what pace he bowls at? Last year in the local twenty twenty comp final a friend of mine said he was bowling at around 140 ks'. I think that if Kane can hit the high 140's he'll have a look into the aussie side later down the track. I say this as there doesn't seem to be too many young quicks going around in Australia that will be able to produce that kind of pace.
aussie1st
13 Jan 2010, 18:19
If hes bowling 140 at 18 then hes definitely one to watch for. None of the young quicks so far are at that pace, most are high 130s at most.
Chris25
13 Jan 2010, 18:35
Not certain, but at this stage I don't think Richardson is hitting the 140 mark (at least not consistently). As he develops, I wouldn't be surprised to see him bowling around the mid-140's. Hopefully like a Jason Gillespie, while Peter George plays the Glenn McGrath role....
He tends to be a bit expensive, but has also put in a few excellent games in regards to strike rate and economy. His all round ability is pretty promising though.

Only games at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval are being shown on tv, which of course just happens to be India's group. ESPN Star Sports being the ICC broadcast partner.
15yo Babar Azam from Pakistan is on 61* against WI.
I'll say he's actually 18.
Games are underway on Day 1
Afghanistan 5/51(27ov) vs India (India won toss)
Canada 4/87(29ov) vs Zimbabwe (Canada won toss)
Ireland 4/80(27ov) vs South Africa (South Africa won toss)
Pakistan 2/138(29ov) vs West Indies (West Indies won toss)
And the 15yo tons up.
Was looking through the other scorecards and noticed Ben Ackland from Ireland was 20. U19 WC...?
Trevon Griffith (WI) 68 from 38....

I was reading an article on the tournament just before and saw this:
"The youngest and the oldes: Pakistan's Babar Azam - at 15 years and 91 days - is the youngest player in the fray, and Naseer Jamali of USA - at 20 years and 126 days - is the oldest. (Associate nations get a year's grace on the age norm.)"

Ended up being bowled out for 262 after 49.3 overs.
Josh Hazlewood and Alistair McDermott batting at 9 and 10 makes for a pretty long tail. Someone like Kane Richardson would have been a handy inclusion in the lower order....
Sort of get the feeling that unless Marsh does something in the middle order, we might see a few more mini collapses like this one (last 7 wickets for 90). But having said that, the bowlers should be far too strong for the American batsmen anyway.
Not surprisingly England and New Zealand are having pretty easy matches against Hong Kong and Canada respectively.
Was actually at the Australia v. Bangladesh game in NZ. The Banga's looked very good, they have two spinners that looked very Dangerous.
Mitch Marsh was one of the main reasons I went to the game and he didnt disappoint early, hit one of the cleanest sixes I've ever seen. He just played through the line of the ball, didnt follow through at all, just punched it over the sight screen, was amazing, unfortunately he ran past one shortly after and started a mini collapse for the aussies.
USA 7/28 after 10 overs atm

Slightly disappointing that after having them 7/28 they went on to make 154.

On paper this has to be one of our stongest U19 teams
Looking at the squads in hindsight there are players in every squad that go on and forge a good international career. A lot of them have a couple of internationals and fall away pretty quickly after that with a number that don't even crack into state cricket.
The 99/00 squad is pretty solid in its depth. Combined with 99 AFL draft, there were a lot of talented kids around that year!
Clarke, Watson, Johnson, S.Marsh, McDonald and Hauritz all Australian reps.
Hartley, O'Brien, Rofe, Cowan all have had reasonable domestic careers.
Batticciotto has popped up just recently as well. A long time in the wilderness for him. Buchanan and Welsford were the others in the team, both played a handful of games for the Vics. And Matthew Baker, there's one that didn't make it to state level.
WI 8/249(50) def Bangladesh 248(49.4) by 1 run. Last wicket was a run out.

Duckworth Lewis gets it right again :)
id say the game was cut to 44 overs and the target reduced to 263, which they got, rather than it having rained when they were on that score.
But still 54 runs for just 6 overs is a rip off.

You do realise it was a printing error and Australia won the game?
There was no way under any D/L system that the West Indies target was going to be 263. Not any over, not any wicket, not any time.
If it rained at the break and it was reduced to 44 overs, they would have been chasing around 6.5 an over (Australia scored at 6.4). So immediately 263 is not even close, being just under 6 an over. Duckworth would have had them chasing about 290.
Duckworth Lewis is good, please read before you comment next time :)

Another solid performance from Kane Richardson, has taken 3 wickets in each of his two games. And that is in addition to a couple of useful knocks with the bat too.
So far they have rotated the players a fair bit, will be interesting to see if they do so even in the finals. Maddinson should return to the top of the order, while Buchanan for Hazlewood could be on the cards too.
On a side note, Kraigg Brathwaite has an average of 90 from his three games so far. Things are looking good for the young contracted West Indian....
