View Full Version : Hawks greatest Ruckman
One word, Scottie.
Salmon was great for his time with us, but it was only a hundred games. Dons was three times that with much more inspiration and viguour too. Maybe not quite the skills though lol.
Greg Dear i always thought was very underappreaciated for the work he used to do.
His centre square and boundary throw-ins were excellent, plus he would always (in the manner of his 'little' brother) put his body into any and all contests. Yes, his marking wasnt much and the total lack of a right side was another negative. Yet hes one of the few rucks i saw (Dempsey was the other) the constantly beat Simon Madden (for some reason he struggled big time against Justin).
Still i guess id better say why i give Scottie the nod.
Leadership, desire, agro,THAT Leap but mostly the sheer will to win that ive never seen since from any other footballer, and Dons been retired for 20 years. He could be beaten down, tired beyond all hope, but you could guarantte that if the next contest came his way that Don Scott would give it everything he had for the Mighty Hawks.
My Captain and perhaps the truest embodiment of the spirt of Hawthorn. Don gets the vote.
Apolgys to Kanga snr, John Winneke,Beck and Peck. Special mention to 'Delicate' Des Dickson whose elbows im told were quite a fearsome site in the mid sixties!! http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif

Scotty - just.
Don's leadership and inspiration get him the nod. He did manage 302 games without being super-tall, greatly skilled or very athletic. Of course, he made up for it with his workrate, drive and absolute passion.
However, he only just gets the nod from two blokes. One is the Fish, who in only five years became the most accomplished ruckman Hawthorn has ever seen, and John Kennedy, a man very much in the Scott mould (or Scotty wsa in Kanga's).
My vote for Scotty.

With all due respect to Fish...Don Scott by the proverbial length of the straight !!
THE most inspiring footballer and captain I've ever seen. Leigh was the best footballer but Scotty the most inspiring.
Grendel...I'd love to watch a game with you one day mate..I've got a feeling we'd be roaring over the same sort of feats..and I dont mean speccies !

Are we a bit influenced by scotty's 'tap' work in 1996?

Don bloody Scott????
You must be dreamin'!
Greg Dear is so clearly the best Hawthorn ruckman of the modern era, and it shouldn't take a Richmond supporter to point it out either.
Hell, Paul Salmon was much better than damn Don Scott!!?!!
Don Bloody Scott ??????

We don't want no Richmond has-beens in our team of the century!!!
Greg was a bloody good player at his best (which happily co-incided with when the team was at its best - 1988-89), but he'll never have Scotty's aura, merger or no merger.
Dear & Salmon were better pure ruckmen, but neither of them captained two premiership teams - Scotty goes in on that stat alone.

Scotty for mine. His desire and determination was truly awe-inspiring. Even without his efforts around merger time he would still get the nod.

Scott for me - but only just
Although I have never seen Scotty play from what I hear he is a bloody good player. His tanacity and from what ricohawk mentioned....his inspiration.
Salmon would be a close second for me but wouldn't get the nod because he didn't play enough seasons for us. He one of the best ruckmen I have ever seen play and if he had played his whole career, or a couple more seasons, with us he would have got the nod.
Oh by the way TigerTank....you...are...an...idiot! http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/tongue.gif

hey what about simon crawshay...he was a gun...?????
no but seriosly didnt get to see scott play but from all reports ive heard be it media books whatever...scott was a great player and would get my vote but it would be on the basis of what ive heard...the FISH was very good for us especialy in his first 2 years when he took the club award back to back...so my vote goes on past history...
plus he is the most passionate of ex players...remeber his speech when the merger was gonna go on.....rivetting....
cheers.

So according to you, Greg Dear was NOT a REAL footballer?
And Paul Salmon? Not a REAL footballer either?
Someone here wouldn't know a good footballer if they fell over one, but I think you got the identity wrong.
Did you actually see Scott play, or are you like StupidHawk (I hope I spelt his name correctly)?

Now, why would you want to start a discussion about the Richmond Administration/backline/forward line... etc!

I'm afraid the honeymoon is indeed over. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/frown.gif
I had to make it back in time for the start of the season. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
As you can see, married life has mellowed me. http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif
Grendel, I thought a man of your undoubted good sense and breeding would have put Greg Dear or Paul Salmon well ahead of Don bloody Scott.
