View Full Version : Sumich a midfield genius?
last season sumich coached the forward line and rob wiley coached the midfield. a got told last night that sumich is now the midfield coach and was responsible for the planning that went into sundays win.
i must say that i was quite surprised to hear this. did anyone else know about this? does anybody know who is looking after the backline? from what i could gather it is a combination of the coaching staff and senior players.

That surprises me actually. I always thought he'd know what he was doing with a forward line but a midfield??? Well as long as it works...why knock it imo. Who is watching the forward line these days???

Maybe Worsfold sees the backline as his department.
If that's correct, Sumich is really establishing his credentials as a coach. We'll need to be careful not to lose him when St Kilda does their bi-annual turnover of their coaching staff.
Champion goalkicker, coach, bread salesman - Suma's quite the Renaissance man.
If true then he's going a long way to becoming a good coach. His tactic to use Rowan Jones as an 'inbetween' man to Cousins and Carr was excellent
Helps when you've got a midfield oozing talent too ;)
He's doing a good job. One thing he should understand though is the need to get better delivery to the FF from the midfield - didn't help Willo much in the first couple of games.

Yeah for sure....He obviously knows what he's doing!
I'm not surprised to hear this, but if Suma is our Midfield coach, then who is our forward coach?
I think Micale is the only guy there doing in depth tactical planning. Worsfold is the General. Sumich the No 2. Wiley the ultimate club man (he'll never leave will he?). And Geppy is an aspiring Cornflakes... But thankfully his only victim was Judge.

Apparently Suma and Wiley do a lot of the tactical stuff.

Suma in the midfield? The last time I saw Sumich in the midfield was in a game against Hawthorn at Subiaco and his opponent Mark Graham decided to run off Suma and go to the Hawks half forward line. I remember Malthouse sending the runner out to Sumich to tell him to pick up Graham!
Poor Suma must have gone up and down the length of the field 6 times - quite funny as Suma didn't really venture out of the 50 meter arc.
If Woosha did ever have to miss a match - would Rob Wiley take over as senior coach or would Sumich get the gig?

I think both Micale and Sumich would make excellent senior AFL coaches, but I'm not so sure about Wiley. I don't know if he's got the necessary qualities to be a senior coach. Good as an assistant coach but I'm under the impression he doesn't have enough self-confidence to lead an AFL team. If by any reason Woosha couldn't coach I would vote for Micale. Something tells me he's the most qualified of all assistant coaches. I was quite happy when I heard he would be joining the Eagles' coaching staff. More than any other assistant coach, Micale is probably the best of them on tactics.
Tony Micale is THE genius - after all, he coached the Mighty Royals to "Three In A Row" :D :D
