Blurring the lines
Like an extended version of Home and Away, Blurred unashamedly caters for the Australian teenager.
The story follows the adventures of five groups of teenagers heading to the notoriously hedonistic schoolies week celebrations on the Gold Coast.
The cast features some talented young actors such as Matthew Newton (Looking for Alibrandi) and the strangely out of place (mainly because he’s 28) Kristian Schmid (formerly Todd Landers in Neighbours).
As the various groups make their way to the Coast, they share in some adventures that make them reflect on growing up and their own personalities.
However, the script is pretty thin and relies on a series of pretty poor gags to keep it going.
The acting is a little below par, which is probably to be expected due to the material they are working with.
A little bit more polish on the characters and they may not have appeared so trite.
Possibly the worst character was the stereotypical prudish girl, played by Nathalie Roy. The writers Stephen Davis and Kier Shorey have gone the tried and overly tested method of giving the girl glasses and a naïve outlook on life that is just not believable anymore.
The relationship between bogans Calvin (Mark Priestley) and Wayne (Travis Cotton) has enough slapstick comic moments to keep the film interesting, but the other characters really have little depth.
As with life, this movie is not really about the end result- but the journey to get there.
Inevitably each character comes to the realisation that to get somewhere in life you have to accept challenges and sometimes step into the water above your depth.
Ultimately, this movie gets that message across in all too predictable fashion.
Rating: 2/5.
Weekly recommended rental: Dazed and Confused (1993) starring Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey.
