Hey boys and girls, click here to follow the IPL auction:

http://www.cricinfo.com/ipl2010/content/current/story/444986.html

Nobody bought Afridi for the base price of 250,000 but Pollard has reached 750,000 in the bidding. Insane. Afridi surely would be one of the first on your list?

Keiron Pollard (WI) - $750,000 - Silent bid goes to Mumbai
Wayne Parnell (SA) - $610,000 - Dehli
Shane Bond (NZ) - $750,000 - Silent auction goes to Kolkatta

There seems to be a bit of uncertainty over the Pakistani players, probably why nobody bid for the expensive Afridi. I'd expect him to go at the end though, possibly at a lower price though. Nobody wanted Haddin or Swann either.

Good to see Pollard fetching some serious money though, the same goes for Parnell right now it looks like....

It's all about youth and speed. Most of the teams already have young Indian batsmen and wicket-keepers. But there aren't a lot of these young quicks like Parnell and Roach, so it's not really that surprising they are fetching so much.

The interesting thing will be to see if any batsmen get picked up. Especially with guys like Tanvir, Naved, Aamer and Gul all to come.

19 Jan 2010, 16:27
It's all about youth and speed.Youth really doesn't matter, everything gets reset after this season, which is also why nobody's paying $250k for 3 weeks of Brad Haddin.

Brad Haddin did not sell for the base price of $250,000

Shahid Afridi did not sell for the base price of $250,000

These 2 are the ones that shock me most. Afridi is probably the best all rounder in the world.

Haddin is a very good batsmen and would do well in the IPL.

Thats the thing that people are missing, I think Ponting would have only been available for 4 of the 14 games, so I'd imagine there are plenty of other Aussies, such as Haddin, in the same boat.

Its the next tier down that might be able to play most of the tournament.

England in Bangladesh at the time of IPL3 as well I think.

Quality keepers are worth their weight in gold. Haddin is majorly surprising. Afridi, well.. I can think of some reasons but can't believe not one franchise didn't have a nibble.

Will be interesting to see how much the other Pakistani's (i.e. Akmal's, Gul, Razzaq, etc) go for.

evdo1706

The reason for Shahid Afridi not getting a contract has more to do with the volatile relations between India and Pak rather than his cricketing abilities. KKR learned it the hard way.

yep - think that's the case as well.

with so many players listed - and so few spots - your best putting the cheque book away until the end.

Not sure how these teams can make money - when they pay squibs so much money

I'd rather afridi at $250k to parnell.

Bond is the man - has a body that can probaby just take 4 overs of bowling

Cannot believe Mcgrath's treatment in the IPL. They just didn't want to give him a go. When they did he dominated one game, went for a few in the second and then he was axed again. Now he's been bought out... he'd be one I'd be after (and he'd come cheap). Just have to take a look at the T20 he played against the Aussies to see what he's made of.

Anderson will be a good buy. Could get 750k

Wouldn't pay that amount of money for Anderson. Gul, Tanvir, Bollinger are all better options imo.

That is true, but IPL teams are looking for certainty and being available for the whole tournament if possible....pro-rata payment will reduce the cost but its an international spot on their list which could be used more productively.

Just checked;

IPL : 12 March to 25 April

England v Bangladesh - start of tournament to last match on 24 March
WI v ZIM - only 12/3 and 14/3 matches
Aust in NZ - start of tournment to last match on 31 March

Cannot believe Mcgrath's treatment in the IPL.

Why not? There are limited international spots and Nannes bowled brilliantly and kept him out of the team. A couple of years down the track and he's too old.

Quality keepers are worth their weight in gold.

Explains why Haddin was passed on then... Tim Paine is a far better option, especially seeing the way he batted in Big Bash and he'd be available for entire tournament.

Very surprised he didn't nominate, but surely he'll be chased next year.

Very interesting that the teams bypassed all Pakistani's.

Be like Israeli or American teams drafting Iranian players... not gonna happen.

Why not? There are limited international spots and Nannes bowled brilliantly and kept him out of the team. A couple of years down the track and he's too old.

Mcgrath was harshly treated, and my thoughts were similar to those of the 10 commentary team during IPL 2. There may be limited international spots but there were times where Dehli's bowling attack looked brittle after Nannes, hence why Mcgrath was later given a short stint.

The thought process was that he hadn't played cricket and therefore was no longer good enough. He played 2 games in the IPL last season 1 beauty, 1 below average game and was dropped again.

He could have provided Dehli with much more than what they gave him an opportunity to do. He showed that he still had his mojo this summer against the Aussies.

Mcgrath was harshly treated

No he was not.

Each IPL team are only allowed to play 4 internationals each match. Dilshan and AB de Villiers were the preferred international batsmen (both T20 guns), whilst Nannes and Vettori were the preferred bowlers... and when Sehwag didn't play Warner usually got a gig.

Nannes probably the best quick in IPL 2 so they would have had to have dropped Vettori on wearing pitches to fit him into the attack, which was never going to happen.

When McGrath played in IPL 1 i was only a couple of months after he retired. Another 12 months down the track and he would have dropped quite a bit of zip, which is very noticeable when you've got a bloke like Nannes taking bags of wickets at express pace, breaking helmets in the process.

He may have been able to do more for another franchise, but there injury aside there was not a spot for him in the Delhi XI.

Interesting that India bangs on about racism and they shun all Pakistanis

This is what would be going through their mind:

* Visa issues - are they going to be allowed in the country
* It's a business - will pakistan players attract an indian audience
* Can you be sure they won't try and throw a match?

I can understand the rationale
