ESSENDON has had some big wins under coach Matthew Knights but none as big as this after it upset reigning premier Hawthorn in a thrilling Friday night encounter.
Inspired by midfielder Brent Stanton and the youth and exuberance of their young core, the Bombers were brave, resilient and in the end defiant in winning 17.14 (116) to 10.12 (72) in front of a sell-out 50,475 fans.

It was a David and Goliath battle at the Docklands tonight as a young and relatively inexperienced Essendon line-up defeated the reigning premiers of the competition in one of football's great rivalry matches.
Despite coming under scrutiny during the week, Essendon's young backline showed its doubters they could limit the influence of Hawthorn's spearheads Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead through solid performances by Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears.

Best (AFL.com.au report)
Essendon: Stanton, Monfries, Lloyd, Davey, Winderlich, Pears, Lovett-Murray, Watson
Hawthorn: Rioli, Birchall, Lewis, Franklin
Goalscorers
Essendon: Lloyd 3, Lovett-Murray 3, Monfries 2, Neagle 2, Zaharakis 2, Lonergan, Hocking, Stanton, Bellchambers, Lovett
Hawthorn: Franklin 5, Roughead 2, Dew, Williams, Rioli
A game I watched on TV thanks to a broken leg, the tactics Knights employed that night really impressed me. Using a combination of successful short and long kicking, and some brilliant performances from the likes of Stanton, Pears, Hooker et al., we were able to completely destroy the reigning premiers, despite being the youngest side on record.
The Countdown so far:
