Gabba, Brisbane
1:25pm Friday January 22
Those horrible green uniforms are back because the series sponsored by the bank with the yellow logo is finally here, and isn't everyone excited?
Neither team's played since November - Australia won 4-2 in India, Pakistan lost 2-1 against the Kiwis in the UAE. Australia were without Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, James Hopes and Peter Siddle at the end of that series and they come back in to replace Adam Voges and Graham Manou, while Mitchell Johnson's the first and so far the only one to get a rest despite only Simon Katich and Marcus North missing from the Test squad. Who carries the drinks? Does Haddin go back to opening like he was before he got injured or does Marsh stay there? Cameron White scored 3 fifties deputising for Clarke at number 4, but if he stays he'll be dropping down to somewhere between 5 and 7, where his record is very average despite the boost of a few not outs. He's also looked pretty ordinary in the Twenty20s although he's been ok without being brilliant in the other format. But the Australian selectors rarely pick batsmen as spare players, so a bowler is likely. James Hopes seemingly secured his spot in the side last season, but with his injury and Watson's form he's already lost his spot for Sunday's game, perhaps suggests he's 12th in line but who knows what the selectors are thinking. Doug Bollinger's took 9 wickets in India and is almost certain to stay, while Siddle managed only 2 in 4 games. McKay took 3 in 2 games. Have your say on who should be accompanying the half inflated bottle of coloured water in this thread (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=667753).
Pakistan have as usual named a stupidly big squad - 17 players for 5 games. From the Test players, Faisal Iqbal, Khurram Manzoor, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Sami and Danish Kaneria are gone. The replacements are opener Khalid Latif, number 3 and former skipper Younis Khan, withdrawn Test squad member and allrounder Fawad Alam, South Australia's Shahid Afridi, Tasmania's Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for his first game since ICL, and perennial squad makeruperer and not so quick Rao Iftikhar. Pakistan were very ordinary in that series against New Zealand but Latif was top scorer and averager and should keep his spot ahead of Farhat. Asif's a certain inclusion while Rana is the like-for-like option for injured allrounder Abdul Razzaq, if both are to play that may see Umar Gul miss out, while Saeed Ajmal's no certainty at the Gabba and there aren't enough spots to play more than one of Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Fawad Alam unless one of them, Kamran Akmal or Shahid Afridi open, which almost always ends up in tears in Pakistan.
No referrals for one day cricket, and the good news is the ICC have sent Bruce Oxenford to New Zealand so it's less likely to be needed so the top three Australian umpires Rod Tucker, Simon Taufel and Paul Reiffel will control this series with Asoka de Silva, and they won't need to do any Duckworth-Lewis calculations for this game.
Slightly later start this year so Channel Ed don't have to waste too much time before the news (now wait for them to get 6 minutes behind the over rate and cut off the last two balls for the news), which won't be followed by ACA. Unfortunately for WA people, you still have to wait 3 hours :thumbsd:, and SA and Qld have to wait until 6:30 to join the second session, but it will still be live.
And finally the BigFooty plugs:
1. There's still twice as many points available in the international tipping comp as have been scored so far by the leader, so place your tips in the match thread polls and you could win a year's BFSC subscription when the Windies go home. Bonus points available in games 2 and 5 of both ODI series, and for the Twenty20 in Tassie.
2. If you want to write one of these threads, post in here (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=524686) - you don't have to wait for confirmation, if nobody else has posted before you or been edited into post 1, it's yours. Try to have them done a day or two before the game.
