Tuesday 08th February, 2011

AFL PNG yesterday announced a strong South Pacific squad of 36 players for 2011. Of the 36 players, 17 are PNG nationals. The Under 16 team will take part in the 2011 NAB AFL Under 16 championships from July 4 to 17 in Sydney, Australia.

The team was picked by building on the success of the 2010 South Pacific team which competed in the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships and the just completed 2010 Oceania Cup, AFL Queensland. This squad comprises the best Under 18 talent participating in competitions conducted by the South Pacific affiliates and was selected by a panel, headed by coach, David Lake.

Of the 17 PNG players who make up the list for the 2011 championships, the list will be cut down by May 31 in preparation for the championships. The PNG 17 are: Slim Collins, Theo Gavuri, Gideon Simon, Ezra Kautu, Scott Johnston, Nathan Malbak, Douglas Kaiwa, Max Lavai, Ezra Gotuno, Brendan Beno, Jason Soong, Richard Stegman, Major Alphonse, Larry Nao, Naime Gordon, Joses Lawrence and Gilmour Lawrence.

I rang the club and they said Ezra Kautu is no longer on the scholarship list.

Considering Footy Record (http://www.aflrecord.com.au/displayrecord/id/77) is saying that Beno is still on an international scholarship with the Lions, and considering *Crash*'s comment...

I think the scholarships are supposed to be for two years?

... I'm guessing Kautu still has his scholarship with us.

I should be able to get confirmation from the PNG guys at the International Cup in Sydney next week. Ezra is not playing but the PNG admin will know.
