Well we were very lucky to win the match today. We had 2 good patches early 2nd 1/4 & late 3rd but were beaten the rest of the day.
Definately need to get some more midfielders in (Vanders, Johno, Piccioane) if we are to beat Carlton. Collingwood killed us in tight today & we almost never stopped their played in tackles while they continually did.
The dithering with the ball when confronted by flooded backlines is a problem. We looked O.K in the 2nd when we ran but otherwise it was poor.
Still I think Collingwood are underrated so 4 points however you get them is O.K

No doubt we could play better but collingwood are a hard opponent in the 1st round....so we should be happy we can play bad and still win....Some of our players were flat...Barker,Dixon,Holland,Thompson in the forward half didnt have any say on the game....except 3 goals for dutchy and 2 to dicko they were just short of match fitness i thought. Crawford did some good things and ran hard...Harford was our best midfielder along with chickys good stopping on buckley..

Rehn looks a great replacement for rehn...some of those thumps on the boundary throw ins were a delight to watch...his disposal is sound...and reads the game well.

Joel Smith was a good player today and probably 2nd best on ground behind harford.

So in all good to take the points and move on to next week to play our bogey team Carlscum. Hopefully we can break the hoodoo.

It was a lucky break, some of our pieces of play were pretty ordinary

Daniel Chick's second half impressed me, a couple of crucial tackles, and Joel Smith is finally really starting to make a difference to the side, goodluck to him!!

Still a good sign to win when not playing well. Seemed they tried things but didn't have the skill or match experience to pull them off. That will get better as the season progresses.

All played in patches, Smith, Clarke , Graham and Rehn all did well and Chicky continued from last year. Good to win with reduced input from Holland, Thomson,Barker and Dixon. That will improve also.

Don't know about Carlscum next week - they didn't play well either, but like us still won.

Very, very happy we toughed that one out. We're still not firing on all four cylinders, but to win a danger game like that was very satisfying.

I had Smith BOG easy. What the hell was going on with all that poor decision-making in the back line? Putting aside the Freo debacle, our back six were the best thing to come out of the Ansett Cup. Suddenly they've gone back to the panicky dills that let us down so many times last year. Especially Croad, who just kept on undoing his good work. Once again Hay was solid, and I liked the work of Tallis and Rawlings. But we've gotta tighten up back there, and quickly. I hate to bag the umpires, so I just won't mention them. We tried very hard to lose in the final stages, but luckily we couldn't quite manage it.

Smith - golden. I had Tallis and Chick around the next best, along with Harford. I think next week we need Picioane back, along with Johnson. We could probably afford to lose Lekkas, and although I liked his work, we may see Clarke drop down.

Drop Clarke??? WHY?? Rock Ang and a few others would all be in line before him. Did very very well for a first up game, will only get better from here.

Winning 'ugly' is always a good sign. True, better to win by good footy, but as stated, we toughed this one out and though it wasnt pretty to watch 4 points are 4 points.

Think the whole side will benifit from this one to know they can win while nowhere near there best standard of footy.

Anyway, im going to bask in the glory of a win, after six months without one, why not? http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Go the Mighty Hawks!!

With you Grendel....a win is a win is a win is a win etc.

Amongst all the ordinary stuff, I thought we got good performances from Rehnny, Harf, Smithy, Radar and Twiggy.

Like Grendel, I thought Clarkey might in fact get more ground time next week. I reckon Rocky will play on the small Carlton ground but Lekka would have to be suspect, especially since KB, Johnno and Lance all played well today for BHH ( see report in next post ).

A sigh of relief, a very sore head (!!!!) and 4 points....it'll do.

When you're half way around the world & you see that the Hawks have won you don't think too much about whether it was lucky or not you just think Goooooooooooo you beauties!

Bit dissapointed that we lost the drinking competition though

I like Clarke. I just noticed that it seems to be a policy with Hawthorn to rotate new boys. It's more of a prediction than a suggestion. Personally, I hope he stays in for the whole year. He has more football brain than half our forward line.

Can we beat Carlton? That's what I really want to know. Pre-season I wouldn't have had them down as a probable win. But now I think we might go close. Any thoughts?
