A few years back I seem to recall Kevin Sheedy talking up Courtney Johns as the next great forward making all sorts of outrageous predictions in the process of doing so. An Essendon mate of mine reckons it was someone else. Can any of you guys help?

Hmm, forward that Sheedy talked up... can narrow it down to a few dozen:
Shane Harvey
Courtney Johns
Goaner Tutlan
Marcus Pickett
Ryan O'Connor
Dwayne Armstrong
Ben the Gooner

I'm not sure if this is a poor attempt at a troll, or a mark of Sheedy's insanity (in a kind of good way), so I'll let it go for now.
If it descends into anything, it's gone, with cards coming.
Did well for a guy without a hip, tbh.

No, not a troll - genuine question to settle an argument. If none of you can recall it, then it probably didn't happen.
And, yes, for a couple of our super catastrophies, try Billy Morrison and Danny Roach for size!

happily for you, I think you are right & your friend is wrong.
Johns was touted as "The Messiah" from Sheedy down. People will rag Sheeds for that, but in truth, Sheedy kept the faith with a talented young lad with massive potential; but who's career had been wrecked by a hip injury that was reminiscent of a car crash.
Johns had all the tools physically. His determination to even play again, at any level, meant he had a good level of mental strength. But in the end, he just couldn't overcome the injury & make it in the AFL.
It's a pretty inspiring story though, and that's in reality why, I think, Sheeds pumped him up the way he did. It was the only way he could ensure both the player & the club kept the faith.
BTW, Aaron James FTW ;)

Nah it was another guy. His name eludes me at this time. Maybe our Pie friend can help us out?

Thank you.
What caused the hip injury anyway?

Courtney "The Unit" Johns as he was know amongst my cuz & I - was cruelled by a DOUBLE HIP REPLACEMENT.
My mum had one a few years back & she described it as about 50 times more painful than child birth. Perhaps one of the toughest operations for an elite footballer to recover from.
Personally loved the guy, shot down before he was in his prime. By all accounts he was an absolute gun as a East Freo Jrn smashing piles of 5 - 6 goal games many weeks.

I lost faith in CJ when I had $10 on him to kick the first goal @ $14 against Port in 2006 at the dome. He got a free kick about 30m out directly in front and he missed badly.
The very next week against Adelaide when we got rogered by 138 points he kicked the first goal from fiddy, just to rub it in a little more.
:(
Gumbleton was touted by camp specialist coaches as the next Carey when he was drafted but I'm not sure if Sheedy had anything to say on it.

Tom Davidson maybe? Probably Billy Morrison though, unless you are taking the piss and talking about Cloke.
Johns is massive in that picture above...
