A little late on this one, but we see another relic of the past on this tour, the One off Test match.
The T20 match is currently underway in Hamilton, Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and Bangladesh are 1/37 in the 6th. As for the rest of the tour...
1st ODI: McLean Park, Napier, 5 February (D/N)
2nd ODI: University Oval, Dunedin, 8 February
3rd ODI: AMI Stadium, Christchurch, 11 February (D/N)
TEST MATCH: Seddon Park, Hamilton, 15-19 February

Up there with the 7 game OD series when it comes to senselessness
You would think that T20's would suit Bangladesh, but they seem to play this format of the game worse than the other two.

TEST MATCH: Seddon Park, Hamilton, 15-19 February
I thought you had to play a minimum of 2 Test matches in a series

The one Queenslander in New Zealand wasn't picked, Scott Styris :p. Or Mathew Sinclair, who's from the Northern Territory.......
Clinical performance from the Blackcraps. I know it was Bangladesh but they just seemed to give up. I was shown up considering how paranoid I was before the start of the series. Then again, I'm a bit of a cynic.

I thought you had to play a minimum of 2 Test matches in a series
the nz summer was going to consist of 5 tests but:
the bangladesh series was dowgraded from 2 tests to 1
the australia test series was downgraded from 3 tests to 2
this then allowed the pakistan series which was meant to be in pakistan be moved to nz for a 3 test series, giving nz 6 tests to host for the first time ever in a summer.

Disgraceful. Get rid of all the other matches and play 3 tests I say. We only have 67 test wins, we could use a few more. And scrap the T20I's against the Aussies and play 3 for the Trans-Tasman Trophy.

It's only Bangladesh, but this Ingram looks pretty good

As I attend about every domestic match that comes around, I first laid eyes on Ingram a couple of years ago. He didn't look anything special. Then he scored a hundred against England A last year for New Zealand A in a series where we weren't beaten, and he hasn't looked back. He has a style similar to Sehwag with the high backlift, and he looks at home in the international game.
Good win for New Zealand. I didn't like the Bangladeshi attitude towards the end. You either die trying or you win. The way they just gave up and tried to bat out the 50 didn't impress me. Neither did the fact Martin Guptill got 2 wickets in 2 balls. Good to see Oram get an international fifty for the first time since August, and Broom finally stepping up. The way he's performed at international level doesn't give him justification as to how good a player he is. Ingram played well, and nice to see Taylor rising his ODI average again for the first time since last season. This McKay bowls well, but I do have a gripe about his technique. He is falling away at the point of delivery. Making a "Reverse R" shape. If he straightens up a bit he'll be able to push past the 150kmh mark that he looks capable of. Southee's average has been getting worse ever since England in 2008 when he was man of the series. Tuffey missed his length far too often but it was good seeing him get up to 139 clicks. Oram bored me to death and Vettori's thought processes know no bounds. Jimmy Franklin should have had a bowl however.

That's the problem with Bangladesh cricket. If the game is not going there way, there not attacking enough and not trying to win. They just place fielders on the rope. There changing that though. They had NZ 5-126 at one stage, which is pretty good but apart from that and Tamim/Kayes partnership of 71 everything else was bad. Hopefully we see a better performance by them next game.
will be interesting to see how bangas go in the test match. i think we'll find out just how much of a chance they are when nz bats, if they can get through nz's seemingly perpetual formless top/middle order (taylor is quality) or whether the guys like redmond, fulton, guptill, mcintosh, if they play, get stuck in. i was suprised to see guptill only averaging mid 20's, looks pretty handy at limited over level.
has franklin played as a batsman before?
aidancdaman
6 Feb 2010, 17:21
Not for New Zealand, no. But the amount of runs he's racked up for Wellington in the last couple of years suggest he is more than capable of playing as a batsman.
Oh, and Fulton and Redmond won't be considered. Redmond was dropped in November 2008, and Fulton is consistent. Consistently shit. McIntosh is actually a solid opener who I'd back to get better and better at test level, but Guptill will never be a good player of the longer form. He only averages 28 in Plunket Shield cricket for Auckland. Pathetic.
FFS. Drop Ashraful for christs sake.

Not too much trouble. Good all around effort. Looks like this series might be Neil Broom's last hurrah. And nice to see James Franklin hit some out of the middle.
Franklin will be dropped before Broom...

Franklin at least has experience, a century and wickets in the bag. What does Broom have? 1.70m of height........
NZ 6/505
Guptill 183*
Tuffey 7*
McCullum out for 185
McCullum and Guptill have posted their highest first class scores
The 6th partnership of 339 is the 3rd highest 6th wkt partnership in test cricket history.
3rd highest partnership for any wkt in test cricket in New Zealand. 2nd highest partnership for any wkt by a NZ pair in test cricket.
2nd highest partnership for any wkt in first class cricket at Hamilton. Highest for 6th wkt at Hamilton

Ended up with plenty of records broken and grabbed:
-Highest 6th Wicket Partnership for New Zealand;
-Highest partnership in Hamilton;
-Martin Guptill's highest test score;
-Martin Guptill's highest first-class score;
-Brendon McCullum's highest test score;
-Brendon McCullum's highest first-class score;
-Brendon McCullum had the highest score by a New Zealand wicketkeeper in test matches;
-McCullum got tenth highest score by a wicketkeeper in test matches;
I could go on.....
Good recovery. The Banglas batting positively, with Vettori unsurprisingly taking the sole wicket.

Bangas break some records of their own as they avoid the follow on, and the very much in form Mahmudullah posts a ton of his own and captain Shakib just misses out.
Bad light has stopped play.
Mahmudullah is awesome. Thank god he didn't get left stranded again.

Judging by the number of overs he bowls, he appears to be a specialist number 8 batsman. :confused:
His bowling form seems to have left him- Should shift him up and bring Naeem Islam in as fifth bowler/number eight.
Shakib was robbed of his century, his edge fell short of McCullum who claimed the catch anyway. Not the greatest sportsmanship from the Kiwis.

Not that they mind bleating when it doesn't go their way.

Fortunately for them 2 of their three best batsmen are in ATM with their other one due in next :D

We wouldn't be the only country that does that.....
Remember 2001?
The umpires should have had the brains to go upstairs. Or with UDRS in place can't they check catches?

2001? Are you talking about Australia or Sri Lanka?
I don't have any problems with bending the rules, or even unsportsmanlike behavior, as long as you wear it when it goes against you.

I don't mind if it goes against us, I call it tactics. People need to cheat/bend the rules to win, fine, as long as they're happy about winning the game that way.

I wasn't talking about you specifically.
Remember when McCullum ran Murali out while he was celebrating Sanga's ton? He was quite within the rules to do it, but was it really in the spirit of the game? I copped it because it was a little bit careless by Murali, but then you know....
Fast forward to the 2008 ODI series against England and Grant Elliott is run out while he's lying on the ground injured after colliding with Ryan Sidebottom. they were quite within the rules to make the play, and to call for it to stand, but was it in the spirit of the rules? The Kiwi's certainly didn't think so, even though they still ended up winning the game.

I was just putting in my perspective.
Murali stepped out of his ground before Chris Martin's throw had hit Baz's gloves. You'd think after 100 tests he'd know better.
The Elliott dismissal was different, though I believe if the team appeals, the batsman should be out. Sometimes you may see an opposition captain recall a batsman after such an event has happened (Strauss and Vettori did so at the Champions Trophy). Though it did make for good watching when Vettori went feral at the England balcony when we scampered through for a miracle victory, and I quote.
"Yeah, run, run, f*ck you c*nts, f*ck you c*nts."

I thoroughly enjoyed that bit myself :D
al hasan has to play a captains knock here, is easily their best batsman. Could put his name up in lights if they can somehow get out of this situation. Mahmudullah is the key, if he can bat as well as he did in the 1st innings they still have a slim chance.

Mushfiqur is also more than capable of making a contribution.
even bangladesh must have someone waiting in the wings who can perform better than ashraful. 53 tests is a lot of time to end up averaging 23 as a batsman. looking at his stats, half of them could easily be single figure scores.
wonder how they would have gone with mortaza in the side.

Unfortunately they dont, they are still a developing cricket side and really apart from a couple on the fringes, what you see right now is what you get. Bad form or a poor record overall doesnt come into the equation with bangladesh. When they have some depth of talent coming through that is when changes will be made if need be.

Bangladesh put up quite a fight and made for good watching. Happy I went home from school covered in blood :D. Well batted by Shakib. And I'm astounded that Southee took 3 wickets.
