View Full Version : Biased TV Commentators
As soon as I turned on the tellie for today's game, I was sure I detected McChin's dulcet tones along with one or two of his sidekicks/stooges.:mad:
I'm thouroughly sick of the outright BIAS these guys blatantly flaunt, so I immediately turned the sound down and turned on the NIRS description on la radio.
The NIRS guys call the game as it happens, acurately and with some genuine touches of humour and they're NOT BIASED.
I know I am biased myself, so after the game was over, I thought maybe I was being too sensitive and had over-reacted.
That's until I heard a chappie phone in the on the talkback session on NIRS, follwing their call of the Freo/Bombers game. Turns out this guy is a BOMBERS supporter, who happens to live in Brisbane.
That being the case, he had also watched the earlier live feed of the Geelong/Lions game on the tellie.
His one big gripe was HOW BIASED HE THOUGHT THE CHANNEL 9 TV COMMENTATORS HAD BEEN AGAINST THE LIONS FOR THE ENTIRE BROADCAST. It was his considered opinion that this BIAS against "interstate" teams was blatant, persistent and unprofessional. They were virtually barracking for Geelong the whole of the broadcast, according to this guy.
Seems that I have not over-reacted after all.
That's enough for me. From now on I'm turning down the TV sound and listening the the radio when we play away.
This has been bugging for for awhile. The worst one of all is Brereton. I will never listen to him call a Lions game again. His bias was confirmed in today's call when one of them said "even Dermott admits he's never seen a better midfield" Proof enough for me.
You are right ,as a unbiased supporter waiting for the mighty dockers to play one could have been forgiven (if they went paying attention ) that the Cats had won or were winning the game.
Vic bias at it's best.
Just check the ladder Eddie 5 in and Freo just poised to boot collingwood out. That will make him cry.
And the Perth-based guys who call Freo & WC games are so unbiased.

And just who out of Lyons, Dermie and Eddie follow Geelong.
It is one thing to be bias towards your own team, to actually be bias against another is just unprofessional. My respect for these gentlemen just dimminishes more with each passing day. KG and Cornesy et al in SA are as bias as towards the Crows and Port, but they always show respect to the opposition teams.
To be biased, whether for or against a team, is equally unprofessional.

Brereton has always been quite complementary of the Lions from all that I've heard him say, and it sounds no different on this occasion.
It's the even Dermott comment I was referring to.
Obviously you have a different interpretation of some of his recent calls (Collingwood and Doggies springs to mind), I'm just saying that he bugs me. You can understand Eddie's bias but I just don't get the others.

Matthew though doesnt have anything to do with the club anymore, he also gets genuinely excited for other teams when he is commentating. Eddie against any team other then Collingwood, especially Brisbane doesnt even get out of half gear. he also goes on about the confidence of our side making US seem the ones who are are arrogant.

He's STILL traumatised ( as is the whole club ) about the 2002 GF and underplays our work. But hey, we're not the underdog any more and so will not attract the natural best wishes. A bit like being a Hawks fan in the mid 80's. Who'd have thought ?

I try not to read too much into things. At the end of the day, I don't care who people show a bias towards, as long as their INSIGHTS into the game (the players, how the game is being played, etc.) are interesting and accurate.
It's human nature, in Australian society at least, to have a sentimental attachment to the underdog. Perhaps this accounts for some of the perceived "barracking" for teams against the Lions.

Well I said Matty Cambell in relation to Brissy because I have heard him commentating their games alot. So go figure in relation to your comment about 'B' grade games.
I just wish Garry Lyon would read his team sheets properly. If he calls Ash McGrath "Corey" (and/or "Son") again I'm gonna scream ...
Remember though that he (Corey McGrath) does have to learn what it takes to play with the big boys (son).
Yeah, that 'son' pi$$ed me off, every time, too!
How can an ex-player dictate just what is needed to be a premiership player (son), when he never played in a GF himself.

Yeah, I know ;) I just assumed G. Lyon would have blocked out all memory of a 96 point GF flogging! :D
