Well it's great news for one that it looks like it's actually happening, and secondly I am encouraged we're getting a decent movie maker/director to help oversee the project after the unmitigated turkey that was Superman Returns ..

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=63139

In possibly one of the biggest superhero movie shockers since the last one--when was the Spider-Man reboot, three weeks ago?--Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that The Dark Knight and Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan has been assigned the potentially thankless task of being the latest filmmaker assigned by Warner Bros. to try to save the "Superman" franchise, in this case in a mentoring capacity to figure out the best way to proceed.

Director Bryan Singer helmed the last installment Superman Returns three and a half years ago, which grossed $391 million worldwide, but wasn't seen as a hit due to its reported $270 million production budget. (Remember that the studio doesn't get 100% of those theatrical grosses.)

Since then, various names have been mentioned as possible candidates to get Superman back to the screen, most vocally comic book creator Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass), but nothing had been confirmed or definite.

Who would you want to play Superman though ??? I am sure as hell don't want Brandon Routh back ... A lot of people want Sam Worthington, but I don't think he'll be the choice Warner Bros would want ...

Also I should point out, this is not going to be a 'reboot' or 'sequel/prequel' to any of the previous Superman films, but a complete new franchise (similar to how the Batman films directed by Nolan have no relation to the awful Batman films of the 90's or other previous Batman mythology)

I thought Routh was decent TBH. It was just a really average plot.

I don't see why they can't cast Tom Welling (Smallville) for the Superman role.

I think it makes sense that Warner Bros want to make it a completely new franchise, disassociated with any other previous Superman films and TV series ...

Hopefully Gilbert Gottfried gets cast as Superman

I think super man is a boring chacter.... he's virtually indestrucable, is a super good guy hes alter ego i a nerd with no personal flaws etc etc, where as batman is haunted by parents death, spider man just a agsty-kid, and iron man billionaire alcoholic, their flawed characters that directors and writiers can exploit to make interesting stories with..

And yet Superman is just as popular as Batman

Routh would have to be the most wooden actor I have ever seen. Please don't bring him back. My fav Superman movie was the one where Richard Prior gives him pseudo kryptonite and we get bad superman..that was cool. But anyway I agree that Superman played too straight like in Superman Returns is the wrong approach. Because Superman is such a straight up guy, the other characters really need to be different to help create a contrast. It is the villains and characters like Lois & Jimmy that need to contrast with Superman/Kent to make the film interesting. That's why the early ones worked so well.

They need the Superman march in it though, best music theme ever :D.

I think it sucks, the character has been lost in the massive wave of superheros in comic turned movies. Superman has been my #1 favorite comic book hero and always will be, i see the critisism (how he is hard to write for and make interesting to the general public, plus the "truth justice and the American way" deal not being as relevant as it used to be argument) - but that IS the Superman way.

You don't need to write up ways that use Superman, but feature all elements that make Batman, Spider-man, X-Men work.

I didn't mind Superman Returns, i saw it multiple times at the cinema... i think that's what stuffed me up. I watched it the full way through the first time on dvd, i havn't really been able to watch it properly since (always have to stop 2-3 times before gradually finishing the film). The problem there was using the Donner created Superman universe, but the way the film was presented... it was like they were trying to capture the same audience who enjoyed Spider-man.

I'd love to see a superman movie with him going toe to toe with Doomsday or Darkseid. You could make it real dark and interesting.

That's not true though, that's a misconception people have - like those who thought the Joker was a clown and not an anarchy driven sociopath.

Superman has plenty of flaws and internal struggles/demons, it's just the film makers have ignored them.

If they want to save the Superman movie franchise, it's simple - make a trilogy based on this;

Incredibly good storyline, and shows what Superman is made of, would make an awesome movie.

Nolan's talents are wasted on action hero films... stop wasting his valuable time on a flogged to death comic book franchise and get him back to making top shelf films like Memento and The Prestige.

I can appreciate what Nolan did with BB and TDK and previously what Raimi did with Spiderman 1 and 2, but I resent the fact that the success of those films has prompted studios to green light so many comic book related projects, if it hasn't reached the point of overkill it will soon enough. There is even a Spidey reboot in the works for a 2012 release with a new cast, director and I presume origin story, is it really necesarry when the body of the previous franchise isn't even cold yet?

I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think Superman falls into that category; I'd say thats definitely applicable to things like CatWoman and DareDevil; relatively minor comic book characters that lazy Hollywood flamers tried to capitalise on.

Yes those were crap, but then you had unexpected gems like Ron Pearlman as Hellboy ...

The two Hellboy films were pretty damn good if you ask me, although I prefered the first one slightly to the 2nd one.

I'm not sure that Warners know what to do with Superman. I loved reading Kevin Smith's (Clerks, Zac and Miri director) dealings with the exec producer over the scripts he was asked to write (late 90's early 00's). Exec producer wanted a Superman that didn''t fly, didn't wear a cape and fought a giant spider!

Smith ended getting moved on after telling the EP's bosses that the idea was rubbish. They agreed with him and ended up getting Tim Burton, who in turn, was passed over for Bryan Singer.

whatever happened to the proposed Superman v Batman movie?

The next one better be better than Superman Returns which was an absolute letdown, especially after it had one of the best trailers ever.

I was reading about the lead up to Superman returns just the other day - which was almost two decades or so in the making after Superman 4. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_%28film_series%29#Proposals_for_fifth_film -
I like the idea of a darker Superman. Returns was too family friendly which added to its boringness. I love the idea of a batman and Superman movie together like the above poster but that doesn't look like it has a chance of happening atm.
