The Lions Reserves' barnstorming start to 2003 continued at Redland on Saturday, although the 109-point win was overshadowed by the report of two players.
The in-form Shane Morrison, the most obvious replacement for seniors star Jonathan Brown if scans of Brown’s face reveal any serious damage tomorrow, was reported on a striking charge.
Rugged tagger-defender Kevin Tandogac was also booked on a misconduct charge for allegedly headbutting Redland’s Tim Harders.
Morrison booted three goals and was prominent in the 27-18-180 to 11-5-71 victory, with 2001 premiership player Robbie Copeland one of the side’s strongest performers.
While Copeland was his typical hard-running, hard-working self, best afield honours were reserved for birthday boy Troy Selwood.
The former Bendigo youngster has been brilliant over the last month and he celebrated his 19th birthday on Friday by gearing up for a top effort on Saturday.
Twin brother Adam has been prominent for West Coast Eagles feeder club East Perth, and both the Lions and Eagles appear to have players of the future in the young duo.
Despite missing Richard Hadley, who has shin stress fractures and will miss another 3-4 weeks, and the skilful Joel Macdonald, the Lions were far too strong all over the ground.
Aaron Shattock, Daniel Pratt and Luke Weller made the most of their opportunities around goal with four each, will the ever-improving Jason Gram has rivalled Selwood and Weller with a stellar last month.
Gram used his speed and stamina to great affect off half-back and has taken a step up in his second year on the Lions list.
Blake Caracella played the first half before flying south to act as an emergency for the senior game at Geelong.
Redland are badly missing retired big key forwards Paul O’Brien and Dion Scott, and Grogan Medallist Brad Jones. As was the case when the two sides met in the pre-season, former Lions and Geelong Rookie List player Derek Wirth was by far the Bombers’ most accomplished player for the home team.
