Folks,
It has just been confirmed that the Fitzroy Reds (who play in the old Fitzroy strip in the VAFA amatuer comp) will play West Brunswick (who play in the Collingwood strip) will play the curtain raiser to the Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood game at the MCG on August 9th.
This is an important all round initiative for a number of reasons:
a) for us Melbourne based Lions fans, the Reds are the equivalent of the Brissie Lions reserves - similar to how you Brissie based folk might go and see the Ressies when the Seniors are playing out of town, many Melbourne based fans go see the Reds play when the Lions are playing out of town. Theres a strong connection to the Maroon and Blue and Gold.
b) this may give a few old Roys fans who haven't yet jumped onto the Lions an opportunity to come along and put the toes back in the AFL water. More members next year perhaps
c) the AFL supporting grass roots footy. Sheesh thats a first!
d) I know the debate as to wearing old guernseys (Bears and Roys) on special occasions has been waged here over the years. This is an opportunity for the old Fitzroy guernsey to be worn by a team on a Bris Lions match day, without the AFL Lions having to wear it.
e) this initiative is a result of co-operation between the Fitzroy Reds, West Brunnie, the VAFA, presidents of all VAFA clubs in the same division as the Fitzroy Reds, the AFL, Collingwood, and the mighty mighty Brisbane Lions. Getting that amount of organisations to agree on something new is an acheivement. Full bloody marks to everyone.
Good for footy I be reckoning.
