The Ashes preparation for England's defence of the urn in so many ways begins on the dustbowls of Bangladesh, who are in action yet again in tests and ODI's when a year ago they were struggling to even host the associates. No T20 matches for this tour (England played 2 against Pakistan in the Emirates, series was split after the Irishman Eoin Morgan scored 67 in 51 in game 1 only for Abdul Razzaq to dominate game 2 with bat and ball), so it's a run of the mill 3 ODI's before 2 Test matches.
SCHEDULE
1st ODI: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, 28 February
2nd ODI: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, 2 March
3rd ODI: Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong, 5 March
TOUR MATCH: vs Bangladesh A, MA Aziz Stadium, Chittagong , 7-9 March
1st TEST: Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong, 12-16 March
2nd TEST: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, 20-24 March
Looking at the squads and with no information on the home side apart from Mashrafe Mortaza heading back from Australia for rehab on his troublesome knee (he did play in the 2nd warm-up 50 over game) we will look at the visitors. It's been well documented that Andrew Strauss is rested from the whole tour, but he is joined by Jimmy Anderson who is getting his chronic right knee problem looked at with a view to be fit for the World T20 following this tour. Alastair Cook is a surprise choice as skipper for both ODI's and Tests given that he's never really secured a spot in the coloured clothing sides in the past and that Paul Collingwood lead the team in Dubai.
Into the ODI squad actually comes an ENGLISHMAN (which may shock many!) in Kent off spinner James Tredwell, Huddersfield born Yorkshire paceman Ajmal Shahzad and recently added from the production line of South African players in the English blue, Somerset batsman Craig Kieswetter. The test squad at this stage amongst other changes has the exclusion of Kieswetter and the substitution of Joe Denly for the Hampshire opener Michael Carberry who should make a debut alongside the new skipper when the tests begin.
England have had 2 warm-up fixtures over 50 overs against a Board XI in Futullah and won them both. Game 1 saw Kieswetter belt 143 off 123 and Collingwood 109 off 74 with Swann getting 4 wickets. Game 2 was reduced to 37 overs with the bowlers keeping it tight and Cook and Prior who was batting at 3 getting 50's.
Hopefully more information on the Bangladesh side to come

BCB Media ReleaseBangladesh ODI Squad namedThe National Selectors have named the following players for the three-match ODI Series against England starting Sunday (28 February):Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Mushfiqur Rahim (Vice Captain/Wicketkeeper), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Zunaed Siddique, Aftab Ahmed Chowdhury, Mahmud Ullah, Naeem Islam, Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Md. Sohrawordhi. The notable absentee from the team is experienced batsman Mohammad Ashraful. "Ashraful himself wanted a break and we also felt that the pressure on him had increased to the extent that his confidence was suffering. We believe that a gap from international cricket would be beneficial for him and he will come back strongly soon and do justice to his calibre," said Chairman of Selectors Rafiqul Alam. Alam said the inclusion of uncapped all-rounder Md. Sohrawordhi adds depth to the team. "He is a very capable cricketer and is in the team as a specialist left-arm spinner. He can also be a more than handy batsman in the middle and lower order and he is a top fielder. He is someone who has progressed step by step through the development system and has been a consistent performer at Academy and A Team levels over the years."Fast bowler Masrafe Bin Mortaza returns to the side after recuperating for nearly seven months following a knee surgery. "He has played in the practice match today (against England) and he has also been declared fit by his doctor. Someone like Mortaza has got nothing to prove regarding his ability and we have confidence in him. He is a big match player," said Alam. The chairman of selectors said that pacers Nazmul Hossain and Shahadat Hossain, who had been in the squad that toured New Zealand recently, were left out because of team combination while batsman Roqibul Hassan was dropped for poor form. Hopefully he comes back bigger and better than ever. He has so much talent but wastes it on stupid shots.
Hope Carberry gets about 500 runs this series. Resting a captain in test cricket...

do you think ponting would take a break away from the game during a test series even though the next 12 months will be hectic. highly doubtfull

No different to Chappell not going overseas.
Another South African in the England Cricket team. How many more can they fix in there you reckon?
260 by Bangladesh.
Bowl well in the first 10 and they should topple the Poms- especially on a low, slow, spinning pitch.
Ashraful is the biggest phony to play the game. Plays 2 blinders consecutively against Australia and England back in 2005..... then is chosen for every match for the next 4 years despite averaging less than 15!
Best decision the Bangladesh selectors could have made.

What shits me about it is everytime you read about him, it's "Asrhaful is widely regarded as one of the most talented players in the game", which is ordinary because talent shouldn't just encompass an ability to a hit a ball.

England on the road to a whitewash, should make 300 from here, only chance Bangas have is if Iqbal tons up again even then he'll need some fair support.

Bangladesh fell short of 45 runs in pursuit of 285. So, England seal a 3-0 series whitewash over Bangladesh. They are yet to win a match against England in ODI's.

Tour match action - Michael Carberry's 0/78 off 4 overs weren't the worst bowling figures, that goes to Alistair Cook who conceded 33 more off 1 more over - 0/111 off 5. They declared after those 9 overs.
In slightly better news, Trott made a ton, Tredwell took 6 in the first innings and Finn finished up with 3/33 from 18 overs for the match. Nobody else took a 2-fer and only Prior passed 50.
Ashraful made 1 and 30 and has been dropped from the test squad in favour of Raqibul Hasan who made a ton and a 50. The squad is:
Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, Aftab Ahmed, Raqibul Hasan, *Shakib Al Hasan, +Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Enamul Haque jnr, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain

Scratch that....Raqibul has retired from all forms of cricket it seems.

Must be getting career advice from Umar Akmal. Another setback for Bangladesh cricket

England dominated the first day.
Cook finished the day on 158*
Pietersen was bowled for 99
3/374.
Great ton by Cook, but the ball that got KP one short was a blinder. England should romp in, give it another 2 sessions and they will be set

Cook made 173

Bell is currently 82* to go with KP's 99.
They're scoring at 4.32 rpo...

No follow on after Mushfiqir Rahim scored 70. 1/76 England leading by 379. Think they'll go hell for leather and see if Bangladesh can bat out 2 days (which is about 99% certain not to happen).
Such a shame Bangladesh doesn't have a top order. Imrul Kayes contiunes to keep his crown as worst opener ever.

434 run lead into day 4, will be a struggle, wouldnt suprise me if the only bat for an hour or so and have 5 sessions at the Bangers, which they will only need maybe 2 or 3 at best

England: 6-599d. & 7-209d.
Bangladesh: 296 & 2-45
Lunch Day 4: Bangladesh require another 468 runs to win with 8 wickets remaining.

Even if they don't get the draw here, this innings has been a fair effort.

They didn't, lost by 181 runs despite Junaid Siddique's maiden ton and a 95 from keeper Mushfiqir Rahim. 10 poles for Swann gets him MOM.
tamim 50 from 34, heart in mouth stuff. hopefully goes on with it so guys like al hasan, mahmudullah and rahim can pile it on rather than dig them out......
Anyone else watching this? Iqbal going nuts, drinks in the first session he has 74 from 48 and the bangas are 95/1 from just 14 overs
BA 1/95 at drinks, crazy stuff. tamim on 74 from 48.
What is it about Bangladesh and their occassional spurts of delirium with the bat anyway? Tamim's absolutely blasting them.
tamim out for 85, feck. 2/119 after 22.1 overs
bangers batting like nz. 8 and 10 bats both with 40's, 9th wicket partnership of 67. must be driving england mad. if you let bangladesh get over 350 you probably haven't bowled very well at all. fun stuff.
shafiul islam 50 from 47 balls. good chance of 400 now.
now the last pair have gotten stuck in, partner ship of 30 so far. 9/418.
All of them through 3rd man

Shakib Al Hasan.
52 overs, 24 maidens, 4/89
Might be time to find my Shakib thread. Such a gun.

shakib bowled 66 overs in the end. 4 for 124
a little bit overbowled? dont you think?
but hes got a handy ally bowling from the other end in the form of abdur razzak.
um... any idea whats happened to shahadat hossain?
and why isnt mashrafe playing? hes their best bowler, probably bangladesh's answer to wasim akram - so far in their fledgling history

and where is shahadat hossain?
hes erratic but entertaining
Update: 191 run lead to the deshis a couple of sessions to go...
they are a much more competitive unit at home the deshis.
i want them to win to show up the arrogance of the english
if the captain gets to his century (20 runs from now), theres no way they can lose this match, they probably already have enough runs to not lose this match. also another factor to consider is the run rate, it is not all that quick throughout the whole match...
FFFFFUUUUU - Razzak out.
9/275 at lunch. Shakib the Great 86*. Lead of 198.
lose a wicket last over before lunch, 9 down, such a shame.
ideally any england chase would be at 4+ runs an over. say 210 from 52. gives a chance to have the spinners get stuck in. bearing in mind that england have treacle trott opening (unless they switch for quick runs)

209 off 54 overs. Could be interesting.
Doubt it though. 96 is like 100 for Shakib. Shakib to open the bowling imo
need pietersen out. trott out when he was ticking it along moreso than cook... still a tough ask to keep them away from the total.
leaked a few too many runs in the last 5-10 overs to make a contest of this. need some wickets otherwise there'll be some broken bangladesh hearts.
130 runs in 34 overs. Can pretty much call it sadly :(

A look at the only time Australia have played Bangladesh over there shows that they do not just roll over on home soil.

It's fair to say that an Australian side with Ponting, Hayden, Clarke, Gilchrist, Hussey, Warne, Gillespie, Lee and MacGill was a fairly strong side. Yet Bangladesh scored over 400 in the first innings of the first test, failed in the second and then still had Australia under pressure in their chase. Australia by 3 wickets !

This England side was very inexperienced and did not get it all their own way. The slow wickets were not conducive to blasting teams out or scoring at rapid rates as the Aussies found out 4 years earlier. Good performance from England all round and a lot of lessons learnt for both sides.
