Ararat Eagles got home against Avoca yesterday, and this got me thinking ... was that their first win in this league? How long has they're losing streak been?
And how much lower can Avoca (the most populous town in the league, apart from Ararat who supply two other teams in other leagues), sink?

Avoca have recently put a proposal to the Danish AFL to set up a sister-club arrangement (mentioning 'we are a town of many vinyards looking for casual workers') saying they'd love to see some Danes or Swedes come down to play some footy.
The interest created has worked alright for Power House (who have a Danish scholarship player each year) as far as attracting new Aussies to the club goes as well. Panton Hill have also put out offers to the USAFL looking for Americans to hone their skills on suburban footy.
The message from Avoca is on the DAFL messageboard if anyone's interested.

What a bloody good idea, Richo. I can't believe that I didn't come accross it earlier, because Murchison has quite a few orchards and tomato fields that are always looking for workers early in the football season, and since that won't allow us to play weekend releasers from the Dhurringile Prison,(after one of the inmates rooted one of the players girlfriends), and considering that we're always short of players, this might just work.
I'm going to try to do the same thing hopefully with a club in the DAFL, or even in Ireland (we played two Irish backpackers last Saturday, before they were going to Sydney, and they played well), finding temporary work will be easy, but all the rest of the planning will be difficult, but hard problems sometimes require unorthodox solutions.

Or the USA, or Canada, or Germany - just a few places where you'll find blokes playing footy who'd love a game in Australia and a little cash in hand holiday work.....
Panton Hill's recruiting efforts for guys from the states created a bit of interest, particularly as they offered to organise employment.
On the topic of day release prisoners - Sale City used to use a few of them to make up numbers before the Sale prison was replaced by the new big private klink a few ks out of town, wonder if that had anything to do with why they ended up folding!

Could be Richo could be!
Cadell in the Mid Murray FA in SA had the same problem. At one stage the Training Centre had a seperate team (back in 1970's) but Cadell had to merge with Morgan to stay alive after the state government wouldn't release CTC inmates to play.
To answer Kev's original question - the answer is "NO!"
May 5, 2001 - Ararat Eagles 28.23 (191) d Landsborough 4.8 (32)
I didn't look for any others.

Ay? I didn't know that Dookie College and Glenormiston College were part of the correctional service department!! You sure about that, Kev?

I wasn't talking about that element of it hehe ... I just meant how they had to be absorbed by the nearby localities over time!

Or some of the stranger people you find up around Beechworth and Stanley, who I suspect have more than a passing aquaintance with the former asylum.....
(Nice area though - mountains aren't really mountains without a few odd people living there).
