Eden Park, Auckland
10am AEDT Saturday March 6
Not a good trip to the South Island for the Aussies, Tim Nielsen might be wishing he took up that sheep offer at the airport, because they didn't have a lot of success down there. Back up north now for a couple of games in Auckland separated by one down the road in Hamilton. A day game that starts at midday, but that's probably going to be early enough to get a result that might not be possible in a day nighter, with late rain forecast. The Kiwis chased down 336 last time they met the Aussies here, and the chasing side has won pretty comfortably in the 3 games since, with the highest score of 275 coming in a game washed out in the 11th over of the chase.
The Kiwis have lost Jacob Oram to injury but that just makes the decision of who makes way for the skipper easy. Michael Mason's been called up but with four plus Vettori and Styris that's only in case Bond trips over his shoelaces, which is about even money considering he's made it through 3 games without breaking down. Not much hope for big McCullum either.
The ICC's chief referee has decided that a bowler with a recent record headbutting a batsman is only worth a fine of two-thirds of the maximum fine and none of the suspension, so the Aussies don't have to make a change, and after an ordinary home summer Johnson had a goodish game with bat and ball in Napier. Some talk the Australian management might make the decision to ban him themselves, which would open the door for Clint McKay. Adam Voges only chances are Clarke's back and somebody looking for a scapegoat - who would be James Hopes.

It'll be interesting to see what will happen if either Ricky Ponting or Daniel Vettori wins the toss tomorrow. Remember, Eden Park in Auckland, like most grounds in NZ is a short ground, and it is much harder to defend a total if you're fielding second, because the opposition can chase down a score very quickly.

True. But some NZ tracks really die in the second innings and the pace & bounce go.
Aussie like batting first and NZ like batting second..I think that will continue
Allan Border (who is part of SKY NZ's commentary team) won't have happy memories of Eden Park-in ODI level at least. It was there in 1992 in the opening match of the 1992 World Cup that Australia lost, which set them on the back foot and the Aussies never recovered after that throughout that World Cup. Martin Crowe got a 100 and the Kiwis stunned the Australian batsmen by having Dipak Patel open the bowling. Australia missed out on the finals, while NZ made the semi final only to lose to eventual champions Pakistan.

bat first and put a decent total on, the other nights score wasn't even close to what it should have been. brett lee has some good memories of this ground. he bowled a ripping spell in an odi 5 years ago that set australia on it's way to winning that series 5 blot. i reckon australia will bounce back in this game

Think NZ have a real to shot at making it two nothing here, as the Australian team looks a little rattled at the moment.

South Island??
Napier is in the North Island. Of the three games played so far only one was played in the South Island (Christchurch).
I'm picking the Aussies to hit back and hit back hard. They certainly need to, trying come back from 2 nil down in a 5 match series would be a huge ask.
Word on the street is that Dan Vettori is still struggling with his neck injury and may not play (N. McCullum would take his place). That would be a huge bonus for the Aussies. Not only is he the number 1 ranked ODI bowler in the world, but the Eden Park pitches suit his style of bowling.
Let's hope it's another close, exciting game! :)

Australia have lost the last 5 ODIs they have played in NZ and they batted first every time

I'd be chasing, don't want to be setting totals on these pitches as the Kiwis have chased well over 300 before.
Ponting won't bowl if he wins the toss.

6 Mar 2010, 07:42
Australia are batting again, Vettori is back for Oram, but Taylor is out and Hopkins comes into the side
For the Kiwis, Vettori is playing, but Taylor is not. Hopkins comes in for Taylor and will keep wicket because McCullum has a bad back. The Kiwis have the most injury prone players in the history of cricket. That's now 5 first choice players who are out with injury!!
Aussies won the toss and are batting.

it's a tough pitch to bat on at the moment
Haddin starting to open up

Good start, 0/64 off 13, Vettori's overs will tell a lot here.
260 + needed.
Watto out, was looking good as well
Is the crowd booing Punter? Dirty ****ing kiwis.

3 cheers for Ricky Ponting, he just played the DUMBEST shot he has ever played, 4th ball of Vettori and he gives his wicket away.
Bye Bye Ricky, time to concentrate on Test Cricket please.:thumbsd:

haddin has really picked up the pace and i reckon clarke will go with him
Bat sensibly, and 300+ is well and truly on the cards for us. We'll need every bit of them as well. Some really small boundaries at Eden Park.

When they stick they stick.
Another batsmen gets a start and doesn't go on with it.

10 of those matches are against Pakistan and the Windies, his form has been almost woeful in one day cricket outside of those 10 practice matches.
I love Ricky as much as the next bloke, but he is getting too inconsistent to play every one dayer.
Oh yeah, and sorry for having an opinion, forgot I'm not allowed to have one on a public forum.:p
You can have an opinion, your opinion can also be criticised by people who disagree with it. Pretty simple really.
King Elvis
6 Mar 2010, 09:45
You're allowed an opinion, is he not allowed one in response? :p
Stupid cricket by both Punter & Clarke; our Captain and VC throw their wickets away within an over of losing their partner?
11 from 26 from Clarke, selfish batting, again.

I said think before you type. At least look up the ****ing statistics. He averaged 72 against England in the 7 match ODI series last year, was PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT in the Champions Trophy and averaged 44 away against India. How on earth is that woeful?
270 would be a good score from here, but not sure it would be enough. taylor and oram are handy outs. bit insipid after the opening pair left. from 3/114 after 22.3 overs, to 4/134 after 30 overs. that's shit, not even 3 an over.

Real shame Bond has had so many injuries, the bloke is a deadset star; if he'd had better luck, he'd be head to head with Steyn as the best quick in the world.

271 +/- 10 not enough.
does anyone else think the team is programed to score between 270-280 on small grounds, and 240-250 on bigger ones?
its like the 80s, 220 is a great score. 270 is todays 220
peternorth
6 Mar 2010, 11:32
yep, 273.
Here is a novel idea. If your playing Hauritz.... bowl him.

Nah they can and do make bigger scores then that. Team just gets too easily bogged down in the middle overs if they lose some quick wickets, on occasions
Would have to be a pretty ordinary batting display to not chase this one down
Plugger35
6 Mar 2010, 11:51
Barely a par score on that ground you would think.
NZ would probably be favourites, especially if McCullum can get them off to a flyer.
Can't see this score being enough against the Kiwi's. We'll have to bowl and field out of our skins to level the series 1-1.

Michael Clarke says hi! He's the reason every time we get bogged down. He should be batting at number 6.

Cameron White has been known to be quite a slow starter.
Nice catch from Haddin

That total suddenly looks a lot tougher without him there.

Pearler of a catch to Haddin - the Aussies were pretty happy to see the back of McCullum
On a side note, this should be our permanent ODI uniform

6 Mar 2010, 14:39
I hate when bowling sides do this, giving the batting side a "free" 10 overs to score 4-5 a over.
Bring back Bollinger, we don't want him bowling at the death, bowl him now.

6 Mar 2010, 14:45

6 Mar 2010, 15:22
Pontings great strategy on show again.
We have to bowl em out to win, and he brings Hauritz on.
Put Johnson on, get 2 wickets and get the number 11 in, then see how the Powerplay goes.
