I've never heard any of their stuff but if I was to come up with a definitive list of their best 10 hard rockin' songs what would they be?
Bit slow getting on the Dream Theatre bandwagon I know. :o
Dream Theater are a band who, when I listen to them, tend to blend all their songs on any particular album into one continuously-themed sound. I therefore don't notice individual songs very much, more inclined to take notice of the sound of an entire album.
I've got five of their albums :
- Images and Words (1992)
- A Change of Seasons (1995)
- Falling Into Infinity (1997)
- Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002)
and one other which I can't remember the name of.
A Change of Seasons is an album of covers, and Six Degrees... is a double CD, the second CD consists of only one songs which goes for 42 minutes!
Disc 1 is probably my favourite Dream Theater work, especially the opening track The Glass Prison. If you like Tool, you will either love or hate track 4, The Great Debate, because it completely rips off the sound and feel from Tool's Aenima CD, yet sounds so much like Tool that you probably can't hate the sound itself.
Of the other albums, Images And Words is the best.

Images and Words is their best IMO - strong 'rock' tracks, but with awesome technicality (but not overbearing like yngwie or that kind of stuff).
Great great muso's.
Some of their more 'ballady' stuff ****s me, but they do some heavy stuff too.
'Awake' was also pretty good - a little more teched out, so I guess it depends what you're into.

I have 'sampled' 2 of Dream Theatres songs from KaazaLite - "Fatal Tragedy" & "Metropolis 2000" just random selections and I like what I hear.

I'm no huge Tool fan, but find their work very listenable... I thought "The Great Debate" was an exact replica of the sound Tool have built over the last 10 years.
That particular song is so much of a replica, you'd either find it a revelation as the song Tool never did, or be insulted on Tool's behalf, that someone could copy a sound to the letter and get away with it!
I'm still in between, as they copy a sound and not any specific song, so there's no real copyright issue. Download the song (good song regardless of issues) and decide for yourself.
Pull Me Under is my favourite song of theirs. I really like Misunderstood off the latest album too.
Best albums for me are Awake, Images and Words, and Metropolis Part 2.
DT are pretty good.
Nice sound that is almost power-metal, but isn't.
If I had to think of a genre name, it would be, "up n at em metal".
Gets ya going in the mornings.

Ya reckon? For me it's the opposite... there's no energy coming out of those speakers because to me they are a very precise, robotic and technical band... musically flawless, but there's no emotion or feeling that jumps out at me. Very hard to sit through an hour or so of their work, which is probably another reason why songs don't stick in my mind as happens with other music.

I love the clean sound.
I agree I couldn't sit through an hour of it, just the odd song every now and then.
