View Full Version : How safe is Justin Langers spot?

I dont know how Justin's form whilst he was playing in the England league, but his form for Western Australia has been a pair (0,0) in the game against Queensland and a second ball duck against South Australia in the 1 dayers. Although I read he made 61 not out playing in the local suburban competition during the weekend.
Does everyone think the selectors would be concerned at all and make changes for the 1st test or go with the last test match side and if he doesn't perform well make changes for the 2nd test?

Justin Langer will be safe for the first 2 tests at least. If he doesn't perform in those 2 i would say that either Simon Katich, Andrew Symonds or Martin Love will take his place.

Langers has become the 'grunt' in the middle order thats been missing since the days of Boonie and Border.
He is as safe as houses.
Langer is safe.If Mark Waugh can stay in the side then anyone can
The only thing that could go against Langer is thats he's not from NSW.The NSW mafia [i.e Test Selectors] might want to get Higgs in the side as a second spinner/batsman.

justin langer is safe, steve waugh has come out and said that he rates langer as the best batsman in the world, now thats a big wrap, especially from the captain
a pair in the wa game means nothing, the tests are still a while away and he had terrific form in england, were he was near the top of the averages
if langer was to go i think ponting would move to 3 and martyn would stay at number 6
i think the next change will be mark waugh who will retire, his position will be taken by martyn or katitch, but expect langer to be at number 3 for a long time to come
I agree. Langer is safe.
His international form over the last 12 months has been outstanding.

I agree Grendel, he is as safe as houses. He is the perfect type for the Aussie no 3 spot, kind of like Boonie.
If his form last summer can't keep him in the no 3 spot for at least a few years, then i dont know what will. He probably does need a few runs before the 1st Test to feel confortable in the spot again.

he is what the Australian side has been sorely lacking at Number 3 since Boonie retired.
Remember his form from last summer ? - esp 2nd Test v Pakistan at Hobart ?
The Australian selectors would be bonkers to drop him. The only thing that might count against him is he is from the wrong state, but the selectors consider Western Australians to be honourary NSWelshmen anyway ! http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/wink.gif
Langer is as safe as houses. He has been the most successful no.3 since Boonie, and he is poised to end up with a better record than him. He's Autralias little nugget, besides S. Waugh of course - who is in a class of his own - and how people could even think about dropping him is wrong.

Langer wont get dropped for a while.
He is getting runs and that is all that matters, really.
A tradionalist would be opposed to have Langer in the team, because Langer has a shocking technique. He is overbalance, stodgy, and doesn't move his feet well.
But at the end of the day, he manages to stay in and get some runs, which is the most important thing.

I reckon if anyone's going to nick his spot it should be Brad Hodge.
He's been consistantly scoring runs for the Vics ever since he joined, and has started the current season well.
Hodge is nowhere near taking Langers spot. He has been a perennial underachiever (considering his undoubted talent), and has not been making many runs when you compare him to Lehmann, Martyn, Hussey & Bevan, for instance. His average is well below what it SHOULD be. I think he COULD be a fantastic player, but hes not real consistent. Sure, he looks good at the moment, but until he can score heavily over the course of a full season, he will never be at the front of the queue.

tom that was a joke right???
sure hodge has a great deal of talent, enough to be in the aussie side
but consistantly making runs, come on, that has been his greatest downfall, he has been in and out of the vics side for the past few season because he hasnt consistantly made runs
if anyone is to take langers spot then it will be ponting, whether langer is then dropped to six or someone like martyn, symonds or lehman gets another crack who knows
but langer is safe for the time being

Langer is safe.
In the test series last year he scored some of the biggest scores of the summer. I think he is pretty consistent and will stay in the side for a long time.

Langer's as gritty as they come. An attribute imperative for a first drop batsmen. Don't think his spot's in danger at all. I mean who's capable of taking his spot if it's in danger anyway? Besides, his summer last year was far too impressive to just disregard, based on a few poor innings so far this year.
Sure his opening to the domestic season has been average, but I can tell you he made an impressive 45 against the windies today...and that's who he has to make the runs against, isn't it?
Anyone who has Optus, can watch him tommorow in the 2nd innings against the windies.
Langer is safe..Steve Waugh loves him and would adopt him if he could. As for his bullshit about langer being the best in the world a bit of PR for his aussie teammate..he wouldnt be in the same league as Tendulkar. The Windies are ordinary.. without Ambrose they have no firepower which means langer will score plenty when the tests start.Brad Hodge looks good because the Vics are ordinary.I agree with walshy..Ponting would be the next No3..Martyn and Bevan are both duds at test level, and Symonds is just a one day player like Ian Harvey.Katich or Hussey would be my choices.Mark waugh is also safe..the NSW mafia run cricket in Aus..Taylor was out of form for two years..never looked like being dropped.

Mark Waugh is definately safe. Dispite all the alligations and media hype he's been in excellent form with New South Wales this season!

Safe as houses. The pressure he was under at the start of last summer was intense, I for one wasn't convinced that Langer had the technique to hold the no.3 spot. The test in Hobart when he won the game, and subsequently the series, has turned me around. (Gilly got the runs but Langers innings won the test). Aussie no.3 batsmen need to be as hard as nails. Ian Chappell and Boon are the most fondly remembered because they were tough and didn't give their wicket away. Langer is in the same mould as these two.
