Having got an interest after seeing some of John Woo's, as well as Jet Li's "hollywood" work, and chow yun fat in the replacement killers. I am looking to watch some Hong Kong action movies, not the jakie chan chop suey movies more so the gangster/shoot'em up type. i was wonder if some could point me towards some of the best of this genre

I also read somehwere the Tarantino based Reseviour Dogs (one of my fav movies) off of a Honky movie, any one read or know which movie this is.

Reservoir Dogs is heavily influenced by City On Fire.

All the Chow Yun Fat Hong Kong movies from the 80's and 90's are awesome.

Look for any Hong Kong movies from the 80's and 90's directed by John Woo, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark. Woo and Lam are gangster movies, Hark is mainly martial arts with Jet Li but he's done a few gangster movies as well.

Off the top of my head the gangster essentials would have to be:
- City On Fire (Ringo Lam)
- The Killer (John Woo)
- Hard Boiled (John Woo)
- A Better Tomorrow trilogy (first 2 by John Woo, 3rd by Tsui Hark. Part 2 is legendary)
- Once A Thief (John Woo)
- Prison On Fire part one and two (Ringo Lam)
- Time and Tide (Tsui Hark featuring some of the greatest shootouts / action sequences ever. There's a shootout with assassins absailing down an elevator shaft and the side of a building that's amazing.)

Yeah Chow Yun Fat is a freakin legend, the first two "A Better Tommorow" films are brilliant, number two has the best final shootout of all time. :thumbsu:

Also if you've seen and enjoyed The Departed you absolutely must watch Infernal Affairs, Andy Lau is another HK superstar.

Props to Vendrell for a very good list

Also check out "The 36th chambers of Shaolin" and "The 8 diagram pole fighter" for ridiculous martial arts movies.

Forgot about Infernal Affairs. That's a great film. I thought the 2nd one which is a prequel to be pretty decent as well. Avoid the 3rd at all costs though.

Another director I forgot about is Johnnie To whose taken the mantle as Hong Kong's best crime director in the past 10 years. He's done some classics and some crap movies as well but has made so many movies that they kind of even out.

- Breaking News is my favourite Johnnie To movie. It opens with one of the greatest tracking shots in the history of cinema.

The first edit isn't until 6:30 in the clip.

- Election parts one and two are excellent thrillers about triads.
This trailer's got no subtitles but you can get a feel for it anyway.

- Fulltime Killer is a cool movie with Andy Lau as an assassin competing with another assassin.

- PTU is a decent thriller about cops trying to find a missing gun.

Watch Jackie Chan's old movie as well as new.

The New Police Story is very good with Chan playing a serious role. It's also the first time that Chan cries in a movie.

If you want gangsters, watch
- Wo Hu
- Election
- Election 2
- Infernal Affair (All of it)

If you want ancient China films:
- Battle of Red Cliff (Not the Western edited Version)
- Legend of Fong Sai Yuk.
- Fist of Legend (Bruce Lee & Jet Li versions)

Jackie Chans Battle Creek Brawl is worth a look for his Buster Keaton like performance. All his pre-Hollywood stuff is better. I do like Shanghai Knights/Noon.

Lau Kar-Leung's Heroes Of The East is a fantastic timeless martial arts movie. The star Gordon Liu is a Legend. The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin is another from Lau.

Ching Siu-Tung directed "A Chinese Ghost Story". Absolutely my favourite Hong Kong film.

Of course, all of Bruce Lee's films are worth a look.

House Of Flying Daggers, Hero and Curse Of The Golden Flower are great works from director Zhang Yimou. Not sure if they are all Hong Kong made films.

Doesn't matter if it is HK or not, those 3 are absolutely essential viewing!!!

Edit: Add Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The early Police Story movies are great.

As mentioned, Infernal Affairs is brilliant. Shits all over the Departed, especially with the ending.

I used to be a member at a video shop in Box Hill and they were good for all Asian movies but over the last few years I've found that all the good stuff gets a dvd release here anyway. Just about every movie mentioned in this thread is available at video ezy or jb hifi.

If you've got Foxtel then World Movies is good for Asian cinema. Keep an eye on SBS as well because they show plenty classic 80's and 90's Hong Kong movies. Just keep checking the tv guides for foxtel and sbs.

Agree, and its sequel are both really well made. Donnie Yen is masterful. Ip Man's son is the films consultant.

Bruce Lee teacher and all was Ip Man :thumbsu:

Donnie Yen is my favourite HK actor, has some ridiculous skills.

Seen Ip Man mentioned yet strangely enough no SPL (Sammo Hung ftw) which is it's equal IMO.

Nobody does crime movies better than the Chinese either, so goddamn stylish :D

Download VLC media player and run the program

File>open file

Click on the movie file you want to play

Check the use subtitle file box

Click on the srt file (or whatever format it's set in)

Sorted.

If you want to use Windows Media Centre you can google "Media Control for windows media centre"

This program lets you change subtitle synch speeds , font size display and a heap of other stuff. Handy if you dl movies with no subs at all as you can do a search on Subscene and then use any old subs format. If the synch doesn't initially match up, you can tweak it to suit. Bit of ****ing around with this program, but once it's set up and working it's excellent.

Not sure if its from Hong Kong or Korea, but a movie called memories of murder is brilliant. Based on a true story of a serial killer in a villiage near an army base in the 80's.

Memories of Murder is Korean I have it on the IQ and am looking foward to watching it!
As for Hong Kong Film aside from the martial arts films give Wong Kar Wai a go. A bit hit or miss. But Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild are among my favourites. His combination with Cinematographer Christopher Doyle has created a unique visual style where even when I don't like the movie I still appreciate the style.
Another I really like is Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996)

Rage of a Ninja is Mr Ho's best finale.
Final four minutes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Ou9gsMfp46k#t=5025s)

Seen far too many of his films.

And of course, Ninja the Final Duel. Masterpiece starring the black monk from Harlem and the Water Spider Assault team.

The final fight scene in Drunken Master II is worthy of it being called the best martial arts movie ever.
