My shortlist consists of Brett Deledio, Trent Cotchin, Chris Newman, Mitch Morton, Ben Cousins and Nathan Foley.
While Mitch Morton is a gem, I think we've got that area covered with Mark Williams and Angus Monfries. Ben Cousins rules himself out due to his age, unfortunately. I'm a big fan of Foley, but he seems to have stagnated over the last year or two, so he's out. Trent Cotchin, while a potential superstar, is behind Brett Deledio for mine, and - like our very own high picks Gumbleton & Myers - has been very injury-prone during his short career. Chris Newman's a great backline general with his attack on both the man and ball; beautiful disposal; great reading of the play and natural leadership. He'd be a very welcome addition to a young Essendon side, and would perhaps be the final piece of our back-6 puzzle. Can you imagine:
Newman - Pears - Slattery
Fletcher - Hooker - Dempsey
Having said that, he will be 28 this year, and while you know what you're getting from him, his deputy in Deledio will be 23, and his upside is still massive. With two best & fairests to his name, as well as the Chris Judd comparisons, Deledio would be a superstar in a good side. Which is what we will be.
