But I don't care, as long as Gumby shows us something other than a broken leg.

Usually I don't start the GameDay thread until 10 minutes before the game starts, but I wasn't gonna have no-one steal my thread.

Gary Ablett Jr to be more focused on his GC contract than the game at hand.

Gary Ablett Jr to only have 33 possessions

Anyone watching the game live?

Spikey

Seems like we've had a fair bit of the ball but our disposal hasn't been great.

I base that on GameDay live of course.

How are they able to show it live when 7 have the rights?

Just placed a quick few bets.
- Dons to win by less than 39.5 @ $5.50
- Zaka to get 1st goal @ $51
- Hille to get 1st goal at @ $41

What you reckon? Any value there?

Nice to get that late goal; Geelong fought back well, as expected.

Skeeta Olly
26 Mar 2010, 20:02
Done pretty well so far, but we really need to turn it on in the 3rd. Gumbleton has only one touch and Williams hasn't had much either so they really need to get into the game. Maybe go Willo or Gumby one-out in the square, isolate them to give them a chance. Or even Gumby on the wing. Those two really need to get into the game for us to have any chance.

Prismall and Stanton have been very good, as has Hooker and Pears. Slattery has been very solid also. Neagle looks very slim (compared to before), so hopefully he can have an impact of sorts in the 2nd half. Welsh needs to tighten up a little bit on Ablett, as does Dempsey on Burns.

We're getting hurt in the clearances and that's where we need to improve. Welsh has done ok, but we really need to get Watson in there. Winderlich's speed hasn't been used much, so hopefully a big last half from him and a goal or two.

Besides Neagle, who has been getting a lot of kicks up the ground, the forward line has been cold. That is where the game will be won, if we can get the clearances and the ball down there, we need to convert the goals. If Monfries, Gumbleton, Williams, Davey, Reimers, Winderlich, Neagle don't get goals, we're in trouble.

One less scoring shot, yet a 31 point loss. Little moments like Davey missing an easy goal and Neagle playing on not only cost us goals, but it also cost us momentum.

Enki
26 Mar 2010, 21:34
I don't want to reward or accept losing, but having said that there is a fair bit the players and coaching staff can take out of and learn from this game.

Also a few mistakes really cost us momentum and the pressure it would have put on them, but it was also clear that playing such a hard, physical game and taking it up to Geelong drained our stamina.

I would have like us to keep the margin under 20 points but considering we looked dead on our feet in the last quarter 31 isn't terrible. Just bad (especially considering how well we pushed them early in the game).

26 Mar 2010, 21:39
Nobody here discredit what happened tonight. I really don't care who you support.

In front at 3QT against the reigning premiers who won the title last year on this very ground and into the last quarter still some sort of 'chance' after being thrashed the last 4-5 times...

I said in another forum, we would of beaten 12-13 other sides tonight with that performance. Not accepting mediocrity but it's the truth. We'll beat Fremantle over here next week, little doubt.

26 Mar 2010, 21:47
The game should have been over before the last quarter. Seriously.

We were up by three goals with five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The score since quarter time was 7.3 to 9.11 (in favour of us) at that stage. Twenty scoring shots to ten should have equaled a bigger lead than the one we had. Still, we put up a good showing and weren't embarrassed against a bloody good team. Definitely room for improvement as well.

Being a realist, it's basically what you'd expect.

Competitive against an underdone, below par Geelong.

Stanton, Prissa, Hille, Pears, Hooker, Hocking, Monfries all excellent.

My ussual suspects in Dyson & Slattery completely showed up as not worthy of their possitions in the side. If Slattery doesn't get dropped after that, he has photo's.

Despite very low output, happy enough with Williams, Neagle, Gumby.Didn't contribute anything but was playing the game the right way. Gumby didn't look like touching it but was getting to the right spots.

Dissapointing for Watson, Ryder, Dempsey as stars of the side, didn't really get their teeth into the game in round one.

On to next week.

26 Mar 2010, 22:27
Im pretty happy with our efforts. Geelong arnt that underdone, they didnt have 2 best 22 players. Varcoe or Rooke.

We also had 2 best 22 players missing who hold greater value to the team in Mcveigh and Hurley.

Stanton was very impressive and our midfield looks like it will take a step up to the next level or 2.

Hope Hille doesnt get rubbed out for too long or at all, did anyone see the incident?

26 Mar 2010, 22:36
A few comments on random players.

Zaharakis just never gave up and kept taking on players. One of our best players tonight.
Stanton was great, probably our best.
Reimers has regained some of his 2008 spark. Even getting back into the oppositions faces a bit more (always entertains me). I'm impressed with him.
Watson tried hard, did some nice things but also did some stupid things.
I was impressed with Dempsey's effort, but not the effectiveness of his effort.
Hocking stood out for me as one of our better players. Looked good as a backman, worked hard to make spoils.
Pears and Hooker both did well in defence, with Hooker showing some freakish spoils (obviously learning off Fletch).
I'm glad Gumby is finally okay but he really needs to hold his marks and be better with the quick handballs at ground level, got tackled every time he had it. I'd persist with him for next week but if he doesn't improve I'd send him to Bendigo for him to find some form.

MelkshamWOW
26 Mar 2010, 22:37
Agree with PP, Prismall disappointing tonight I thought. Often tries to do too much with his kicks, can't drill relatively easy chances at goal, and often sets up his teammates with hospital handballs.

Reimers complete lack of defensive pressure was also disappointing, nowhere to be seen when Bartel was tearing us to shreds.

Apart from a few things though, I was pretty happy with the performance. About what I expected in terms of margin, and we suffered by not converting our opportunities (same old story) and having massive ****ups that changed the momentum of the game (rundown of Neagle in the 3rd comes to mind).

26 Mar 2010, 22:38
I am a huge critic of Stanton. His kicking is at best erratic and at worst, deplorable, but his efforts tonight were magnificent.

Outstanding tonight and can hold his head high in an otherwise disappointing end to a game, again, for Essendon.
