ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!

Finally...the win has come against the Roos.

Was a very good victory as well, altho at 3/4 time i was still unsure about if we were going to win or not. I didnt think we'd played all that well in the first 3 quarters. The Kangaroos midfielders were loose everywhere and it was annoying to see them run close to the length of the ground time and time again. However, we stuck to our guns, and with the wind in the last quarter we kicked some arse!!

It started to rain quite heavily about 30 minutes before the match, and it ended up being on and off for the rest of the game. 20 minutes on...then it would stop enbough to put your poncho away, then it would start straight away again. Was annoying, but i thought the game was played at a pretty good level considering the rain and the 4-5 goal breeze to the Southern end.

Positives:
I thought a number of players played very good games today.
Gavin Wanganeen again, was dominant, and he sjust doesnt look like stopping anytime soon. Whether down back, or up forward in the last quarter, he played bloody well.

Tredrea kicked 2 good goals, including a ripper in the last quarter, and was one of our best players.

Pickett!!! I hope Robert Walls, Trevor Grant and the dozens of moronic weak as pi$$ Demons supporters watched the game today. He was brilliant. Stick that up your arses!! And i bet we wont see an article of apology or saying how well he played this week either!!

The fact we kept the Roos scoreless in the last quarter while running away with the game. Usually we would kick a couple of goals and then stop and let the Roos back in it and make the score respectable. But im glad we finished them off totally today.

Also i thought id mention the crowd. 24,700...on a Saturday (where we usually struggle to get over 20k) in completely crappy weather i thought was a good effort. I was thinking we'd get about 17,000 today but was pleased to see so many people turn up.

Negatives:

- Dont ask me what happened in the last quarter because i dont have a clue. Some Football Park tw@t decided it was a good idea to leave the lights off for the whole match - a decision that was baffling and meant that the last 20 minutes of the last quarter were played in near darkness. Im sure the television didnt portray just how dark it actually was in that last quarter because the cameras can adjust the light levels, but it was so bad you couldnt really tell who had the ball and what was happening. Just a blur of players in the last quarter. Poor decision by the Footy Park people....the massive black clouds that covered Footy Park in the last quarter meant light was at a minimum. Shouldnt have happened.

- Bishop playing an absolutely horrid game yet again. has he totally forgotten how to punch, because in the last two weeks hes been out marked about 25 times. Not only that but his footskills were deplorable. Once in the last quarter he even kicked the ball straight to two Kangaroos players, who were on their own by about 30 metres...like he picked them out on a lead.

Was good to win against the Kangaroos and to bury them. It puts us in a good position now, with higher percentage, and with the Pies losing as well thats an added bonus. Dare i say it...im actually hoping for a Crows win tonight because it will put Brisbane back to the pack a bit and will be better for Port...as much as i hate to say it.

Beardman Count was 2 today.

Player Reviews:

Bishop - A deadset shocker and he is really struggling at the moment. Hes lost a lot of confidence and he isnt playing anywhere near the level we know he can. He was led to the ball on everytime again today, lacked any sort of punching skills, and did some really stupid skill errors as well.
Stats: 5 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackle, 0 goals

Brogan - Started off well before getting an injury of some sort and didnt play much part in the match in the last 3 quarters.
Stats: 5 disposals, 3 mark, 8 hitouts, 0 goals

P. Burgoyne - As i said last week...hes raised his game another level this year, and he would be in close to AA form at the moment. Another high disposal, minimal brainfade game and he ended up being one of our very best. Did all the hard work today that hes been bagged of not doing before - laid 11 tackles, a couple of smothers and some fine shepherds. A top game.
Stats: 26 disposals, 6 marks, 11 tackles, 0 goals

S. Burgoyne - Another consistently high effort from Shaun today. Kicked 4 goals, played a part in one or two others and generally always did somethign when he got the ball. Whats impressed me this year about Shaun Burgoyne is that he has been consistant. Usually you dont get that from a 2nd year 19 year old, but hes performed well in every game hes played. The excitement machine!
Stats: 11 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle, 4 goals

Carr - Dunno what was wrong with him today, but he didnt do a whole lot. Spent considerable time on the bench, and only got the 3 disposals when he was on the field. Not up to his usual standard.
Stats: 3 disposals, 0 marks, 0 tackles, 0 goals

Cochrane - Performed well against his old side. Got a bit of the ball, used it very well, and did some good work. His first half was better than his last half.
Stats: 13 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 0 goals

Che C-Collins - One of his best games for the Power i thought. Provided a target between CHF and the centre to kick to...and he got a lot of the ball. Didnt let himself down today, and was high in our best players in my opinion. He plays so much better when hes not concentrating on picking up free kicks.
Stats: 18 disposals, 11 marks, 1 tackles, 1 goals

C Cornes - A little bit down on his high standard hes set this year...but still i thought he did alright. Kicked a couple of goals, got a bit of the ball, and was involved ina ripper collision with Sinclair that left Jess with sore ribs and a corky laying on the ground.
Stats: 15 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackles, 2 goals

K Cornes - Despite getting a bit of the ball himself, i thoguht he played a poor game. Was thrashed by Simpson - who was clearly Kangaroos best player. But he picked up 20 disposals and did ok when he had the ball. Still....i thought he could have played tighter on Simpson than he did. He certainly started the match off well...but i thought his last half was very average.
Stats: 20 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackles, 0 goals

Guerra - Didnt look a happy camper today as he sat on the bench for 90% of the match. I thought today would have been perfect Guru conditions, but he wasnt given a chance after a top game last week. Must have dented the confidence a bit. Still...he kicked a ripper goal in the last quarter. Hopefully stays on next week.
Stats: 5 disposals, 1 marks, 1 tackles, 1 goals

Hardwick - I thought he played fairly poorly as well. Had 3 or 4 goals kicked on him in the first half, and i thought Grant had the better of him for most of the match.
Stats: 16 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackles, 0 goals

James - Started on the bench, but was close to our best player in the last half in my opinion. Did some amazing things to find space and run thru a couple of crowded packs.
Stats: 17 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 0 goals

Kingsley - Had a billion disposals in the first quarter and was loving the wet conditions. Didnt really see a lot of him after 1/4 time tho which meant he went from BOG to about 6th or 7th. A pity it doesnt pour down every week for him!
Stats: 21 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 0 goals

Lade - What a game by big Lazer!!! Was one of our very best, and he played a game that reminded me of Brendon Lade pre 2000. Took a heap of marks around the ground, won the ruck, and showed some great signs with Brogan off the ground injured.
Stats: 18 disposals, 10 marks, 24 hitouts, 0 goals

Paxman - Despite not having a lot of the ball, he lept Leigh Brown totally out of the match (only the 1 kick). Probably our best defender.
Stats: 3 disposals, 1 marks, 0 tackles, 0 goals

Pickett - Onya Choppy!!! Kicked the first goal of the match (was always gonna happen!!), kicked another 2 after that, setup at least 3 or 4, did some excellent knock ons and taps to advatange his teammates, and chased, tackled and smothered all day long. If he plays like that for the rest of the year ill be very very pleased.
Stats: 11 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 3 goals

Schofield - Thought he was a bit down a bit, but still played ok. Certainly lifted his game in the second half, and kicked a good goal from close to the boundary line in the third quarter.
Stats: 14 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackles, 1 goals

Stevens - Another great game by Nick. Was niggled quite a lot today and kept his mind on the job for the most part, and played a very good game. Wasnt our best player, but was certainly up there.
Stats: 26 disposals, 2 marks, 0 tackles, 0 goals

Tredrea - Worked well thruout the whole match and got better as the day wore on. Kicked 2 goals, including a ripper in the last quarter...but also kicked 3 behinds. Worked hard, and took a few marks.
Stats: 18 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 2 goals

Wakelin - Didnt give Digby any space today and won the battle easily.
Stats: 9 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackles, 0 goals

Wanganeen - There is a God. His name is Gavin Wanganeen. Another BOG performance by The Gav today. Was everywhere. Not much more needs to be said.
Stats: 24 disposals, 10 marks, 1 tackles, 1 goals

Wilson - Wasted the ball a bit and wasnt up to his normal standard i thought. Could have done better with his oppurtunities.
Stats: 10 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 0 goals

Macca19POTY votes:
9 - Wanganeen, P Burgoyne, CCC
8 - Kingsley, James, Lade, Pickett, Stevens
7 - S Burgoyne, Paxman, Tredrea, Wakelin
6
5 - Cochrane, C Cornes, Schofield
4
3 - K Cornes, Hardwick
2 - Wilson
1 - Guerra

With the soaring price of power I don't think the SANFL really like to put the lights on unless the game is listed as a night game.

Tredders was quite funny after the game, he didn't seem too bothered with the darkness but was a little surpised that the lights didn't come on, they used to put the lights on when he was younger.

It was darkness was terrible, it was that dark in the last quarter that the person sitting next to me went missing or at least I thought they had. Port kicked another goal and I soon realised they hadn't gone anywhere.

God help us is the game was close, the umpires can't see at the best of times, no need to make it any darker for them.

Perhaps Harding could use the darkness of the game as defence to his Tribunal hearing, good luck!

Kingers got plenty of the ball but his decision making leaves a lot to be desired.

How many times did we turn it over when he could have found a better option?

The game could have been broken open a lot earlier than the last quarter!

Looks like Lade's taken a step back to 1999 when he had all the ruck responsibility and did a great job. Having him floating across centre-half-back to pick up marks was a master stroke too. I would give Ladey BOG today for that effort, dominating Burton and Porter in the rucks on your own must rank as one of the better ruck performances.
But what about the umpires today! First one of them didn't allow us to play on from a mark, the umpire seemed to think it was necessary to have a player on the mark before you could play on. That one meant the Roos could match up and it led to a Roos goal. Then there was an incredible decision in the second quarter, Bishop won a marking contest when he bumped his opponent out with the ball about 3 metres away. Result : another Roos goal. We ended up with more frees, and one of them was a mind-boggling out of bounds deliberate when the kick made over 30 metres up the field.
Do the Roos have some kind of complex with SA teams? That's 4.13 after half-time against Adelaide and Port. That must have been one of our best last quarters. Too bad I forgot to set my video.

I was pretty amused to see Choco bring back John Cahill's ruckman plan for Ladey - good way to give him form.

As I recall, Robert Walls used to bag that too, saying that if he could come back as any footballer, it would be as the Port ruckman, because all you do is take a tap, then drop into defence for easy marks. To Wallsy: Ha ha.

The free kick against Bish which resulted in a North goal, was the worse umpiring decision I have seen this year.

Do you need over 30000 before the SANFL consider putting the lights on ?

What was that huge roar in the last quarter when nothing happed? My wife said that it could of been the Collingwood V West Coast result on the scoreboard.

Good to see Chocko pay tribute to the 25000 loyal Port fans :)

Great review Macca.

Was anyone else critical of Kane Cornes for kicking to his brother, and not the best option, far too often ?

Who does Monty replace when he returns - Kingsley or Hardwick ?

Hardwick definitely. Has been down on form the last two or three weeks. Not playing to the standard he set for us last year. Kingsley has improved each game back and gave us plenty of chance to open to a 2 or 3 goal break by quarter time. 3.4 to 3.1 by our forwards squandered his (and other back/centre players) early work. I've never been a Kingsley fan, but he's playing better then Hardwick at the moment. Faded a bit later in games, but returning from a minimal pre-season that's somewhat expected for the first 2 or 3 games till he's fully match fit again.

Will we ever get tired of praising Gav ? I don't think so. ;) He was solid without being to the exceptional standard he's set so far this year in the first three quarters, but that last quarter I'm sure Choco pulled out his Clone-a-matic and conjured up a couple more Gavins as he seemed to be playing forward, back and centre - all at the same time in the final quarter. Once again the most pleasing aspect was not just that he got plenty of the ball, but yet again it's WHEN he gets it most. He invariably this year does the most damage when the side really needs it. A narrow lead at three quarter time and the game in the balance and up he steps to the plate. When the weekly brownlow odds come out I'm sure he'll have shortened again. Right now it's got to be a two man race between Super Gav and Voss - maybe Gardiner and Goodes as outsiders, but not as consistent and dominating each game as the first two.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. He's not even the best player for the cows, but old KG and co. prefer to live in Adelaide's past rather then present.

Wouldn't surprise me if he is. Brownlow votes always seem to be at least 1 or 2 years out of date. Umpires see a player they missed out on a couple of years ago having a passable game and they seem to get into this mindset that he must have done really well now if he did then.

Is anyone still umpiring who was umpiring in 1993? What's the most number of years between Brownlows for any player?

As to the first question, I seriously doubt it. You'd be looking for an umpire who'd done nearly 250 games and I don't think there are any.
The longest time between Brownlows for any one player is 5 years. The longest time between a player's first and last Brownlows is 9 years. Both these records are held by Bob Skilton who won in 1959, 1963 and 1968.

IIRC, Greg Williams had 7-8 odd years between his two Brownlows.

Missed that. Here is the list of Brownlows 1924-2002 showing Bobby Skiltons 3 and Greg Williams 2.

Yes, Bryan Sheehan is longest serving of all current umpires, amazingly he started back in 1986. Not sure on the rest of the umpires.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but he's top in both The Age footballer of the year award and, for what it's worth, The 'tiser's player of the year comp.

Well we took a couple of so called crow supporters (my inlaws) who have never been to the football, to see a real game. They were amazed at how dark it was in that last quester and asked was it usually like this. I guess this is an example of bringing a couple of new supporters over to the dark side huh?

AS for the review, a bit hard on Bishop. He took a well judged mark as others have commented above only to have it reversed in one of the most ridiculoulsy inept decsions you're likely to see.

Defense was OK I thought, had to be.

If what Jars458 has posted is true, you could be forgiven for thinking you're not at a football match at a Crows game. Some of the less-than-enthusiastic "supporters" he talked about made me wonder what some people go to the footy for.
There probably are a sizeable core of people who go to sports events just so they can be seen or can say to people "Oh, I went to the match yesterday".

I remember one Norwood vs Port game I was in a patch of empty seats in the stand. At half time, a bunch of middle-age Norwood supporters came up and claimed their seats, said hello to all their friends, and left again at three quarter time. I don't think they were even losing at that stage; I doubt they even knew the score.
