View Full Version : Could we turn Monfries into a Mid?

Like Zaharakis is at the moment, Monfries was originally touted as a midfielder that will be groomed as a forward until he gets some good cardio. He now has great cardio and the skills to be a midfielder, has a good defensive mindset and switches it to offensive when it is needed, is a great kick for goal and can milk frees like no other. People are saying we need another A-grade mid, could Monfries be it?
Just a theory.

I lke him as a forward for the moment. Provides a bit of leadership and footy smarts up there which we really need.

Myers is the A Grade mid we have, plus the guy we drafted last year is no slouch. I would be playing them next week for starters. If Geelong can play Duncan, we sure as hell can play Myers at the least.

How many times have you seen Myers play the last 12 months ?

He doesn't watch games, we have established that seeing as he said that Stanton's disposal last night was terrible. My mother has grade 3 cataracts and goes for North Melbourne and when I rang her this morning one of the first things she said she was impressed by Stanton's improvement last night and that the number 5 is starting to suit him.

You'll find he causes more trouble up forward although the way the team is lining up there are a few that will cycle through both forward and mid. When Mcveigh, NLM and Hurley come back into the side we'll see how the structure holds up.

Hurley could take the role that Monfries plays to free him up for some midfield action but he doesn't look like he really belongs that far up the ground. He'll provide a good option if there are any injuries during the season.

No keep him up forward. He's a good mark and a good kick and he's improving every week and does have the potential to become a top player in the competition in the next couple of years.

Monfries greatest skills are his ability to time his leads and his great hands. He wouldn't get to use them as a midfielder nearly as often and our forward line would also suffer for it. I would rather us try some other options. Houli in particular, and Melksham should be trialled early to see how he adapts to senior footy, we could do with his pace and class.

I don't see your posts often but the ones I see make refreshing amounts of sense :):thumbsu: Keep on thinking like this, need more posters like you around.

Monfries pros and cons for mid:

Pros:
- gives all
- puts head over ball

Cons:
- Poor handball
- kicking only average
- Motor?
- Strength over the ball?
- Ball winning ability?

Way too many cons for me and I think he's found his spot as a hard working forward.

No. He has been tried in the middle for short bursts over the years and he simply does nothing while he is in there. We did actually recruit him to be an inside mid but he simply can't play that role at AFL level.

He is not really a contested ball winner at AFL level, has average skills, isn't really a fast thinker and still makes poor decisions under pressure sometimes (which is why the forward line is better as he generally has more time) and I still think he runs too far up the ground sometimes and lessens the impact he could have (e.g. I don't think he is that damaging through the midfield even when he runs through there).

He still needs to find more consistency than last year but he is much better up forward simply because he works hard and over the last few years his leading has gotten better.

Why on earth would we do that.

He's becoming a really good small forward, that kind of player is worth their weight in gold.

Look at what guys like Stevie J and Chapman have done to us over the years.

I don't think Gus has the tank to be honest.

I think we need him up forward for now. However i think his footy smarts are starting to show through and he could be a good midfielder. We already have a solid midfield this year and if we need anything in there it's pace. I think giving Alwyn Davey and Dempsey increased time is the way to go for this season.

Last thing we need is another midfielder, Lonergan and Houli cant even get a game atm.

No way...we alreadu have engough slow mids that dont have the capacity to run out a game...
his is more value to us in the FWD line, where he is turning into a decent player.

Close thread, was just a silly theory.
Embarressing.

I think we could trial him in defence though BpB.

Defensive player who is quick enough, has as you and others have stated, good hands, strong body, solid skills and is a better than average decision maker.

I think of Graham Johncock or Heath Shaw when I think of Monfries in defence. I do not see him as a permanent forward though, went to a game last year when Neagle had been playing for a few weeks and Monfries continually led into the same spots and got in his way, not something we need from 'Gus' now we have Gumbelton and Hurley coming through also.
