Not a bad name for the new GC team.
I was reading the April 2010 bomber magazine and of particular interest was an interview with Ryder, Pears, Hurley, Hooker and Neagle.
They were all asked if they would be tempted by big paychecks from GC or GWS.
Source Bombers Magazine April 2010.
Ryder
Its an easy decision to make the way I look at it. We stick together as a group. Its all about essendon for us.
Pears
I havent thought about it at all. We are a young, close group, who all want to come through together. I want to stick around for the ride here at Essendon
Hurley
The future at our club is really bright. We are a really young group and I think the only way is up.
Some reassuring answers there. Although Hurley didnt exactly say he was staying.
No answer from Hooker and Neagle. Anyone know Hookers contract status?
The only way is up, eh?
North is up, Ahh!

Hurley didn't say Essendon. "Our club" & "we" could mean GC. Actions speak so much louder than words. Sign the contracts now. This crap will hang over our heads all bloody year. If anyone refuses to sign then (like we should have with McPhee) we need to assume they want out & drop them form the side & give commited kids a go. Nothing would be worse for the club than investing another years development into GC's next KP.

Gold Coast Vultures also works.
Are you suggesting they change their name as well because of the amount of money they have to splash around from 'Coast' to 'Cost'?

Is it true that GC can choose one player from every team??? What if none of our guys want to go??
Hurley needs to be signed up now!
Hurley won't sign till the end of the year,,,,he will get an offer from gc, bombers will match it and he'll stay.... that what I'm expecting anyway....
As for hooker I think he's contracted for2011 but that is a guess that he started with a 2year deal, and signed another two year deal last year .....

Noticed this aswell, not the best response. Find it interesting that young blokes cotchin, ziebell have re signed and even came out before hand saying they weren't interested in GC yet this bloke is hanging out for whatever reason.
Have a look who his manager is, piece of scum Connors.

Why on earth would they sign now? If they want to stay, they'll wait til
the end of the year, then get a fatter
contract.

Hurley, taken at pick No. 5 in the 2008 national draft, has been strongly linked to the Gold Coast in recent weeks but has assured the Bombers he wants to remain at Windy Hill.http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/twogame-ban-looms-for-hurley-20100218-ois4.html

Hurley didn't say Essendon. "Our club" & "we" could mean GC.
Heh, that is some spectacularly tenuous reasoning, but it was good for a laugh. I was going to take Hurley's quote and twist it into being Pro Gold Coast as a light-hearted joke, but I think you unintentionally did that for me.

It was intentional just didn't use the sarcastica font. The rest of the post was serious though. There's no reason why we shouldn't be aiming to sign him up as soon as possible. Keep the wolves from the door.

We probably have talked to him about signing, but if his manager has told him to wait until the end of the year as his value will be expected to rise then there is nothing we can do. And as mentioned above his manger is Connors who is pretty slimy.
The combination of a possible GC offer and just Hurley playing and displaying his natural talent means waiting until the end of the year is good advice from a financial perspective, so I don't understand what Essendon fans think the club should do. Force him to sign? Force him to change managers?
You said this:
If anyone refuses to sign then (like we should have with McPhee) we need to assume they want out & drop them form the side & give committed kids a go.
But that is a totally irrational stance as plenty of footballers (or their managers) play contract games to get more money and better contract lengths, it is also business after all. If clubs followed your rule inflexibly all the time they'd lose more than one talented player.
McPhee is a totally different case as he has limited talent, is probably in his last contract, and we didn't want to offer him more years than we thought he would be of value to us (like we did with JJ). I think we also had an informal deal with McPhee and he then reneged after trade week and few players are that shifty so that scenario isn't going to arise to often. Hurley on the other had is young, has all the potential in the world and we will do everything we can to meet his contract demands (within reason obviously). Dropping Hurley would most likely make him want to leave if all he was doing was waiting to get the best contract he could. You seem to want to make the logical leap that because he hasn't signed he's not committed or doesn't want to play for us in the future, but that's simply a non sequitur and doesn't hold.
Who knows, maybe they will announce his re-signing after his court date mid year. But even if that doesn't happen, that doesn't mean we should just assume that he has made a secret commitment to the GC.

Maybe the whole taxi incident is having an influence on when we sign him.
Im not worried at all, the club will be able to keep him.

It is possible that an agreement has already been reached, but the club doesn't want to be seen to be rewarding him with a big fat pay rise just yet.
I would be surprised if anything was announced before the end of court proceedings.

Just on this...If Geelong sign Selwood and somehow manage to sign Ablett...I reckon Hurley will be either the #2 on the GC's list...
If that is the case it would be hard for essendon match their offer...
This is the only worry i have regarding the Hurler
Strange comments in this thread.
I imagine that the GC would target 2 players from each club - Hurley has been mentioned and the other player is bleeding obvious - Stanton.
Personally, I completely expect Hurley to go. The amount he was talked up at the end of last year, there's no way they aren't going to offer him a *huge* contract.
Having only been here for a single year, it wouldn't be fair to make it a question of loyalty (Well, unless he supported the club growing up!).
And if it comes down to dollars, CG are going to offer a bigger number than us.
If he does go though, he better be rated a Type-A player. :(

they cant offer hurley what the will offer ablett, he will be 21 in june 2011, yes they do have extra salary cap, but they cant just offer him millions because they are getting soo many high draft picks plus all the 17yos they already have, and whoever else, i cant keep up with all their players,
anyway what im trying to say is all of them are going to need to get pay increases at the same time, so you cant offer a 20year old millions and expect to keep all the high draft pick players they will have...
also lets not forget they can target contracted players they just have to trade for them and since they have picks 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 they can target any contracted player they want aswell so if they get 1 or 2 marquee contracted players over that also adds to their salary cap...

Any contract offered would be forward weighted though, surely!. So that in the early years, when they have a lot of rookies, they will have a greater share of their cap going to those marquee players.

Can someone explain the rules regarding Gold Coast and uncontracted players?
It mentions that they are able to take 16 uncontracted players, one from each club. Does this mean that they can take anyone out of contract this year even if they do not want to play for GC? e.g. Watson comes out of contract, can GC take him against his will?

No because watson and most players for that matter will sign up before gold coast have the opportunity.
Uncontracted players are usually typically players that are delisted or players like mcphee who have a disagreement and run their chances with the PSD. Uncontracted players are generally pretty shit players. But in this case Gold Coast can reassure a good uncontracted player of a spot on their list in 2011 and they remain unsigned for the whole year. All players playing for GC next year will be there cause they want to be there. ie Harbrow and C Brown
The Gold Coast will be round 1 of poaching, GWS is round 2. How many players would be tempted to relocate to Sydney?

Exactly! And lets be honest. The Essendon heirachy should have already implemented a long term contract management strategy for Hurley given that he is most likely going to be our next big marquee player. If they haven't they don't deserve to keep him.

Well said SJ05.
The balance of probability suggests we are going to lose one or more players in the next 2-3 years - and you know its not going to be Laycock and Jetta. Surely Hurley, Pears, and Ryder are prime targets.
I do believe in Ian Robson we have one of the smartest operators going round, we also have room in the cap so that will help. But I'm worried.
