View Full Version : Which would be the best Roys mark?

Thought I might take nominations of the best mark taken by a Fitzroy player.
Some that come to mind for me included :
Lynch's '89 screamer against North.
Johnson's 1996 old-guernseys-day mark at Princes Park.
Tom Kavanagh grab in the reserves (I only saw a photo of this).
Jason Baldwin's backwards spinning mark against WCE.
What other beauties were there?

Roos, over John Kennedy in the 1983 Qualifying Final.

Johnson took an absolute pearler in the first round of 1996 against Hawthorn. I have a pick of it somewhere, which I probably should scan at some stage.
It was a dead-set certainty for mark of the week, perhaps even mark of the year, until D.Bourke pulled out some freakish piece of crap to steal the award for the week - he may have even taken the award for the year from that one too. We were jibbed!
It's good to see that Johno is still pulling them down every now and then, too! He's really doing the Roys proud, with his performances with the Lions. I'd rank him in the top 5 or 6 at the club - in most other teams he'd probably have the role of a A.McLeod, and be more high profile than what he currently is.
Doc Wheildon, P.Roos, G.Pert and R.Osborne were all capable of the spectacular or freakish.
Osborne was particularly good at the one-handers and the like. Roos and Pert were both great at flying for the contested marks in packs, and I've seen some great pics of these two with huge leaps in bringing down screamers.
I even saw B.McCormack take some great one-handers, and I recall a huge leap from R.Lyon featuring on a few highlights tapes from around '85 or '86.
One day at Waverly in '94, I saw Doc Wheildon get the biggest climb on a pack that I have ever seen. He got his hands to the ball, but couldn't bring it down. If he'd completed the mark, it probably would have come off as one of the most spectacular of all time! With that said though, I never really saw any footage or photos of the incident - so maybe it would have all been in vain anyway.
Doc was always trying that sort of nonsense.
With the Baldwin mark, I reckon Baldwin had excellent marking hands for someone of his size. His career tends to go fairly un-noticed, due to the circumstances which surrounded it. Likewise, I reckon he was cut down by injury and conflicts with various coaches. Apart from that, I always considered him to be a well skilled player in almost every aspect of the game. As a midfield combination, specifically in '93, the likes of Broderick, Armstrong, Lyon, Gale and Baldwin made a good front-line.
I'm pretty sure Baldwin made the state squad in '94 as well, although, didn't make the cut to the final side.

Ross Lyons mark against the bombers in 94
Wheildons one hander against the roos in 92
Ross Lyons mark over James Manson at Vic Park in 91 i think
Bob Beecroft took a cracker against North Melbourne at Arden Street in 1979.
One other bloke who was a good mark (but a little before my time) was Laurie Richards.

Reckon this was a pearler too - What a shame Johnno fluffed more than he made.
Kevin Taylor took the best ever mark in the Maggos at Vic Park not to sure what year Taylor played though.
He stood on top of this guys head, next best was Tommy's mark, but each to his own we had plenty of good high flyers most would have been awarded frequent flyer points, Greg Parke wasn't bad Laurie Richards, Perty, we could go on.
With the benefit of more hindsight than most, I'd say a mark Kevin Murray took at the Brunswick St venue in about 1958. I think it was against Melbourne. He climbed on an opponent's shoulders, then lay back and took the ball on the way down, falling backwards. It was a lot like a pearler Perty took at the MCG, except Murray was higher.
Best high mark I've ever seen at the 'Roys was Tony Ongarello. He would take Mark Of the Year every second week. Trouble was, he then had to kick the ball.
I thought Lynch's mark against Richmond at the G was pretty good, as was Hinchen's one, which was right in front of me at the Junction. Michael Reeves took a mark one day when he floated horizontally across a pack of players, a la Jonathon Brown. I think he just got pipped for MOT.

Bernie took a crunch speccie v Hawks in 83 Qualifying and Gary P. v Pies Elimination 84.
Ross Lyon's v Bombers 94 at PP was the classic ride and stretch and Paul R. used to try for mark-of-the-day when a lad just about every week.
Mick Conlan would NOT qualify as I don't recall him ever taking a contested mark over his head.

I still think Roosy's was the best.

No doubt. Still the best running goal exponent I've seen. He just didn't have a clue in the overhead mark department. Gives us all hope.

Lynch's screamer against North in 1989. I think that one won Mark of the Year.
Johnson's speccie over Shannon Gibson of Hawthorn was another fantastic mark but I've only seen a photo of that one.

Lynch Vs North at the MCG - '89 Mark of the year.
Baldwin running back Vs WCE about 1993
Ossie taking a few good grabs, there was a particular one Vs Richmond
Doc Wheildons' one hander Vs North- Friday Night game in 1992
Just for Good Measure ( Even though it wasnt a mark) Garry Wilsons' bump on The "Ghost" Jimmy Jess in 82 at the G, couldnt get a better well executed fair bump. Jess was out cold.
