GREATER Western Sydney has suffered a 94-point hammering in its inaugural TAC Cup clash against Northern Knights at Blacktown Olympic Park on Saturday.

With the final score 25.15 (165) to 11.5 (71),

high performance coach Alan McConnell - who will guide the side until Kevin Sheedy takes over for its AFL season in 2012 - said GWS could struggle for most of this season.

"The challenge for me is to remain positive and optimistic and make sure the players see that too, because as we know young boys judge themselves on whether they win or lose and we might not win too many ," he said.

"The difference between our good and bad is too great. That's consistent with how we train."

Still, McConnell said each of his players "had their moments" in the match.
"There were no surprises individually, but I thought Alex Carey played like the overage boy that he is, with poise and control and he gives good direction," he said.

"I'm very grateful we've got him in our environment - it's good for him and equally for us. He adds a level of experience in the group."
Carey, who has come through the AIS-AFL Academy squad and knocked back an offer to join the South Australian Cricket Association, racked up a game-high 34 disposals and kicked two goals.

He will be eager to make an impression after being overlooked in last year's draft period.
Kaine Stevens, from the Australian Capital Territory, was GWS's next best ball-winner with 24 possessions.

McConnell also named wingman Jack Dimery, Northern Territorians Jed Anderson and Damian Williams and ACT's Nick Collins among the better players on Saturday.
"Jack sees the game very well and uses the ball by hand and foot pretty well," he said.

"Jed Anderson is a baby at 15 - he is eligible for under-16s - but he is a competitor beyond his size, shape and age at the minute.
"I thought Nick Collins showed a couple of nice things, off a half-forward flank.

"And when Damian Williams gets the ball, good things happen."
McConnell also revealed ruckman Tom Hill, who missed the game, could be sidelined for the entire season.

The 18-year-old has battled injuries throughout his junior career, with a knee problem now robbing GWS of a player with TAC Cup experience.
"He's unlikely for the year, although that remains to be seen," McConnell said.
McConnell added that regardless of how many players ended up on GWS's inaugural AFL list, the group would leave a legacy for football in New South Wales and the ACT.

"One would expect in three, four or five years' time that there will be leaders in the Sydney Football League [from this group], so there will be good outcomes at all levels."
Despite the loss, newly-appointed chief executive Dale Holmes said the day was a historic occasion.

"Our under-18 team has played its first TAC Cup game and the AIS kids have played against the Swans reserves, and for us both games were important," he said.

"We have the opportunity for up to 20 of the 30 [AIS] kids to either priority-pick them or they could be a zone pick to us.

"So ultimately, the nucleus of our youth-aged kids coming into the club will come out of these two games, so it's important for us and our recruiters to have a look at these kids and launch the GWS brand out there in the TAC Cup program."

To be honest here, I really do believe GWS will struggle in the TAC this year, aswel as the VFL next year and there transition to the AFL will also be a huge struggle. I can see them coming in like the Brisbane Bears and Fremantle did in 1987 and 1995, when both teams struggled to play competitive football.

If that is the case, and it appears it may be as the coach conceded as much in the quote in that article, why is it that the Gold Coast seems to be faring much better? I don't understand, I mean GC went alright last year in the TAC Cup, what has been done differently there that has not happened at GWS?

The score was made much worse by 10 minutes in the last quarter. There were some good passagesof play but as the coach said the bad patches cost a lot

Think there were 5 mins in every q & yeh 10 in last where knights just went up a cog or 2 or controlled the footy, as the blues showed thursday night turn overs & missed shots will kill you every time & to often gws turned it over in dangerous areas & paid the price.

Coach spot on, I'm sure that there are very average players at the knights but the consistancy of all the others & as a collective unit lets them slip under the radar

Saturday should of been a massive reality check for at least half of the gws squad you could pick the blokes who had played senior footy last year consistantly, carey, stevens, webster, dimery, stubbs, 2 NT boys looked like they had played a bit of higher level football, even brown looked like the senior experiance had helped him (cole & brain played a bit of senior & rep footy last year & would of been handy, hill as a big experianced ruckmen would of been a great help throughout the year).

As stated else where murphy & hartley also had a crack, murphy not a huge unit but looks to have a footy brain & a big ticker, hartley is a big lump of a lad & is worth keeping an eye on

The Qld afl was way more organised and started alot earlier in their development than the nsw afl. Three years ago the qld under 16 team played the nsw team in act and were a 10 goal better team so they had a good structure for the gold coast team and they recruited well and appointed a proper coach from day one not a figure head like sheedy who won't coach at tac cup level like the qld coach has. The coach of the gws team has to wait till he gets some bigger bodied players to return from injury before they can have a good crack at even getting close to winning. i wish them luck

GWS got some publicity here tonight via the Adelaide Now Local Footy website (part of The Advertiser online page) through Alex Carey's 1st game over there.

This game was a wake up call for all the GWS players as the standard in the TAC is 2 to 3 levels up on what they have been used to playing. You also have to take into account that this was the Northern Knights third competition game and GWS had only played two practice games which are not at the same intencity. The GWS players have been thrown together from about five different leagues which are all of a different standard. You need to give these players at least five games together adjusting to the pace of the game and then the improvement will start happening. As Alan has continually said there is expectactions on how many games they are expected to win, just that the group as a whole continue to improve.

It will be interesting to see how selections go for the game against Queensland. One would expect the great majority of the run on side to be there but a few on the bench might be under a bit of pressure for their spot.

Clearly wholesale changes are not going to happen but I believe that by round 4 or 5 Allan will have tried about 28 players just searching for the best combinations around the ground. The comments about those who have played senior footy are spot on. Now we just need the others to step up to improve competitiveness everywhere. The game also showed that we do not need a gigantic team on the field but one that has the right balance of speed, hardness and above all a never say die attitude.

I really enjoy McConnell's honesty; these boys have been given an opportunity to develop skills and improve their knowledge of the game. That’s exactly what TAC footy should be about. Queensland had twelve months working on their bodies and hard skills training prior to entering the TAC comp. I wish him and the boys well, it's not about the games they win it's about getting the best out of each individual and McConnell has plenty of experience in that area.
