View Full Version : Will Hurley come straight back in?

Simple question. Do you think Knights and co will bring him straight back into the side, or will he be forced to play a game or two in the VFL for some match fitness? We really need him up forward, but you don't want an underdone player brought into the side.
Assuming he comes straight in, where does he play? I think Gumby is worth persisting with at CHF. He was terrible in Rd1 but he showed some good signs against Freo. Hopefully by the end of the season his opponents are blowing up from fatigue. Perhaps Hurley playing a Carey\Brown like role at CHF with Gumby in a true CHF position, roaming up towards the wing at times.

Definatly straight in to Full Forward.
Glass will take him.
Hurley - 4 goals
Knights wouldn't even consider playing him in the VFL.
He WILL play round 4.

He won't come straight back in I wouldn't think.
Generally the only players who come straight back in after so long out are out and out superstars with 50+ games under their belt.
There's no use bringing in a kid with very little AFL experience into the side underdone. He will get a run in the 2s and will be better off for it I would think.
Whether Knights plays him back or forward will be the major question.

It's not like he hasn't been training, he'll come straight back in that's guaranteed.

Big difference between training and match fitness. I would think a guy who has played 10 games of AFL football in his career, after missing the first few rounds of the season would come back through the 2s.
I might be wrong but I think it would be irresponsible of Knights to play a guy who is a kid, and is lacking match fitness, in the seniors before he gets a run in the 2s.

there's no doubt he'll play forward. Knights announced a few weeks ago that Hurley will play predominantly as a forward. And, given the relative strengths of Hooker & Pears, up against what has to be seen as a struggling forward line, it's a no-brainer.
I just cannot wait to see Hurley & Gumbleton in tandem up forward together. Something for Bomber fans to get excited about

forward.kinghts said that he will play foward this year :)
Depends on the performance of Neagle and Gumbleton. Hopefully we aren't desperate enough to rush him in, something tells me he will be brought in though.

Well Neagle isn't even listed for this week so that leaves a spot open for him.

who do we bring in?

Neagle has to be at the crossroads, considering he can't get a game in a team whose number 1 marking target is a guy whose body has failed him for three years. Has all the tools but just can't play to his potential. Hopefully Hurley comes back in as we need him up there. It would always give Williams a hand as he wouldn't have to play on guns like Scarlett and Tarrant.

Straight in to the forward line. The kid's a big part of our future, so let's give him as many games as he needs.

What's all this about 'no match fitness'?
http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7313The Bendigo Bombers trounced the Casey Scorpions by 64-points in a practice match at Casey Fields yesterday. [29 March]
Michael Hurley was also dangerous kicking three goals in attack.
Bendigo Goalkickers:
Hurley 3, McVeigh 2, Lovett-Murray 2, Daniher 2, Lonergan 2, Bock 2, Melksham 1, Skipworth 1, Laycock 1, Colyer 1, Silverlock 1, Crameri 1, Marigliani 1.http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7313
The guy is aching to come back into the side, we'd be ****ing lunatics not to let him get what he deserves.
Obviously he will according to this

Isn't conclusive but seems certain he will come straight back in. He's a real talent but it has a bit concerning our attack is relying on a second year player for its structure.

He's in the 2s. (as others have said)
He'll be our best tall forward - not that that's saying a great deal.
I think that he will come back straight away.
I do hope that supporters remember that he is only a second year player that has only played 10 games. Sure he showed a lot in those 10 games, but I just don't want the site to go nuts because he didn't instantly kick 10 goals. So lets not put to much pressure on the guy.

Shinners Hurley Skipworth
Hurley is suspended from representing the firsts... not suspended from all football. I imagine he'll play CHF for the 2s most of the game.
of course he is straight back in! Its not like he's been injured and unable to train, lacking fitness, etc. He's been playing reserves practice matches and the way our forward line has been going he is an absolute certainty. Pity he's not playing tomorrow night, i'd be supremely confident with him at CHF.

Looking forward to seeing Gumbleton and Hurley working together. The forward line is obviously a work in progress, but these two could form a deadly duo in years to come.

I really like the look of this kid.
Wish we had him down at the Blues.
Surely with your forward line not looking too good, he would slot into CHF in round four?
Mad Bomber Sean
9 Apr 2010, 12:14
Pending no injuries Hurley is a walk up start for round 4 irrespective of the result in the Blues game. Basically he can play FF or CHF.
Before Round 2 I would've said it was as simple as:
CHF: Gumby
FF: Neagle
With Hurley to replace the weakest link.
Now with Neagle in the reserves, it begs a few questions:
Does Hurley automatically overtake Neagle? - Most likely
Will both come in, with Williams to go out?
Will both come in, with Gumby to go out?
Will Hurley come in to replace Gumby, Williams, or neither?
Either way, - save for injury - Hurley will play in Round 4.

Knights will persist with Willo no matter how bad he is going, he traded for him and gave him a 3 year contract, Sheeds would do exactly the same.
I don't see a problem having Willo and Hurbleton in the same forward line, sorry Jay, you're a back-up.

Loving the forward structure, I'd however probably go this way
Hurley Gumbleton Reimers
Monfries Williams Davey
Would much prefer to see Hurley play a Jim Hird type role across half forward and having Gumby & Williams the main leading forwards with Davey and Reimers providing the patches of brilliance we know they are capable of. I understand Willo has struggled thus far, however playing him one out in the square and having the support of the 2 big boys in Gumby and Hurley (who will take the 2 best defenders) will surely release Willo to play his natural game and bag his 2-3 goals a game. Willo IMO is not a flanker he plays his best from the square as lead up mid sized full forward. I'm trying to stay positive and I know things will turn around especially when Hurley comes back (hope I haven't put to much pressure on the lad.):o

I highly doubt we will see any two players from the same side kick 180 goals between them in a premiership year again for a very long time ( and the Hawks boys did it at ages 20 and 21 )
But Hurls and Gumby will be very good nonetheless I think :)

If you want to win you should play him and play him up forward along side Gumbleton. You have Pears who i presume would get McKinley id suspect you would win that and then some and Hooker to take on Kennedy.
You a damn good chance. We are shocking and if you beat us we will be 0-5 after the Derby.

Straight in.
Marking presence in Hurley and Gumby.
Williams and Monfries lead up. I starting to think that maybe only one of these guys can play in the side.
Zaharakis, Colyer, Davey, Reimers, Lonergan + resting ruckman at times.
Hard to squeeze all in. Good signs in that you must perform or you will go out as was shown this week.

Wilo plays closer to goal in the pocket where as Gus is more ya HFF type.
Throw in Hurley & Gumby plus a resting Ryder & ya Zaharakis, Colyer, Davey, Reimers, Lonergan. This is a powerful fwd line with lots of marking power & mediums & crumbing fwd whippets.
As long as the balls are comming in fast, clean & often I see no problem with this set up.
I reckon with Hurley & Gumby in the side, our resting ruckman wont need to spend so much time in the fwd50.
I heard Hurley kicked 4 goals for Bendigo and was BOG.
Can't wait for him to do it for the bombers

http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7346The Bendigo Bombers have gone down to the Bullants by 45 points in their first match of the VFL season despite a strong showing from suspended Essendon star Michael Hurley.
The 192cm key forward kicked four of the team's nine goals. Atkinson booted two while Bock, Scanlon and Davey had singles.http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7346

Bring Hurley straight in and whisper sweet nothing into Neagles ear about playing well in the seconds and earning a spot.
At the end of the day if we can rotate Gumby, Hurley and Neagle that has to be a good thing. If we have any injuries (which we will) then we can bring in our third tall. It's fantastic that with us having 3 kid talls we have the space in our cap to afford all 3 of them as they're not financially demanding... yet.
Keep one in our pocket as a backup for injuries AND to keep the other two blokes hungry.
When you also add Angus, Williams, Davey, Reimers and a host of other small forwards we might get a bit of hunger out of them!

I am assuming that you will play McKinley, Brown and Kennedy as your talls.
Fairly certain that Pears will take Kennedy, Hooker takes Brown and Fletcher takes McKinley.
Hurley will be straight back into the side, no questions asked.
