IMHO we're developing one of the best marking sides going around.
Gumby - pluck ANYTHING from ANYWHERE when he's up and going
Hurley - absolutely mint in a contest
Paddy Ryder - check the highlight tapes. Party trick marks.
Tayte Pears - stands under anything and invariably gets the right result
Hooker - makes the odd silly decision, but chops off a lot of footy
Fletch - great decision maker, freak reach, what can't he do
and even our smalls -
Willo - clever, has had many years of giving away size and still taking marks
Reimers - sticky hands
Monfries - again good little contested player
NLM - superb mark
While we may lack a little in class, a little in midfield grunt, a little in endurance, I reckon we've got one of the best teams of aerialists in the league. And this could really be our X-factor, if we can keep the pressure on teams like we did last night, we will be able to mark more contested footy than most.

Best thing about last night - actually taking marks forward of centre!

I did notice that last night. It used to worry me when kicking to a contest that we wouldn't mark it and once the ball fell to the ground, the other team would rebound quickly as all our players have run off their opponent.
Last night though was great to see some contested marks taken, especially by Ryder and Hille, aswell as that mark by Gumby. Sadly, we need to take these sorts of marks because if we don't we get hurt badly on the rebound.

The only concern I have is the lack of crummers at the feet of marking packs. We were caught out a few times like this last night. I think this is where Davey can (should) have a role for us.

One thing which also brought warmth to the cockles of my heart: one time on the far wing from me - the AFL members' side - there was a contest, 2 on 2, Hille and Colyer on their men, and Colyer just stayed down instinctively and set himself for the crumbs. (Didn't end up coming off)
How bloody long has it taken us to find someone to do that? Big men go up... smalls stay down. Simple things.

Gumby and Ryder should be unstoppable in the air
if you think about it.. they are both close to 2 meters tall... both mark with their arms straight as anything and both can jump extremely high.... the point at which they can mark a ball would be 4 meters high atleast..
name one defender who could possibly stop that??!?!?!
Gumby has been fairly poor at marking, I'd say. I've seen him drop it way too many times. With that said he has taken some nice marks as well.

Gumby makes contested marks look uncontested.
Same with Hurley.
This could make up for our lack of elite kicking midfielders.
Play it country style, bomb it long and hope for the best :P

if we can stick as many F50 marks as possible we are a long way towards being a good team
wait until you see Jake Carlisle, he looks as promising as some of the other young talls we have got. Michael Still is apparently looking the goods too.
You would have to add Zaharakis to that list. Didn't show it much this week, but in previous weeks and last year he showed the ability to hold on to marks he has no right holding on to. There have been times when a defender has got a nice solid fist to the ball but because he has clunked it so tightly a second earlier the ball goes nowhere.

Jason Winderlich is a fantastic mark.

Yeah I really noticed this last night, really promising signs.

He was the leading mark taker in the TAC cup in 08 IIRC.

I think the dropped marks would just be nerves. I'm sure when he's up and running he will mark everything.

He's improving with every game.
Good call on Zaka, ENki, 4 contested marks in round 1.
Developing a dangerous, mobile, multi-prongedforward line.

That's been a consistent criticism I've had of the Bombers since Bewick retired.
Fletch - great decision maker, freak reach, what can't he do

Reimers - sticky hands

I do agree that our marking skills were great against the Blues. My points on these players
Fletch - Great player at reading the ball and putting on the spoils. I don't think his marking is the best 1-1 though
Williams - ??? He is below average with his marking skills. his attributes are his ability to time leads well, his pace and goal kicking
Reimers - I love his natural leap. Josh Hill and Roughead to it the best, the run and leap high mark. Reimers will be a star.
NLM - I don't rate his marking that highly.
Stanton - great body to body marking ability
Longergan - as above
Winderlich - Ability to read the ball off the boot and get to position quickly makes him an excellent marker.

Agreed PP, this has been a big weakness of ours for a long time. We lack a classy crummer who can not only read and get the ball but finish around goal. I'll have to disagree that Davey can play this role, but that's just IMO.

Winderlich gets in good position to crumb when he plays forward. Not that he's been cited this year. Otherwise, yeh not much else.

Dustin Fletcher. Oh wait, they won't play on each other, so no-one

Gees, are you kidding me. I've just about choked on my coffee. My grandmother is a better overhead mark than what Lovett-Murray is. He's always found wanting in a contested marking contest. Should be used as a small and not a tall. He would be a much better footballer if used in this way.

He's OK leading at it, he just can't spoil.
He used to take some pretty good speccies up forward.
He took one only last year in the Dreamtime clash.

He took at least two big grabs in that game if I remember correctly.
